Chapter 45: Chapter 45: First Day Away From Uncle

It was Serena Yardley’s first day at work, and she was a little clumsy.

Fortunately, her coworkers were all very nice. They were patient with her and even helped her with her tasks.

After just half a day, she was already getting along well with them.

But as closing time approached, Gabriel Galloway was still sitting at his table. A coworker ran over to ask Serena:

"Serena Yardley, that incredibly handsome guy sitting by the window, is he your boyfriend? He’s been here since this morning and still hasn’t left. Is he waiting for you to get off work?"

Serena Yardley followed her coworker’s finger and looked over.

Seeing Gabriel Galloway still sitting there motionlessly, she was rather impressed that a person could sit from morning until night without even getting up to move.

She told her coworker, "He’s not my boyfriend. I don’t know him that well. I’ll go talk to him."

Walking over to Gabriel Galloway’s side, Serena Yardley stood over him and unfriendly told him to leave. "You should pay your bill and go. We’re closing."

Gabriel Galloway stood up, leisurely adjusting his clothes. He smiled and asked Serena, "So, I’ll come again tomorrow?"

Serena’s face fell. "Why would you come here? Gabriel Galloway, if you keep this up, I’ll tell Ethan Yardley you’re harassing me."

Gabriel Galloway just laughed again.

He raised his hand and gently tapped Serena’s head, a gesture both flirtatious and doting. "I was just kidding. I won’t come tomorrow."

He didn’t want to cause her any trouble, so he tactfully paid his bill and left.

As Serena watched Gabriel Galloway leave, her ears were filled with the teasing clamor of her coworkers. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Serena Yardley, is that guy chasing you? He’s so handsome."

"A guy that handsome and tall, with such great fashion sense... Why wouldn’t you want to be his girlfriend?"

"I’m so envious of girls who have all the luck with guys."

Serena snapped back to reality and changed the subject. "Could you guys please show me to the staff dorm? Thank you. I’ll order takeout and treat you all to a late-night snack tonight."

"Yeah, okay! Let’s go."

Her coworkers were very enthusiastic. After closing up the restaurant, the group of girls led Serena Yardley to the staff dormitory.

「10:00 PM.」

Ethan Yardley left Sylvia Schuyler’s residence and drove back to The Sovereign Villa alone.

When he returned, Mrs. Miller was still awake. She hurried to the door to take Ethan Yardley’s coat. "Sir, you’re back so late."

"I was busy."

Ethan Yardley asked Mrs. Miller, "Is she asleep?"

Mrs. Miller shook her head. "Miss Serena didn’t come back. But she did call me. She said she’s working now and will be living elsewhere. She even sent me the address of her workplace."

Ethan Yardley’s face darkened as he walked straight upstairs.

Of course, he knew where Serena Yardley was working. What he hadn’t expected was that she wouldn’t come back here to sleep at night.

’So, is she planning on never coming back?’

Ethan Yardley went to the bathroom, took a shower, changed into his pajamas, and returned to the master bedroom.

Standing before the large bed, he recalled how Serena used to cling to him and demand a hug every time he came back. A complex mix of emotions stirred in his heart.

Sometimes, he felt an emptiness in his heart, as if he had lost something important.

He walked over to the window, sat down, and lit a cigarette he held between his fingers.

He took a couple of drags, and the swirling smoke shrouded his handsome, yet gloomy and resolute face, seeming to add another layer of desolate sorrow.

He had never been a smoker, but he had been so vexed lately that the scent of a cigarette could help him forget some of his troubles.

「Meanwhile.」

「The staff dormitory.」

Serena Yardley was sharing a room with a group of girls, sleeping in bunk beds.

There were a full eight girls sleeping in the one room.

To welcome Serena Yardley, everyone chatted enthusiastically until the middle of the night before finally falling asleep.

But once the dormitory fell silent, Serena Yardley found she couldn’t sleep.

She lay with her eyes open, staring into the darkness, reminiscing about all the little moments she shared with him.

’She thought about how he always held her as they slept, how she was used to snuggling up against him, and how she couldn’t even get out of bed in the morning without a hug from him.’

’He doted on her, indulged her every whim.’

’Before Sylvia Schuyler showed up, they had been so in love.’

’Ever since Sylvia Schuyler appeared, everything had changed.’

Serena Yardley forced herself to try and sleep, to stop thinking about him.

’This was her first night living on her own after leaving him; she couldn’t give up on the very first night.’

「The next day.」

「At The Paramount, inside the high-rise villa where Sylvia Schuyler lived.」

A subordinate informed her via phone call, "Miss, Serena Yardley is now working at a restaurant in University City."

Sylvia Schuyler, who was lying down getting a manicure when she received the call, arched a pretty eyebrow and asked with a laugh, "What kind of work could she possibly do in a restaurant?"

"A waitress, it seems."

"Hah. The wife of a major tycoon working as a waitress in a restaurant. She really isn’t afraid of embarrassing herself."

Pleased with how her nails turned out, Sylvia Schuyler admired them with satisfaction as she gave an order over the phone, "Find a few people to go teach her a proper lesson."

The subordinate replied, "Yes, Miss."

Then, as if remembering something, the subordinate added, "We’ve also discovered that ’that man’ is still keeping an eye on Serena Yardley. We don’t know what his motives are."

Sylvia Schuyler knew who her subordinate was referring to.

’He seems to have a mysterious background; he’s no simple character.’

’Since he’s so interested in Serena Yardley, why shouldn’t I lend him a helping hand?’

...

At twelve noon, the restaurant was at its busiest.

Dressed in her restaurant uniform, Serena Yardley darted between tables, either delivering food or clearing dishes, busy beyond belief.

Suddenly, Ethan Yardley and Yannick Young appeared as if from nowhere. Both were impeccably dressed in suits, exuding an extraordinary aura that made every waitress in the restaurant gasp in surprise, their eyes turning into hearts as they swooned.

Still, one of the more level-headed waitresses approached and asked respectfully, "Excuse me, gentlemen, do you have a reservation?"

Although this restaurant was upscale and luxurious, with a high per-person cost, it had a very high volume of customers.

Therefore, anyone who wanted to dine here had to make a reservation in advance.

Of course, these low-level employees would never have guessed that the two men standing before them were the owners of the restaurant.

Although Ethan Yardley was the richest man in the country, he rarely appeared before the media’s cameras.

Many people might know the name Ethan Yardley, but they had no idea what he looked like.

In response to the waitress’s question, Yannick Young gave his name.

Seeing that they had a reservation, the waitress quickly led the two men to an empty booth.

Serena Yardley had just picked up a dish from the kitchen pass-through, ready to deliver it to a customer’s table.

As a coworker brushed past her, she whispered in her ear, "Go check out booth 88. That customer is really handsome."

Serena Yardley wasn’t interested in handsome men.

In her opinion, no man in the world, no matter how handsome, could ever compare to the man who held her heart.

She hadn’t paid any mind to her coworker’s words, but after she delivered the dish, her gaze still couldn’t help but drift toward booth 88.

The sight left her completely stunned.

Yannick Young looked at her, offering a slight smile and a nod in greeting.

Serena, however, felt a pang of guilt and didn’t dare to approach.

But just then, that same coworker brought her the ordering tablet and gestured toward them. "That customer looks pretty aloof. Can you go handle him for me?"

With no other choice, Serena Yardley took the tablet and walked over to booth 88. Pretending not to know them, she asked in a professional tone:

"What would you two gentlemen like to order?"

Yannick Young remained silent. It wasn’t his place to speak here.

Ethan Yardley’s deep, melancholic eyes were fixed on Serena Yardley, and his voice was laced with a bone-chilling cold. "Is this what you call a good life?"

Serena Yardley pouted and retorted, "Well, I’m just getting started. Things are bound to get better over time."

Ethan Yardley’s handsome face darkened, his thin lips pressed into a tight line.

"No matter how much time it takes, you can’t be crammed into one room with a group of people. You either come back home to sleep tonight, or you go buy a place of your own."
