The moment Serena stepped into the backyard, Ethan noticed her out of the corner of his eye.
But he pretended not to see her and continued talking with Sylvia Schuyler.
When Sylvia saw Serena approach, she deliberately blocked Ethan’s line of sight and continued to chat idly with him.
Ethan saw Serena walk away with Nina Thorne, acting as if she hadn’t seen him either. Despite himself, his gaze followed them.
"Ethan, I’ve got nothing to do right now anyway. How about I come work at your company as your secretary?"
Seeing Ethan’s gaze wander, Sylvia quickly tried to find another topic to keep him engaged.
"What could you do?"
Ethan pulled his gaze back.
"I can do anything! Don’t forget, I have a master’s degree."
"Fine." Ethan wasn’t really paying attention and agreed offhandedly.
...
Not far away,
Nina Thorne led Serena over to two men who were busy and said with a smile,
"Come on, let me introduce you to my sister."
The two men looked up at the same time, their eyes falling on Serena.
One was Quinn Gardner, Nina Thorne’s husband. He was thirty years old and the CEO of the Grant Group. He had previously been a professor of medicine—the kind who personally performed surgeries.
He later left that position to take over his family’s business.
He stood at 187 centimeters, with exceptional looks and a distinguished air.
Of course, he was also one of Ethan’s childhood friends.
The other was Julian Thorne, Nina Thorne’s younger brother. At twenty-two, he was an acting major at a film academy. He had acted in a couple of campus dramas, but his career was still lukewarm.
Anyone who didn’t follow the entertainment industry wouldn’t recognize him.
He was 185 centimeters tall and exceptionally handsome. He had sharp brows, bright eyes, and a high-bridged nose. The corners of his lips were naturally tilted up, giving the impression that he was always smiling.
One look at his face was enough to make one’s heart flutter, making it impossible to look away.
The two men looked Serena up and down.
Serena looked back at them and said, feeling extremely bashful,
"Hi, I’m Serena."
She didn’t recognize either of them, nor had she ever met them before.
Quinn Gardner smiled and spoke up. "I think I remember you. You’re the one Ethan sponsored through school, right?"
Serena smiled as well and nodded. "Yes."
"That’s great. Look at you, all grown up. Tell us what you want to eat, and we’ll grill it for you."
Serena was indeed a bit hungry. She looked at the food still cooking on the grill, her mouth watering as she swallowed.
"I’m not a picky eater. I’ll eat anything."
"Alright. Just wait a bit, we’ll have it ready for you soon."
Serena nodded. Noticing the other man was looking at her, she greeted him politely, "Hello."
Julian Thorne smiled at Serena. "Hi. I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere before."
Completely baffled, Serena glanced at Nina Thorne beside her.
Nina Thorne kicked her brother. "Cut the crap. When have you ever met Serena?"
"No, really, I feel like I’ve seen her somewhere before."
Julian Thorne racked his brain. The girl’s large, bright, dark eyes, in particular, felt incredibly familiar. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Suddenly, something clicked. He asked Serena, "Did you ever live at the Sunshine Orphanage?"
Serena nodded. "Yes, I grew up at the Sunshine Orphanage."
But she had no memory of this handsome young man.
"That must be it, then. I remember my friends and I were playing basketball next to the orphanage, and one of the kids fell into the fishpond. I jumped the fence to pull them out. Was that you?"
He remembered hearing the orphanage director calling out the name ’Serena’.
Serena was speechless.
When she was eight, Nina had bought her a beautiful doll. She had just brought it back to the orphanage when the other children snatched it away.
When she tried to get it back, the other kids pushed and shoved her, eventually pushing her into the fishpond.
She had been flailing in the water for a long time when she saw a chubby older boy jump down from the wall, rush into the pond, and lift her out.
The boy didn’t tell her his name and left before she could even thank him, but she remembered one thing clearly: he was very chubby.
But looking at the man in front of her now... so handsome, so slim, with such a good physique...
She couldn’t possibly connect him to the chubby boy who had saved her all those years ago.
"Hey! I get why you don’t recognize me. We were just kids back then, after all."
"Back then I was really chubby, though. I was ten, weighed about 140 pounds, and had acne. A far cry from how I look now,"
Julian Thorne said with a laugh.
Serena was speechless once again.
This time, she believed him.
She believed that this tall, handsome, and cheerful man was indeed the chubby boy who had pulled her from the fishpond all those years ago.
’I can’t believe we’re meeting again.’
Serena grew emotional.
Her eyes welled up with tears before she even realized it.
She took a step back and gave Julian Thorne a deep bow, her voice filled with heartfelt gratitude.
"Thank you. Thank you for not being afraid of the danger, for climbing the wall into the orphanage to pull me out of the fishpond."
Julian Thorne suddenly felt a little embarrassed. He quickly reached out to pat her head comfortingly.
"There’s no need to be so formal. It wasn’t a big deal. That fishpond was really shallow. Even if I hadn’t gone in, you wouldn’t have drowned. At worst, you would have just soaked in there a little longer."
"But I was so little back then. I really could have drowned."
"Alright, alright, let’s not talk about the past. Look, I’m about to make you cry."
Julian Thorne, being naturally friendly, quickly grabbed a tissue to wipe the tears from her eyes.
But just then, a voice as cold and sharp as an icicle cut in. "Serena Yardley, I told you to bring the wine. What do you think you’re doing?"
Ethan couldn’t stand to watch any longer.
’That woman... As soon as she comes over, she’s cozying up to another man. Does she have no sense of propriety?’
’Or is this just her true nature? Does she want to seduce every man she meets?’
’Does she think I’m dead or something?’
At the sound of his voice, all four of them turned to look at Ethan.
Nina Thorne spoke up. "Ethan, why are you being so harsh with Serena? You may be her boss, but you can’t treat her with that kind of attitude."
Quinn Gardner chimed in, agreeing with his wife. "Exactly. A man should be a gentleman and be gentle with women."
"Ethan, is Serena your employee? Shouldn’t she still be in school at her age?"
Julian Thorne asked curiously.
However, hearing him call her ’Serena’ only irritated Ethan further.
He offered no explanation. His gaze remained fixed on Serena, as cold as daggers. "You’ve delivered the wine. Now go back. What are you doing lingering here?"
Serena felt utterly humiliated.
’He seems to be reminding me that this is a gathering for his friends, his equals. A person of my humble background has no place here.’
She took the hint. Lowering her head, she turned to leave.
But Julian Thorne suddenly reached out and grabbed her arm. "Serena, since you’re here, you’re our guest. Stay, and let us make you something good to eat."
Serena looked up at Ethan.
Seeing the thunderous expression on his face, like a volcano about to erupt, she turned apologetically to Julian Thorne.
"Thank you, Mr. Julian, but I’m not hungry. I should get going."
"You’re not going anywhere."
Nina Thorne blocked Serena’s path and glared at Ethan.
"Ethan, what is wrong with you? Don’t you consider Serena a sister? Just because you’ve helped her and sponsored her education doesn’t mean you can order her around whenever you please!"
"She’s a human being, and she has her dignity!"
