Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 123: To Save Him, She Almost Lost Her Life
Adrian Lancaster left the hospital room with Mr. Marshall, and they went down to the small garden behind the inpatient wing.
They walked side by side, each lost in their own thoughts.
Mr. Marshall broke the silence.
"Adrian, you’ve seen Maya’s condition. She’s lost a leg. I can’t tell you how much it pains me. I wish it were me who had to be amputated, not my only daughter."
Adrian felt just as terrible.
Maya Marshall wasn’t like other women to him.
She wasn’t just his first love; she had also saved his life once when they were children. She had nearly died saving him.
Four years ago, if his grandmother hadn’t threatened to kill herself, the person he would have married was always Maya Marshall.
But fate had a cruel sense of humor, and he ended up marrying Wren Sutton.
"I understand how you feel."
Mr. Marshall sighed, his face clouded with sorrow.
"Since it’s come to this, I won’t beat around the bush. Maya’s life has been tragically altered, and she’s in this state entirely because of your wife, Wren Sutton. She bears an undeniable responsibility."
"Wren Sutton is the one who did this to my daughter. As her father, I will see this through to the end."
"Adrian, that’s not unreasonable of me, is it?"
"No," Adrian replied, his voice low and his expression grim.
But in the next second, his tone shifted. "However, the matter is still under investigation. Wren is only a suspect at this point."
Mr. Marshall’s expression didn’t change. "But Wren is the *only* suspect. If there had been a third person present, I wouldn’t be so certain she was the one who pushed Maya. What’s more, there’s surveillance footage to prove it. Wren Sutton is the culprit."
He emphasized the last sentence, his voice laced with a seething, teeth-grinding hatred.
"We live in a society governed by law. She won’t escape punishment."
Adrian’s jaw tightened. He was trapped in a difficult, passive position, his expression dark and unreadable.
He desperately wanted to protect Wren Sutton, but all the evidence pointed directly at her.
The Marshall Family had pressed charges, and the police department had already opened a case. She could be summoned at any moment.
If the evidence was confirmed, she would certainly face imprisonment.
Unless... unless the Marshall Family dropped the case, ceased pursuing the matter, and accepted a private settlement.
When Adrian still hadn’t responded, Mr. Marshall took a breath and repeated what he had told Theodore Lancaster on the phone—that this was about the incident, not the people involved.
Adrian frowned at his words. "Wren Sutton and I are not divorced. She is still a member of the Lancaster family. Her affairs can’t possibly be unrelated to the Lancasters."
"Then get a divorce," Mr. Marshall blurted out.
"Once you’re divorced, her business will have nothing to do with the Lancaster family, and your family won’t be implicated."
It dawned on Adrian that he seemed to have walked into a trap. Annoyed, his tone grew cold. "Is this what you wanted to discuss with me?"
"That’s right." Mr. Marshall didn’t deny it, speaking earnestly. "Ultimately, I’m doing this for your own good. Once Wren Sutton is convicted, the Lancaster family will be utterly disgraced. It could even affect The Rhodes Group."
Adrian turned to look into the distance, his voice firm. "I’m not getting a divorce."
Seeing how stubborn he was, Mr. Marshall became furious.
"From the sound of it, you want to protect Wren Sutton?"
Adrian took the opportunity to test the waters. "Name your terms."
Mr. Marshall let out an angry, booming snort and pointed at Adrian.
"You are such a disappointment! Maya has been reduced to this, and you’re actually asking me to name my terms to forgive Wren Sutton? How can you even say something like that? Do you think you’re worthy of my daughter? Don’t forget, you still owe her your life."
Adrian hadn’t forgotten. "I will never forget that Maya saved my life."
"If you haven’t forgotten, then you shouldn’t be shielding Wren Sutton. You stay here and think about that."
With that, Mr. Marshall flung his hands in dismissal and stormed off. He returned to the hospital room, fuming, and immediately started cursing.
"Adrian Lancaster is a heartless bastard!"
Mrs. Marshall gestured with her eyes for him to lower his voice, warning him that the walls had ears.
Mr. Marshall was too incensed to calm down.
"Let them hear! You think I’m afraid of him?"
Mrs. Marshall went over and pulled him into the inner room.
"What did you two talk about? Why are you so angry?" 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
"I suggested Adrian divorce Wren Sutton, and he actually said no! He even told me to name my terms for a private settlement. How could I not be furious?"
"Name his terms..." Mrs. Marshall frowned, lost in thought.
"When you get down to it, he just can’t bear to part with Wren Sutton." The more Mr. Marshall thought about it, the angrier he became, feeling that his daughter’s years of devotion had been a complete waste.
’So many excellent men were lining up to be the Marshall Family’s son-in-law, and my daughter rejected them all. Now that she’s lost a leg, those men will surely all run for the hills.’
’Wren Sutton crippled my daughter, and Adrian Lancaster ruined her life’s happiness. That couple is a pair of vicious predators!’
Just then, a glint flashed in Mrs. Marshall’s eyes, radiating a fanatical obsession.
"This is Maya’s chance."
Mr. Marshall was confused. "What are you talking about?"
"Tell Adrian Lancaster that if he wants to protect Wren Sutton, his condition is to marry Maya."
It hit Mr. Marshall like a bolt of lightning.
’How could I have been so stupid downstairs and not thought of that?’
The more Mrs. Marshall thought about it, the more excited she became. "Once Maya becomes Mrs. Lancaster, Wren Sutton will be kicked out by the Lancaster family. Without their protection, dealing with her will be as easy as flipping a hand. It might not even be impossible to have her secretly killed then."
...
Wren Sutton took Zoey from Isla Griffith’s house and returned to Amberwood Estates.
Although Zoey didn’t know what had happened, she could sense that Wren Sutton had been gloomy and listless since last night.
The little girl offered her most cherished doll to Wren Sutton. "Don’t be sad."
Wren Sutton forced a relaxed, knowing smile. "I’m fine, don’t worry."
Zoey pressed her lips together and nodded firmly. She then magically produced a chocolate candy and placed it in Wren Sutton’s palm.
"Where did you get this chocolate?"
"Aunt Isla gave it to me."
Wren Sutton stroked Zoey’s head. "You should keep it for yourself."
"Eating chocolate makes you feel better."
Wren’s heart warmed, and she couldn’t bear to spoil the moment. "Alright, I’ll eat it."
Just after she finished the chocolate, a call came from the police department, summoning Wren Sutton.
"Wren Sutton, you need to come down to the police station right now."
