What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company?-Chapter 823: Boarding the Freighter
"Good luck, Miss Tera," The defense team leader saluted me before shutting off the call.
I pushed the thruster lever forward and my ship started moving towards the freighter in the distance.
Following behind me was the Iridescence acting as my backup in case the freighter was a trap.
I also kept my guns trained on the ship just in case the freighter reveals hidden weapons or something and attacks us.
On the way there, I tried to contact the freighter to see if there was any response coming from the freighter but there was still no response.
It wasn’t like my hails wasn’t connecting either, it’s just that nobody was answering my calls.
I connected a call with my girls on the Iridescence, the screen popping up to show the interior of the bridge.
"So... What should we do with this?" I asked.
Amber shrugged, "I suppose the obvious next step is to board it?"
That was what I was thinking as well...
"I’ll dock with it and check it out, you girls stay with the ship and provide fire support in case insurgent ships jump into the system."
Lea turned to give me a look of concern, "Are you sure, Mistress? Shouldn’t we go together instead?"
I waved at her, "I’ll be fine. Yumiko is also with me so I’m not alone. I’ll also use my Psionic powers if I have to."
The girls seemed to be satisfied with that and we proceeded with that plan.
I flew my ship over to the freighter and began the automatic docking sequence while I left the cockpit with Yumiko to head over to the docking hatch.
I did a quick equipment check as I loaded my shotgun shells while Yumiko did the same with her swords.
A hiss came from the docking hatch as my ship docked with the freighter, the locking mechanism attaching my ship with the freighter.
The door then cycled open and I brought my gun up, ready to shoot if there was any enemy behind the door.
What I got however, was a completely dark and empty corridor behind it.
The lights were not even turned on and the place was completely silent aside from the soft groaning coming from the metal of the ship.
Before this, I already did a scan of the ship and the life support systems were still online so the power generators should be working... So why are the lights turned off?
Looking at the lights, they don’t seem to be broken so it’s definitely a case of someone turning it off instead of it being broken.
I turned on the flashlight on my Codex and started scanning around the darkness, finding it to be as empty as I thought it was.
"Gravity systems is also working as well... Only the lights have been turned off," Yumiko muttered, her swords already drawn.
I scanned around the corridor to make sure there wasn’t anybody hiding to ambush us, "Any reason why this is the case?"
"Perhaps it was sabotaged?" She suggested.
"Hmm... Shall we go in?"
"If Mistress wishes to... But where should we go?"
"I suppose we should look for the crew. The first thing is to get the lights back on I guess?"
"I’m right behind you, Mistress."
I lead the way into the ship, the docking hatch cycling closed behind me and locking itself, making sure we don’t need to worry about someone sneaking into our ship and flying off with it.
The corridor stretched towards the left and right and judging by the position of the docking hatch from the outside, the front of the ship was to our right while the engines were towards the left.
If we consider the normal layout for these types of ships... The power generators should be towards the back of the ship so I guess we should head there to check if anything is wrong with the lights.
Maybe the power got damaged which caused the lights to be shut off? If that’s the case, I would like to know ahead of time in case the life support systems end up getting shut off next.
I should be fine since I’m not a Psionic but Yumiko would definitely be in trouble if that happened.
Before heading any deeper, I used my Codex to connect a call to the Iridescence, giving my girls a view of where we were and a means to communicate with us if needed.
We continued forward and the light from my Codex and Yumiko’s personal terminal were the only sources of light in the darkness that surrounded us.
Our footsteps echoed around the otherwise silent corridor and we both kept an eye out for any signs of the crew or enemies.
Despite us walking for a while, we did not find a single living being in the dark corridor.
There was also no signs of a battle around as the corridor looked clean and immaculate, so I doubt that this ship was boarded.
I was just thinking about asking if this was a ghost ship when the sound of a pained groan came from around the corner of a T-junction up ahead.
I looked at Yumiko to make sure I wasn’t hearing things and she gave me a nod to show that she heard it as well.
We crept closer towards the junction while also pressing ourselves against the wall, moving as silently as possible as we approached the bend.
I stopped right as I was beside it and sucked in a breath before leaning towards the bend to peek around the corner.
The corridor was also completely dark with not even an iota of light so I couldn’t see anything that might be making that noise.
Deciding to take the risk, I slid out from behind the corner and pointed my gun down the path as my Codex illuminated the corridor.
There, slumped down on the floor a few feet away was a man that was laid down on his stomach.
I quickly shone the light around the corridor, trying to see if there might be any signs of struggle around or at least something that might tell me what happened here.
But aside from the guy laying on the ground, there was nothing else around that might have suggested anything happened here.
And yes, I also checked the ceiling to make sure there was nothing there as well.
I then turned to Yumiko and gestured at the person on the ground, indicating that we should approach him.
She nodded and raised her swords, indicating that she would watch my back for me.
I advanced slowly, keeping my gun trained on the guy and my finger on the trigger. At the same time, I was also keeping a lookout for anything else that might jump at us from the shadows but nothing happened.
The man on the ground let out another pained groan and I lifted my foot to nudge the guy with my toe.
Aside from the groan, there was no other response.
I lowered my weapon and knelt down to flip him on his back, the guy flopping over without much struggle revealing a large gash across the front of his chest.
Curiously... For a wound this size, there was not a lot of blood on the ground.
I slapped the guy a few times on the cheek, "Hey. Hey. You awake?"
The guy let out another groan but it doesn’t seem like he’s waking up soon.
I did my best to use his own clothes to tie a makeshift bandage around his chest to cover up the wound but that was all I could do for now.
If I had known, I would have brought that foam thing that can seal up wounds with me...
I then went ahead to look for any sort of identification on him before I found his personal terminal.
Using his own biometrics to unlock it, I went through his logs and messages to see if there was anything of note while Yumiko kept watch.
Unfortunately, this guy doesn’t seem to be really sociable but I at least found his identification that listed him as a crew member of this ship.
The only problem was that the ship was unregistered, meaning it was not officially registered to an owner which either means this ship was stolen... Or it is being used for illegal activities.
Still, if he is part of the crew, I can assume that something happened to the rest of the crew as well and if the gash is anything to go by... Someone or something had attacked this ship.
And given the fact that there was barely any signs of struggle, whatever that attacked the crew is either really fast or really sneaky... Or both.
I straightened myself and nodded at Yumiko, "What do you think?"
Yumiko shook her head, "Too soon to tell... But we should be careful, nevertheless. If I had to guess, these people are smugglers and maybe there was a fallout amongst the crew members that resulted in this."
Hmm... I guess that’s possible too... Guess we’ll also have to be careful of the crew as well then...
