Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Introducing a Boyfriend to Serena

Yannick Young told Serena Yardley everything she needed to know, then led her to the door of the CEO’s office. He instructed a secretary to fetch a chair and place it next to the CEO’s desk.

Ethan Yardley wasn’t in the office. Yannick Young led Serena Yardley inside and pointed to the chair beside the one Ethan usually occupied—the executive’s chair.

"You’ll sit here from now on. Just focus on doing your job."

Serena Yardley was reluctant, but she agreed nonetheless.

Before leaving, Yannick Young gave her a small smile. "Do a good job. If you run into any trouble, you can call me anytime."

"Okay."

Yannick Young walked out of the office, and the secretaries, who had just started their day, swarmed him.

"Mr. Young, what’s going on? Who is that woman to the CEO?"

They had seen that woman before; the CEO had even held her in his arms.

Everyone wondered if she was really the CEO’s girlfriend.

Yannick Young looked at the secretaries gathered around him and warned them, 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

"Don’t ask questions you shouldn’t. Don’t go snooping, and definitely don’t gossip. You all know the CEO’s temper, so don’t do anything to lose your jobs."

Hearing this, the secretaries all scurried back to their desks, not daring to say another word.

Serena Yardley stood in the CEO’s office, staring blankly at the place where Ethan Yardley sat.

She remembered a time, not so long ago, when she had sat on his lap with her arms wrapped around his neck. He had held her while he focused on his work.

But now, she had become his slave, completely at his beck and call.

’Oh, Serena, Serena... You were dealt such a good hand. How did you manage to play it so badly?’

Not knowing what she was supposed to do, Serena Yardley went to her seat and began to idly flip through the documents on the desk.

But she waited all morning, and Ethan Yardley never returned.

She hadn’t eaten breakfast and was starting to get hungry, so she went to the break room to look for a snack.

In the large secretarial pool outside the office, several secretaries were at work, all of them acting as if Serena Yardley didn’t exist.

They didn’t speak to her or even look at her, simply going about their business.

Feeling completely out of place, Serena Yardley returned to the office.

But she waited there all day, and still, Ethan Yardley didn’t return.

In the afternoon, when she saw everyone clocking out and leaving the company in ones and twos, Serena Yardley gave up waiting and took the subway home.

She had just reached her front door when she got a call from Ethan Yardley.

On the other end of the line, his voice was lazy and magnetic. "Go to the wine cellar and bring me a bottle of whiskey."

He hung up as soon as he said it.

Just as Serena Yardley was wondering where on earth she was supposed to deliver the bottle, he sent her a location pin.

She tapped it open and saw that it was just over a hundred meters away from her current location.

’So I’m supposed to take it to the neighbor’s house?’

Serena Yardley had lived here for half a year, but she had no idea who her next-door neighbors were. She’d never even seen them.

Thinking that at least this was better than being cooped up at home, Serena Yardley obediently went to the wine cellar to fetch the bottle.

Then, she cradled the bottle and walked to the address Ethan Yardley had sent her.

Standing at the villa’s gate, Serena Yardley raised her hand and rang the doorbell.

After a moment, someone came to open the gate.

But the person who opened it was a complete surprise to Serena Yardley.

"Nina..."

She murmured.

She was overjoyed. This was the woman who, during her childhood, had often sent beautiful clothes to her orphanage.

This was the beautiful ’big sister’ who used to take her out, buy her toys, and treat her to delicious food. To think she lived right next door.

They hadn’t seen each other in five or six years, had they?

Seeing her again, Serena Yardley felt so moved that her nose began to sting.

Nina Thorne smiled with gentle grace. She stepped forward to pull open the villa’s iron gate, taking the bottle of whiskey from Serena Yardley’s arms while patting her on the head.

"Wow! Look how much you’ve grown, Serena. This is wonderful. We’re neighbors now, so we can hang out all the time."

She put an arm around Serena Yardley and led her inside.

Serena Yardley was thrilled. Gazing at the mature, stunning woman beside her, she couldn’t help but choke up.

"Is it really you, Nina? Where have you been all these years? I couldn’t get in touch with you at all."

Especially after she graduated from high school; she had wanted to properly thank Nina for her past kindness, but her calls would never go through.

She had asked Ethan, but he said he didn’t know either.

She knew that Nina and Ethan were friends.

If even Ethan didn’t know where Nina was, how could she have ever hoped to find her?

"I had a few small mishaps over the years and was abroad, but I’m not leaving again. Come on, let’s go to the backyard for a barbecue."

Nina Thorne took Serena Yardley’s hand and led her through the villa toward the backyard.

Standing at the entrance to the backyard, Serena Yardley suddenly pulled her hand away from Nina Thorne’s.

The reason was that she saw Sylvia Schuyler was there, too.

She was sitting right next to Ethan.

The two of them were talking about something, sitting very close to each other.

She told herself not to care, but her heart ached, and a bitter feeling washed over her.

"What’s wrong?"

Seeing that Serena Yardley hadn’t followed, Nina Thorne looked back at her.

Serena Yardley quickly masked her feelings and offered a faint smile. "It’s nothing."

She caught up with Nina Thorne, deliberately changing the subject. "Nina, are you really going to live here from now on?"

"That’s right."

"When did you move in? How come I’ve never run into you here before?"

"I just moved in today. I knew you lived here, so I moved in specifically to be your neighbor."

Glancing over at Ethan Yardley and Sylvia Schuyler chatting in the distance, Nina Thorne averted her gaze and looked at the person beside her, asking,

"So what’s your relationship with Ethan Yardley now?"

Serena Yardley’s gaze involuntarily drifted back toward the pair in the distance.

Seeing Ethan still so close to Sylvia Schuyler, she felt a surge of irritation.

She looked away, her voice tinged with disappointment. "We don’t have a relationship."

Nina Thorne was utterly confused.

Seeing Serena’s gloomy expression and then looking over at Ethan Yardley, who was chatting so harmoniously with his ex-fiancée, Nina figured he probably didn’t have romantic feelings for Serena after all.

’Or maybe he just sees her as a little sister?’

Sighing to herself, Nina Thorne didn’t dwell on it. She pointed toward two other people, drawing Serena Yardley’s attention.

"Serena, look over there."

Following Nina Thorne’s finger, Serena Yardley saw two men in aprons by a barbecue grill in the distance.

She asked curiously, "Who are they?"

Nina Thorne introduced them.

"The taller one is Quinn Gardner, my husband. The one who’s a little shorter is Julian Thorne, my younger brother. They’re both very handsome, aren’t they? Do you want to go meet them?"

Serena Yardley was stunned. Her eyes widened as she looked at Nina Thorne. "Nina, you’re married?"

Nina Thorne laughed. "I even have a five-year-old son. He’s with his grandparents right now, but I’ll bring him over to play with you some other day."

"Okay..." Serena Yardley suddenly felt a pang of envy.

Thinking of the baby she had just lost, another wave of heartache washed over her.

Paying no mind to Ethan Yardley and Sylvia Schuyler, who were still chatting off to the side, Nina Thorne took Serena Yardley’s hand and led her toward her husband.

"Come on, I’ll introduce you. My brother isn’t just handsome; he’s also a great cook, good-tempered, and an absolute gentleman with women. If you don’t have a boyfriend, you should consider him, you know."

Serena Yardley was speechless.
