Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 124: The Marshall Family is So Despicable
Wren Sutton hung up the phone, pressing her fingers to her forehead as she sank into a brief, uneasy silence.
She was a suspect, facing summons at any moment. Once they had "irrefutable proof," the authorities would arrest her immediately.
Zoey tugged on Wren Sutton’s hand. Her big, dark eyes gazed up at her, filled with worry.
The little girl had a feeling something bad was about to happen, but she couldn’t guess what it was.
Wren Sutton steadied herself, careful not to show her anxiety in front of the child.
"I have to go out for a bit, and I can’t take you with me. You be a good girl and stay home, okay? I’ll call Aunt Isla in a little while and ask her to come keep you company."
Zoey nodded obediently. "Okay."
"That’s my good girl."
When Isla Griffith received Wren Sutton’s call for help, she immediately agreed to go to Amberwood Estates to look after Zoey.
"You just gave your statement yesterday. You told them everything you were supposed to. Why are they summoning you again today?"
"I’m guessing the Marshall family is putting on the pressure."
Isla Griffith agreed. "The real thief crying ’stop thief.’ Turning around and biting you back. The Marshalls are truly despicable."
Wren Sutton was left with no choice; she had to go.
"Will looking after Zoey affect your work?"
"Not at all. My schedule is wide open lately. My agent is busy promoting some new talent and can’t be bothered with me."
"Isla, thank you," Wren Sutton said gratefully.
She was so lucky to have her best friend’s help. Otherwise, she would have been at a total loss over who to leave Zoey with.
"Why be so formal with me? You go do what you need to do. I’ll get my things and head right over."
"Okay."
After making arrangements for Zoey and giving her another round of instructions before leaving, Wren watched as Zoey, who had committed everything to memory, waved a reluctant goodbye.
DING. The elevator reached the first floor.
Wren Sutton stepped out and came face-to-face with Spencer Sawyer.
After a moment of surprise, they greeted each other.
Upon learning that Wren Sutton had been summoned by the police, Spencer Sawyer almost asked, ’Why isn’t your husband going with you?’
’Then again,’ he thought, ’they have a child at home. If they both left, there’d be no one to look after her.’
"You just gave your statement yesterday, and now you have to go again."
Wren Sutton nodded helplessly. "I just got the call. They told me to come in."
Spencer Sawyer frowned almost imperceptibly, uneasy about her going to the police station alone.
"What a coincidence. I was just about to head over that way for something today. We can go together; it’s on my way."
Wren Sutton politely declined. "Spencer, you don’t have to go to the trouble of coming with me."
"It’s on my way. Let’s go." Spencer Sawyer’s tone was gentle but firm.
Wren Sutton was speechless.
Watching Spencer Sawyer walk ahead of her, she found she couldn’t stop him.
A few minutes later, two cars drove out of Amberwood Estates, one after the other.
At the same time, a luxury car entered the complex, brushing past Wren Sutton’s vehicle.
Preoccupied, Wren Sutton didn’t notice the other car.
But the man in the luxury car saw her clearly.
This was the second time Sean Sterling had seen Wren Sutton at Amberwood Estates, and both times had been at the entrance.
He remembered she had said last time that she had a friend living in this complex—a friend who wasn’t her best friend, Isla Griffith.
"What are you looking at?" A saccharine female voice interrupted the man’s thoughts.
Sean Sterling withdrew his gaze. "Just saw someone I know."
The woman, clinging to his arm, asked curiously, "Who was it?"
"You wouldn’t know them."
The woman whined coquettishly. "If you tell me, then I’ll know them! We all live in the same complex, after all."
Sean Sterling wasn’t falling for it. "You and her don’t run in the same circles."
The woman, feeling rebuffed, tactfully dropped the subject and immediately changed it. "Can you come with me to the car show tomorrow? I want to get a new car. I’ve had my current one for a while now."
Sean Sterling didn’t have time. He pulled out a bank card and shoved it into the woman’s hand. "Go buy one yourself."
The woman was ecstatic. "President Sterling, you’re so good to me."
Sean Sterling’s expression was blank. He closed his eyes, and the image of another woman surfaced in his mind.
...
「The Police Station.」
Today, there was a new pair of interrogators. The two worked in tandem, trying to break through Wren Sutton’s psychological defenses and hoping she would confess voluntarily.
Wren Sutton was neither afraid nor did she have a guilty conscience.
"Every word I’ve said is true. Maya Marshall fell from the rockery on her own. I didn’t push her."
"Wren Sutton, you’d better think carefully before you speak."
"I have thought very clearly."
"Confess and you’ll be treated with leniency; resist and you’ll be treated with severity. In the face of the surveillance footage, your defense seems rather weak."
"A chain of evidence includes more than just surveillance footage. Convicting me based on a single video clip either means your investigative skills are terrible, or you’re under some kind of pressure to close this case quickly," Wren Sutton said bluntly, indignation welling up inside her.
The interrogators were silent.
They were at a stalemate for a long time.
Facing the interrogators’ pressure, Wren Sutton decided not to say anything more, meeting their questions with silence.
The interrogation made no headway.
Spencer Sawyer waited patiently in his car for over three hours. When Wren Sutton still hadn’t come out, he couldn’t sit still any longer. He immediately got out of the car and went to the case-handling area to ask about the situation.
The response he got was that Wren Sutton was still being interrogated and could not leave for the time being.
Spencer Sawyer had studied law on his own for a period, so he knew that this summons couldn’t legally last for more than twelve hours.
’That means she’ll definitely be out in another nine hours at most,’ he thought. ’But that doesn’t mean she can’t get out sooner.’
Spencer Sawyer tried to negotiate with the staff, using Wren Sutton’s health as a reason, hoping to take her home sooner.
His request was sternly rejected, and he was told to leave immediately.
Frustrated and angry, Spencer Sawyer returned to his car. Unwilling to just give up, he hesitated for a long moment before dialing his father’s number.
He really didn’t want to bother his father unless it was absolutely necessary.
The call connected.
"Dad, I need a favor. A friend of mine is in a bit of trouble."
...
Adrian Lancaster left the hospital and returned to their marital villa, only to find that Wren Sutton wasn’t home and one of the cars was missing from the garage.
His face darkened as he pulled out his phone and called her.
"Sorry, the number you have dialed is switched off."
Adrian Lancaster ripped off his tie in frustration. He hadn’t slept at all last night and had come back hoping to catch up on some sleep before having a serious talk with Wren Sutton. He never expected her to be out.
「A dozen or so minutes later.」
Adrian Lancaster emerged from the bathroom, his hair still damp, moisture clinging to his skin.
A towel was tied loosely around his waist, leaving his upper body bare, revealing his abs, V-lines, and overall spectacular physique.
Paired with his handsome face, he was the ideal lover in any woman’s eyes, no matter where he went.
Adrian Lancaster went downstairs to the kitchen, opened the refrigerator for a bottle of water, and called Wren Sutton again as he drank.
Still off!
Suppressing his temper, he reluctantly called Isla Griffith.
"Is Wren Sutton with you?"
"No."
"You’d better not be lying to me. I know where you live," Adrian Lancaster warned.
Isla Griffith scoffed. "What’s the point in lying to you? I don’t have time to play games with you."
Adrian Lancaster’s expression was cold. "If she’s not with you, where else could she be?"
"Now you remember to care about your wife? Where were you before?" 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
"Isla Griffith, don’t test my patience by dodging the question. I’m asking you now, where is Wren Sutton?" Adrian Lancaster snapped, his anger flaring.
Isla Griffith had only wanted to mock Adrian Lancaster for a moment; she never intended to actually hide the truth from him.
’Besides,’ she thought, ’if I want Wren to get out of the police station sooner, I’ll actually need his help.’
"She’s at the police station, being interrogated."
The color drained from Adrian Lancaster’s face. He hung up, ran upstairs to change, and then drove to the police station himself to get her.
