Serena Yardley knew her uncle was doing this for her own good.
But with him controlling her like this, when would she ever become independent?
She continued defiantly, "Even if I buy a house, it has to be with money I earned myself. I won’t buy one with your money."
"Say that again."
Ethan Yardley’s face darkened further. ’Has she not spent enough of my money growing up? Besides, some things were rightfully hers anyway.’
Serena Yardley’s eyes flickered, and she didn’t dare meet the man’s gaze again.
Ethan Yardley stared at her and added, "You’re going back home tonight. You can move out when you’ve earned enough money to buy your own house."
"I..."
Serena Yardley opened her mouth to argue, but Ethan Yardley’s cold gaze pierced her.
Frustrated, Serena could only shut her mouth and change the subject resentfully. "Are you guys going to order or not?"
"Whatever," Ethan said.
Serena swiped on the tablet a few times, ordered several of the most expensive items in the restaurant, and turned to leave.
Just as she was about to head to the kitchen entrance to put in the order, several well-dressed women suddenly walked into the restaurant.
Seeing that her other colleagues were busy, Serena smiled and went to greet them. "Hello, do you have a reservation?"
The women sized Serena up and gave the name for their reservation.
Serena smiled and gestured. "This way, please."
As the girls followed Serena to their table, they whispered among themselves.
"That must be her, the one we were told about. I have a photo of her; it looks like her."
"It is her. She’s short and skinny, but her face is pretty."
Having confirmed their target, the girls sat down at the booth next to Ethan Yardley’s, as directed by Serena.
Serena handed them the tablet. "You can look at the menu first. Just call me if you need anything."
The girls said nothing, their eyes following Serena as she walked away.
A short while later, Serena came over with a pitcher to pour water for them.
As she was pouring, one of the girls deliberately shoved her, causing Serena to be caught off guard and spill water on the girl.
Serena quickly apologized, "I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry! Did it burn you?"
The girl shot to her feet and raised a hand to strike Serena.
Serena reacted instantly, taking a quick step back to dodge the incoming slap.
Seeing that her slap had missed, the girl’s face twisted in anger as she yelled, "Do you have any idea how much this dress costs? You burned me! Get your manager over here!"
Serena had never been a pushover.
She had always lived by the principle of ’I won’t bother you if you don’t bother me’.
When the girl yelled at her, she retorted without hesitation:
"Miss, if you hadn’t shoved me, I wouldn’t have spilled water on you. Since you brought this on yourself, it’s useless to call for the manager."
"You..."
The girl was livid.
Seeing this, her friends got up, ready to get physical with Serena.
Serena instinctively backed away from them, holding up the water pitcher and shouting:
"Don’t come any closer! This restaurant has security cameras. You all look like you’re in the prime of your youth; don’t be stupid and do something that’ll land you in jail for a few days."
The girls looked up and saw that there was indeed a security camera, and their confidence suddenly wavered. ’But our client told us to teach this woman a lesson. We have to give her a hard time, right?’
One of the girls started shouting for the manager again.
「At the next table.」
With just one look from Ethan Yardley, Yannick Young knew what to do.
He simply notified the manager.
The manager quickly arrived with several security guards and demanded of the girls, "What’s going on here?"
The girls scrambled to accuse Serena. "Your waitress spilled hot water on my friend, and she’s not even sorry!"
"Fire her immediately, or we won’t let this go."
"And make her pay for medical expenses."
The manager couldn’t listen to any more of this; the big boss from the next table was watching. He gestured to the guards behind him. "Throw these troublemakers out. And notify all our branches—get a good look at their faces and ban them from all our chain restaurants from now on."
The security guards understood and moved forward to hustle the girls out.
The girls were dumbfounded. They shouted indignantly, "Your waitress burned us with water! What right do you, the manager, have to throw us out? Aren’t you afraid we’ll blow this up?"
The manager couldn’t be bothered to argue. "We have security cameras here. If you want to blow this up, go right ahead."
"Throw them out."
The guards, clearly not ones for chivalry, roughly shoved the girls out of the restaurant.
The entire restaurant watched as the girls were kicked out, a truly pathetic sight.
After dealing with the situation, the manager turned back to Serena. Instead of scolding her, he offered words of comfort:
"That’s how it is in the service industry. You meet all kinds of people. Don’t let it get to you, just keep up the good work."
Serena was rather touched. She nodded quickly. "Thank you, manager."
After the manager left, Serena’s gaze fell on the adjacent booth.
’Their order should be ready soon,’ Serena thought, and she hurried to get the food.
When she returned to booth 88, she asked while setting down their utensils, "Did you two go to my manager just now?"
Ethan Yardley’s expression was still grim. He said coldly, "This line of work doesn’t suit you. After today, you’re not allowed to come back tomorrow."
He’d only been sitting here for ten minutes, and someone was already causing trouble for her. ’It just goes to show how unsafe she is out here on her own without me. And the little ungrateful thing still wants to get away from me. Could she even survive in this world without me?!’
Serena was immediately unhappy to hear that. "That was just an accident. I think I’m quite suited for this job. Besides, I haven’t even graduated yet. This is just a summer job."
Ethan ate elegantly as he spoke:
"If you’re so set on having a summer job, you can be a clerk at my company."
Serena refused. "No way. I’m trying to leave you. What would be the point of going to your company?"
Impatient, Ethan threw down his utensils after just a couple of bites and stood up, tossing out a few cold words:
"I’m giving you two choices: either come to my company or stay at home. If you come back here tomorrow, I’ll shut this restaurant down."
He left, radiating a cold authority.
Serena was speechless. "..."
’So this restaurant belongs to my uncle?’
Watching his receding back, she had the sinking feeling that she would never escape his grasp in this lifetime.
’So frustrating!’
"Serena, hurry over here and help!" a colleague called out from a distance.
Serena rushed over.
When their shift ended that evening, her colleagues saw Serena standing at the restaurant entrance instead of walking back to the dorms with them. They looked back and gestured to her. "Let’s go, Serena. Back to the dorm."
Serena said, a little embarrassed, "I have to go home, so I won’t be going back to the dorm. You guys go on ahead."
Her colleagues didn’t insist. After all, she was a local with a house to live in and parents to be with.
Unlike them, who had left their hometowns far behind to eke out a living.
Watching her colleagues walk away, Serena, though reluctant, went to the roadside to hail a cab home.
Back to the home she shared with her uncle.
Just then, a taxi stopped in front of her. Serena pulled open the door, got in, and gave the address. "To The Sovereign Villa."
The driver didn’t respond. After locking the doors, he sped off toward the suburbs.
Serena noticed the car was going very fast, definitely speeding, and this didn’t seem to be the way home.
She suddenly began to panic and quickly took out her phone to call the police.
But before she could even dial the number, the driver in front turned and sprayed something at her. Within three seconds, Serena felt dizzy and lost consciousness.
