Chapter 57: Chapter 57: 24-Hour Personal Female Secretary

「The next day.」

Serena Yardley woke up to find the spot beside her empty.

When she sat up, she saw Ethan asleep on the sofa on the balcony.

A bitter pang went through her heart.

’I can’t believe he despises me this much.’

She thought about how he used to be—the man who would hug her the moment he got home, who would snuggle up to her in bed and tell her how good she smelled. Now, he’d rather sleep on a narrow sofa than share a bed with her.

Serena Yardley felt a devastating blow to her heart.

She silently got out of bed to wash up.

Perhaps the sound of running water from the bathroom woke the man, who was always a light sleeper.

He glanced at the large bed and saw no one.

He then checked his watch. It was 6:30.

Ethan Yardley also got up to wash.

But as he pushed the bathroom door open, he saw Serena Yardley sitting on the toilet, in the middle of her business.

Serena hadn’t expected him to come in. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment as she sat there and cried out, "You... you go out first! You can come in when I’m done."

Ethan, however, acted as if he hadn’t seen a thing and started washing up himself.

Serena was still on the toilet. Seeing that he wasn’t leaving, she felt utterly mortified and activated the bidet function on the smart toilet.

Then she quietly pulled up her pants and quickly closed the toilet lid.

The next second, she bolted out of the bathroom.

The man, still washing up, glanced at her hasty retreat and sneered inwardly: ’It’s not like I haven’t seen it before.’

But the thought of her and that other man made his temper flare.

He finished washing up and went to the walk-in closet. Only then did Serena go back into the bathroom to finish.

By the time they were both ready, the bedroom door was unlocked from the outside.

It was still early. Aside from the servants, the elders of the family weren’t up yet.

Ethan left with Serena Yardley without even greeting his parents.

As they got into Yannick Young’s car, Yannick handed over a document. "President, here’s what you asked me to prepare."

Ethan took it without looking and passed it directly to Serena beside him. "Sign it."

Serena saw that it was a document, and her heart clenched violently.

’So it’s the Divorce Agreement?’

’He’s finally come to his senses and is letting me go!’ 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

’This is great. I’ll be free soon.’

Even though this was what she wanted, as Serena took the document, she felt as if her heart was being ripped apart.

It hurt.

But she endured it, holding her breath as she opened the folder and took out its contents.

When she saw the words "Labor Contract" written in black and white, she was stunned.

She turned to the man beside her, confused.

Ethan didn’t look at her, his face an emotionless mask. "Are you illiterate, or do you need me to read it to you?" he said coldly.

Serena quickly looked away and focused on the contract’s contents.

She found a bill stating that she owed him one million.

The labor contract stipulated that she, Serena Yardley, must work under him, Ethan Yardley, and her salary would be used to pay off the debt.

The employment relationship, tied to the debt, would only be terminated when the one million was paid in full.

When Serena finished reading, she turned to glare at the man beside her, too furious to speak.

Ethan reminded her, "Sign it."

Serena refused. "My monthly salary is only ten thousand. At this rate, it will take me almost ten years to pay off this million! That’s not fair."

"What part of it is unfair?" he asked, staring at her.

"I owe you, but... but I never asked you to fund my education or buy me nice clothes back then.

Now you want me to pay this money back? I won’t! At worst, I’ll give you back the clothes and return the knowledge I’ve learned."

’He just loves to bully me.’

’It’s one thing not to trust me, but now he wants to keep me by his side as a slave. I won’t bow down to this capitalist.’

"Serena Yardley, so I was wrong to fund your education?"

Ethan couldn’t believe she was resorting to such twisted arguments.

But no matter how she refused, she would have to spend her life paying back what she owed him.

"I’m not signing it, period." Serena tossed the contract aside and turned to look out the window.

Ethan looked at the discarded contract, his lips tightening as he suppressed his anger.

"You can either sign this contract and we get a divorce, or our marriage just drags on like this."

He looked at her. "You must be desperate to leave me and go offer incense at Gabriel Galloway’s grave, right?"

Serena, "..."

She whipped her head around to meet his gaze, glaring at him and gritting her teeth.

’So he’ll only agree to a divorce if I sign this contract?’

’But if we divorce and I’m still tied to him by this contract, what’s the difference from not divorcing at all?’

"If you still haven’t signed by the time we get home, you’ll spend the rest of your life locked in the house. Don’t even think about taking a single step outside."

He threatened impatiently, his face dark.

Serena considered her options.

’Being his employee is better than staying married, I guess.’

’After the divorce, I won’t have to care about his relationships with other women. Once I pay back the million, I’ll be completely free.’

’Ten years... maybe that will pass quickly.’

’In ten years, I’ll only be thirty—the prime age for a woman, mature and charming. And him...’

’A forty-year-old man. Who’d want him then?’

’So, Serena, sign it quickly. End this marriage, work hard to pay him back, and then you’ll be free.’

With this in mind, Serena picked up the contract again, took the pen, and wrote her name on the signature line.

After signing, she handed the contract to the man beside her and asked, "So, when are we getting our divorce certificate?"

Ethan took the contract without a word.

"Let’s do it today," Serena said. "We can go home, get our household registration books, and go straight to the Civil Affairs Bureau."

Ethan still didn’t respond, treating Serena as if she were thin air.

Just as Serena was about to shout at him again, she noticed that Yannick’s car wasn’t heading home. They were almost at the company.

Serena was completely bewildered. "What do you think you’re doing?"

"Are you an idiot?"

Ethan looked at her impatiently. "You signed the contract. It’s a workday. Of course you have to come to work."

The car stopped in front of the Serene Empire Tower. Yannick Young opened the door, and Ethan Yardley stepped out. He unhurriedly straightened his clothes before striding directly into the lobby.

Yannick didn’t follow him. Instead, he opened the door on the other side and smiled at Serena.

"Miss Serena, please get out. I’ll show you around the company and help you get familiar with the environment."

Serena, "..."

Watching Ethan walk away, she really couldn’t figure out what game he was playing.

’He clearly doesn’t trust me, dislikes me, and despises me, yet he insists on keeping me by his side.’

’Is he trying to torture me?’

’Well, I won’t just be a fish on the chopping block for him to gut at will.’

With no other choice, Serena got out of the car and walked beside Yannick.

As Yannick showed her around, he also explained her upcoming job responsibilities.

"Your scope of work is simple. You’ll be the President’s 24-hour personal assistant for his daily life. Your duties will include making his coffee, arranging his meals, and preparing his clothes.

You should also find time to get your driver’s license. Sometimes when I’m away on business, you’ll have to drive the President to and from work."
