Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 44: Agreeing to Let Her Go
Ethan Yardley never expected this woman would dare to call him a dog.
And dare to sue him.
’Who gave her the nerve?’
Reaching out, Ethan Yardley pinched Serena Yardley’s round, fair little face. He pressed his lips together and sneered,
"Have you forgotten who got you where you are today? Now that your wings have grown, you think I can’t control you anymore, is that it?"
Serena slapped his hand away, her eyes filled with hatred. "Well, I let you sleep with me for half a year. I should have paid back whatever I owed you by now."
"Did you sleep with me, or did I sleep with you?" he retorted, avoiding her point.
’She was the one who initiated it plenty of times. How did this turn into him taking advantage of her?’
’That was my first time too, you know.’
"Whatever. I’m divorcing you, and as soon as we’re divorced, I’m leaving. Otherwise, I’ll go on a hunger strike and starve myself to death."
Unable to win the argument, Serena resorted to making a scene.
She was furious right now. If her butt didn’t hurt so much that she couldn’t get up, she would’ve definitely given him a proper fight.
’And she refused to believe she couldn’t win.’
Ethan didn’t want to bicker with a young woman.
Seeing her lying on her stomach, afraid to move, he figured he must have hit her quite hard earlier. He personally brought over a bowl, picked up some food with chopsticks, and tried to feed her.
"Eat this, and I’ll drop the matter of you leaving."
Serena turned her head away. "I’m not eating."
"Be good now."
His tone softened, and he became patient.
Serena only felt wronged. She muttered, "You’re always like this, hitting me and then offering a treat. What do you take me for, a pet?"
Ethan was speechless.
’It’s not like he had a choice. She just couldn’t understand him.’
He brought the food to her lips again.
Serena stubbornly refused to eat.
Ethan grew a little impatient. "Serena Yardley, eat."
"I won’t~"
"Then what will it take for you to eat?"
’She’s already skin and bones. How can she not eat?’
’If he weren’t genuinely afraid she’d starve, he really couldn’t be bothered with her.’
Serena retorted petulantly, "I want to leave you. You’re not allowed to control me anymore."
Ethan...
A sudden pain stabbed at his heart. He frowned, clearly unaccustomed to such an uncomfortable feeling.
He pulled his hand back and sat beside her, watching her lying on her stomach. After about two minutes of silence, he finally asked,
"You never wanted to leave me before. Why are you so desperate to leave now?"
Serena sniffled and said miserably, "My heart is dead."
"So you don’t like me anymore?"
His voice suddenly grew low and raspy, and his entire expression darkened.
Serena didn’t deny it. "You’re in such a difficult position. Wouldn’t letting me go solve everything?"
Ethan didn’t say a word.
He kept his head down, trying hard to hide the sour ache in his chest.
’He was very reluctant to admit that he couldn’t bear to leave her either.’
’But he had to be responsible for Sylvia Schuyler.’
’Between the two, if he really had to choose, perhaps letting this woman go would be better for everyone.’
Ethan took a deep breath and said in a heavy voice, "Eat your food, and I’ll let you go."
Serena’s heart clenched. She looked up at the man beside her, finding it hard to believe. "Are you serious?"
Ethan looked back at her. "Yes. But you’re not allowed to leave this city. I’ll give you money. You can buy a house or rent an apartment, whatever you want.
Just don’t disappear. Don’t let me lose track of you."
’Otherwise, he would worry.’
Hearing this, Serena’s heart felt both warm and pained. She blinked her large eyes, which were becoming moist again.
She asked, confused, "If you’re letting me go, why would you still need to find me?"
Ethan casually made up an excuse. "I don’t want a woman who was with me, Ethan Yardley, to be displaced and end up living a life worse than a dog’s after she leaves me.
So you can only live within a range where I can see you. As long as you’re doing well, I won’t bother you. But if you’re not doing well after leaving me, I’ll just bring you back."
Serena was speechless.
Pouting, she lay there with her head buried, truly unable to bear leaving the old man who always thought of her best interests.
But if she didn’t leave, she’d have to suffer watching him be with Sylvia Schuyler.
After some thought, Serena nodded in agreement. "Okay. I’ll definitely prove to you that without you by my side, I’ll live an even better life than I do now."
A bitter feeling welled up in Ethan’s heart.
He paid her no more mind, rising to his feet. "Then when you’re living a better life than you are now, I’ll bring you the Divorce Agreement to sign."
He strode toward the door.
Serena immediately looked up at him again. "Can’t we sign it now?"
Ethan paused but didn’t turn back, tossing over his shoulder, "We’ll talk after you’ve proven to me that you can live well."
He closed the door and left.
Serena averted her gaze and slowly sat up to start eating.
As she ate, she couldn’t help but cry again.
She knew the old man was a good person. He didn’t want her to leave because he was afraid she wouldn’t fare well on her own.
’So he really has been concerned about me all along.’
If it weren’t for Sylvia Schuyler, perhaps she and the old man could have truly lived a life of mutual respect and grown old together.
But fate just had to play a cruel joke on them, sending Sylvia Schuyler to torment them.
’It’s okay, Serena. To put the old man’s mind at ease, to prove your own abilities, you have to work hard. Starting tomorrow, you’ll go out and find a place to live and a job.’
’From now on, you’ll escape the old man’s protection and start a new life of your own.’
After quickly finishing her meal, Serena went to the bathroom, took a shower, and then returned to bed for a good rest.
「The next day.」
At seven in the morning, Serena got up on time.
After washing up and getting dressed, she went downstairs. Ethan wasn’t there, but Mrs. Miller had already prepared breakfast.
Serena left only after she had eaten breakfast.
The previous night, she had found a few restaurants near her university online that were hiring summer help. The pay was five thousand yuan a month, with room and board included.
She felt it was a perfect fit for her and scheduled an interview for ten o’clock.
At ten in the morning, Serena arrived at the restaurant on time. After meeting the manager, she was unexpectedly hired after just a few words.
She was told to start work that very day, and they even arranged a room for her in the staff dormitory.
Serena hadn’t expected things to go so smoothly. She immediately changed into the restaurant’s uniform and began the first job of her life.
The restaurant was quite large, with upscale and luxurious decor.
Before Serena had a chance to get to know her colleagues, she was called over to clear some tableware.
Just as she was absorbed in wiping a table, a gentle and pleasant voice suddenly sounded by her ear.
"Why did you run off to become a waitress in a restaurant as soon as you got back?"
Serena froze and looked up.
When she saw it was Gabriel Galloway, she had the strange feeling that he had planted a tracking device on her.
She glared at Gabriel Galloway irritably. "I thought I made myself perfectly clear to you before. Why are you still haunting me?"
Gabriel Galloway smiled and sat down at a nearby table. "I didn’t come looking for you. I’m here to eat."
As he spoke, he took out his phone to scan the QR code and order.
Serena couldn’t be bothered with him and turned to clean another area.
At that moment, a black sedan was parked on the side of the road not far from the restaurant.
Inside the car, a man sat with a gloomy expression, his gaze deep and intense.
After a long silence, he gave a grim order to the subordinate beside him, "Find a chance and kidnap that woman."
’If she won’t listen to his warnings, then she can’t blame him for being ruthless.’
