Chapter 181: Chapter 181: I Can’t Help You With This

Spencer Sawyer fell silent, finding it hard to speak.

He knew how offensive his impending request was.

Wren Sutton was still recovering from childbirth, her body weak, and she was also shouldering the immense trauma of Adrian Lancaster’s plane crash.

Yet here he was, about to take advantage of her vulnerable state with a selfish request. It was tantamount to rubbing salt in her unhealed wounds.

’He really couldn’t bear to do it.’

But he couldn’t think of any other way. He had to harden his heart and try.

"Spencer, what’s wrong? Why aren’t you saying anything?" Wren Sutton asked, her heart pounding with anxiety.

Spencer Sawyer closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and stopped hesitating.

"I do need you to do me a favor, and you’re the only one who can help. It’s... to marry me."

Wren Sutton froze, the expression on her face solidifying. She thought she must have misheard, and a look of immense shock and confusion flashed in her eyes.

"Spencer, you..."

Spencer Sawyer, feeling tense, hurriedly added, "It would just be a marriage in name only—a marriage certificate to make my parents and Stella Sinclair’s family give up for good. A year at most. Once things blow over, we’ll get a divorce."

As he explained, he carefully chose every word, trying to make the absurd request sound less hurtful.

"Stella Sinclair?"

Wren Sutton had no idea what was going on. Her mind was filled with questions.

"Who is she? Why do you need to make her and her mother give up? Spencer, what on earth is going on?"

Spencer Sawyer explained succinctly, "My parents arranged a marriage for me with Stella Sinclair. I refused, and my dad got so angry he ended up in the hospital. After he woke up, his stance became even more resolute. The matter of our two families joining in marriage is completely non-negotiable."

’So that was it.’

Wren Sutton understood.

"Spencer, I understand your situation, but a fake marriage is still a lie."

She spoke slowly, her voice carrying the distinct weakness of someone who had recently given birth, yet it was exceptionally clear and firm.

"I don’t want to deceive your parents, and I don’t want to deceive anyone."

"So, Spencer, I’m sorry. I can’t help you with this." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Spencer Sawyer was mentally prepared. He had guessed this would be the outcome.

He wasn’t angry, nor did he resent Wren Sutton. Instead, he felt a sense of relief.

If Wren Sutton had actually agreed, he wouldn’t have known how to face her in the future. Living every day with guilt and self-reproach would have been agonizing.

"You don’t need to apologize. I respect your choice. I was the one who was too forward and inconsiderate. I’m the one who should be sorry."

Wren Sutton didn’t blame Spencer Sawyer either.

’People can’t be rational and clear-headed all the time. Everyone has moments of confusion.’

’If he hadn’t been backed into a corner, Spencer would never have had the audacity to make such a request.’

"I’m a mother of two now. The father of my children was in a plane crash, and there’s been no news since. I have to protect myself."

Wren Sutton frankly expressed the worries on her mind.

"A fake marriage would undoubtedly attract unnecessary trouble, maybe even retaliation from certain people. If something were to happen to me, what would become of my children? I can’t let my children lose their mother after already losing their father."

She paused for a moment, her voice growing even more resolute. "All of my energy and attention is on my children right now. I don’t want to create trouble for myself, and I don’t want to deceive anyone."

"I’m telling you this in the hope that you can understand my position, Spencer."

A child is a mother’s greatest vulnerability, and also her bottom line.

"Spencer, what you need right now is a real relationship, not a sham. I’m sure you’ll find someone who is truly right for you."

Spencer Sawyer felt as if a great weight had been lifted. He looked up at the familiar silhouette in the window, a slight curve forming on his lips.

"Wren Sutton, you’re the most sincere person I’ve ever met. I suddenly understand why the Lancaster family insists it has to be you. Even without Adrian Lancaster, they still treat you like true family. It’s all because of your character."

After saying this, he hung up the phone and drove away, seemingly having made some kind of decision. No one knew what he was going to do next.

Wren Sutton let out a long breath, put her phone away, and turned to walk over to the crib.

Looking at the two little ones sleeping soundly, her heart melted completely, and her eyes curved into a doting smile.

"My darlings, Mommy promises you, I will always protect you and never put myself in danger."
