Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 182: Agreeing to Marry
Spencer Sawyer drove away from the postnatal care center, cruising aimlessly through the streets. His mind was a tangled mess. He had no direction, no idea where to go.
Finally, he made up his mind.
Wren Sutton’s refusal to help him proved she had no romantic feelings for him whatsoever. ’Even without Stella Sinclair, she’d probably never accept me.’
’Since that’s the case, if I can’t marry the woman I love and spend the rest of my life with her, then what difference does it make who I marry?’
Having reached a decision, Spencer Sawyer let out a breath. He was done wrestling with it. He made a U-turn at the upcoming intersection and headed for the hospital.
As he pushed open the door to the hospital room, the smell of disinfectant hit him.
Mr. Sawyer was propped up in the hospital bed while Mrs. Sawyer peeled an apple. The two of them were chatting idly.
"Dad, Mom," Spencer Sawyer said as he walked in.
A smile blossomed on Mrs. Sawyer’s face when she saw her son, but Mr. Sawyer’s expression immediately hardened. He was like a different person from a moment ago.
"Who told you to come in? Get out!"
Mrs. Sawyer immediately saw through his tough act. "Oh, cut it out. Weren’t you the one just going on and on about your son?"
Mr. Sawyer denied it, his expression unruffled. "You misheard. I wasn’t talking about him. Besides, it’s not like he cares about me as his father. He’s no son of mine."
Mrs. Sawyer nearly rolled her eyes.
"That’s enough out of you. You’re getting more and more ridiculous. If Spencer isn’t your son, are you implying I had him with another man?"
"Impossible," Mr. Sawyer denied anxiously.
"From the day we got married to now, neither of us has ever wavered. We’ve never betrayed each other."
Mrs. Sawyer cut a slice of apple and handed it to him. "See? You know that perfectly well deep down. You’re just saying these things to be difficult."
Mr. Sawyer ate the apple in silence, stealing a glance at Spencer out of the corner of his eye.
Spencer Sawyer walked up to the bed. "Dad, I need to tell you what’s on my mind."
Mr. Sawyer gestured for him to sit, then pointed to the expensive supplements on the table.
"Your Aunt Dawson and Stella Sinclair were here just now. They brought some supplements."
Spencer averted his gaze. "I know they came. I was at the door, but I didn’t come in."
Mr. Sawyer frowned. "Why not?"
Spencer replied, "I went to get some air."
Mr. Sawyer: "..."
Spencer took a deep breath, deciding not to put it off any longer. "Dad, I don’t like Stella Sinclair. I have no feelings for her."
"But you want me to be with her, and when I refused, you got so angry you ended up in the hospital."
"You and Mom gave me life and raised me. I can’t disregard your health, and I can’t ignore Mom’s feelings."
"So, I accept the arranged marriage. I’ll marry Stella Sinclair."
Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer stared at each other in astonishment, not expecting their son to capitulate so bluntly.
"Spencer, are you serious?"
"Mom, I’m serious. But I have conditions."
"What conditions?"
Spencer got straight to the point. He had planned this all out on the drive to the hospital.
"First, Stella Sinclair and I will only get legally married. No wedding ceremony.
Second, we keep the marriage a secret. No public announcements.
Third, no children for the first three years. And after we’re married, we won’t live at the main family residence."
"Are you negotiating a business deal or a marriage?" Mr. Sawyer spoke, his voice low and laced with displeasure.
A bitter smile touched Spencer’s lips. "Isn’t that what this is? A business deal? Trading my happiness for the mutual benefit of our two families."
"You...!" Mr. Sawyer was on the verge of losing his temper again.
Mrs. Sawyer quickly interjected to smooth things over. "Spencer, please don’t think that way. You have to cultivate feelings in a marriage. Your father and I, back in the day, we also..."
"Times have changed, Mom." Spencer cut her off. "This is my bottom line. Agree to my terms, and I’ll marry Stella Sinclair. Disagree, and I’ll leave the country tomorrow and never return."
His words hung in the air of the hospital room. Spencer watched his parents exchange a complex look.
They knew their son. He was a man of his word.
"Fine. We agree."
After a long pause, Mr. Sawyer finally heaved a sigh, reluctantly accepting his son’s terms.
"But you have to promise us that you’ll take this marriage seriously and give Stella Sinclair a chance."
Spencer nodded, but he felt no sense of victory.
He knew this was only the beginning of the deal.
Mrs. Sawyer felt both heartache and relief, but she didn’t say anything.
In a family like theirs, marriage was never a matter of personal choice.
