The Devil Of Probability-Chapter 64: Beautiful Destruction
Silas lifted his head, which was already full of regret as his vision got a grasp of what was happening. The entity had shattered into pieces, the darkness like goo and flesh.
It slowly pieced itself back together, this time, with a more recognizable appearance. The darkness had become a deep violet-purple, with layers of topaz blue seeping in.
It was a beautiful yet terrifying sight. On one hand, it was as if the universe was piecing itself back together. But with every piece, it seemed to intensify the impending death the entity carried.
It was overwhelming, in fact, pinning Silas to the floor. Not just mentally — but physically.
Silas was shoved into the ground, creating a small crater. It took him moments to recover, which he was only able to do because of Faye.
She dragged him out of the crater, hurriedly running toward the direction she had seen Roro come from. She didn’t need to speak; he immediately caught wind of what her plan was.
They needed to get to someone else — somewhere else... or else they would be dead before they could even scream for help.
Whilst running, Silas would occasionally shoot down buildings, making sure the entity would have a harder time tracking them.
"Where did that bird come from again?" Faye asked Silas.
"The west."
Silas was a tad confused. Had she been leading them the wrong direction this entire time? He checked his surroundings one last time to make sure they were heading west before following through with the plan.
At the same time, Simon and Alina were rushing towards the duo, Roro slightly ahead of them in the sky.
This new spiritual presence that the entity emitted could be felt from where they stood, even at the distance they were at.
[Stabilization]
Alina put the effect of her Signature on the two, letting the two put all of their power into their legs. Every step was followed by a fracture to their bones, but it was swiftly healed due to the effects of Stabilization.
At the same time, Simon sent Roro further in front of them to scout for Silas and Faye.
When Roro eventually found the two, he could tell something was off immediately. He sent a mental signal to Simon, warning him that something would happen to the duo soon.
What that was, no one could tell, but Silas and Faye could already sense they were under its effects.
It was as if every building surrounding them was shifting closer — crushing them.
But from their vision, this was not the case. Silas kept shooting these buildings, trying to figure out if manipulating their sense of gravity would somehow put this ability off-center.
But with every crumpled building, the effects only seemed to attach to every piece of debris. Accepting this fate, he stopped using his Signature altogether.
The two did not know that it was attacked based on spiritual presence. This caused Faye to keep her Signature in use instead of deactivating hers as Silas had done.
Thus, the chase continued, and eventually, their movements began to lag in time. They fell out of sync with each other, with Silas now being the one ahead.
There was no choice but to continue their sprint, and Roro even called out towards the two.
The sudden noise swiftly caught their attention, and he acted as a guide. However, his flying speed was significantly reduced to keep up with the two.
If he lost them here — they would certainly die. Roro softly flapped his wings, looking between the skies and ground.
Nothing happened for a few seconds, which made Silas feel a sense of unease. Simon, at this point, had inched closer to Silas and Faye and could feel the sudden shift himself.
Then, a voice called out in their heads:
"Do not free me." The deep, monotone voice called out.
(What does that mean?!)
Simon stopped in his tracks immediately, looking around as if he had seen a ghost. His eyes shrank to the size of a pea, and Alina did not dare to take a single step without him.
"Did you hear that too?"
The usual unwavering Alina showed obvious signs of fright.
They had no choice but to assume it was the entity, and it sent a chill throughout the Signator’s spines.
Simon eventually got a hold of his thoughts one more time, even if he was still frozen from fear.
(What does that mean? "Don’t free me?" We have to save Silas and Faye, but what will happen if we kill that entity? Will it free something? No, more importantly, was that even the entity? What are we not supposed to free?!)
His mind went rampant, and his body was moving before he realized it. Alina didn’t ask questions; she simply followed.
The thought of why Simon had chosen to keep going had not reappeared in his mind yet, but he could not stop now.
He looked through the eyes of Roro, trying to catch a glimpse of what would be ahead of him. From a bird’s-eye view, he could see behind Silas and Faye that the ground began to fracture.
Behind those cracks in the stone, the entity stood there, levitating. It never took a step, simply teleporting to advance.
It had no face, and stood like its neck was broken. It was permanently hanging, staring down at the floor like it was the most amusing sight.
With every meter it crossed, the buildings behind it were turned into ash.
And then, it called out again:
"Have you no need for survival? Advance faster, I beg. Lower your weapons."
Faye was confused, keeping her scythe hooked onto her shoulder.
"Do you think it’s helping us?" she asked Silas.
"How would I know?"
Hearing the sarcastic reply from Silas, she rolled her eyes. She deactivated her Signature before running as fast as her slender body allowed her.
"Not the time!"
Each breath they took felt like a trace of oxygen wasted that could have gone to their legs. For the rest of this time, Faye kept mumbling to herself.
"Don’t look back. Don’t look back. Don’t look back."
Unfortunately for Roro, who was also thinking this, Simon forced him to do so. His vision was heavily blurred due to the fact that the ashes from the buildings covered the crimson skies.
But it wasn’t as if Simon cared for this. Even if it had all the characteristics of a bird, it was still a machine.
Thus, he told the machine to do its job whether it liked it or not. That is, if you could call force and speaking the same thing.
After only five more seconds, Simon could no longer spot the entity throughout the fog. He focused on studying this ash instead, hoping it would give him some clue about what was happening.
However, it only seemed to make him more confused. The ash would not simply fall down to the earth. It would rise to the skies, creating a spiral in the clouds, and freeze.
After it was large enough to get to the same size as a building, it would fall.
(I see. It’s manipulating the ash to make sure Roro can’t see it.) Simon was quick to guess.
This wasn’t the only effect the ash had, however. With every speck, Roro could feel his wings becoming heavier, causing him to fly faster to escape from them.
If not, he would plummet to the ground and break in an instant. Simon had no choice but to force Roro back into his core to not damage him, leaving Silas and Faye alone for now.
He and Alina were only a few miles away by now, so it was their best shot at survival.
Not only this, but Simon would not dare to lose control of something he had just obtained. Everything he did was for his sake, whether he liked to admit it or not.
They marched forth, closing the distance between the four of them.
"Alina, deactivate your Signature. We can make it from here."
"I know that’s not why you’re telling me to do so, Simon. You don’t have to lie to me."
Of course, how could Simon forget? She understood how his brain worked, and they both knew that the entity acted based on spiritual presence.
However, this did not stop her from listening to him. Alina knew that this was, overall, the smarter choice and that she had no reason not to listen.
With all signs of spiritual presence now diminished, Simon hoped that the entity would no longer track them.
This would be the best-case scenario, not only because it would put them out of danger, but also because they would learn the pattern from this.
If the entity left now, it would allow them to try to run to the next duo before the entity had reached at least half of the length.
Simon knew this and ran faster until Silas came into his vision. Then, the voice called out one last time.
"Did I not tell you to run?"
