The look in Adrian’s eyes as he watched Wren was far from innocent. He’d been holding back since the moment he walked in. Her scent was magical, intoxicating him. He wanted to pull her into a tight embrace, to claim her as his own.

When no response came after a long moment, Adrian gently lifted Wren’s chin.

Under the cool moonlight, their eyes met, their bodies pressed tightly together.

The man’s voice was husky, sounding especially alluring in the silent night. "Mrs. Lancaster, is it such a difficult choice?"

Wren’s heart skipped a beat.

Mrs. Lancaster...

A title so intimate, yet so strange. She hadn’t heard it in such a long, long time. It felt like an echo from another life.

"Speak," Adrian said, rubbing Wren’s waist with a suggestive touch.

Wren pushed her thoughts aside. She doesn’t want to choose either option. She doesn’t want to be with Adrian Lancaster, and she especially doesn’t want to share a bed with him.

"It’s not a difficult choice."

"So, your answer is?"

Wren looked at Adrian, her gaze holding none of its former affection or desire to please, only cold indifference. "Go back by yourself."

The look in Adrian’s eyes turned icy in an instant. In disbelief, he tightened his grip. "Say that again."

Wren met the man’s deep, dark eyes. Even knowing he was obviously angry, she refused to back down. "I said, go back by yourself. I’m not leaving with you tonight, and you’re not welcome to spend the night at my house."

Adrian squeezed two words through his gritted teeth, "Your reason being?"

"There’s no reason. I just don’t want to."

"Wren, you’re asking for it." Adrian was so furious that he lost all restraint, the veins at his temples throbbing visibly. Lately, his wife had defied him time and again, disrespecting him and completely ignoring his words.

The jarring change was hard for him to accept.

She shouldn’t be like this!

She used to be so obedient!

What the hell went wrong?!

With nothing left to lose, Wren closed her eyes and lifted her chin. "Then just kill me now."

Seeing her nonchalant expression, Adrian finally snapped. He pinned her against the bedroom door, lowered his head, and crushed his mouth to hers in a punishingly deep kiss.

It’s painful! Wren Sutton’s eyes shot open, and she began to struggle in a panic.

Bastard! Who said he could kiss her? Besides, they were in her house, her parents’ bedroom just a wall away, yet he didn’t have the slightest bit of consideration.

Adrian’s gaze was dark and dangerous, enough to make one’s heart palpitate. He stared unblinkingly at Wren, refusing to miss a single, subtle change in her expression.

The more she struggled, the rougher his kiss became. He dominated her, stealing her breath, trying to force her to beg for mercy.

Whimpering sounds escaped the corners of Wren’s mouth. Afraid of waking her parents, she dared not cry out. She was a bundle of repressed agony, tears slowly filling her eyes.

At the peak of her anguish, she retaliated viciously, biting down hard on him. The metallic tang of blood filled their mouths instantly, staining both their lips crimson.

Frowning, Adrian instinctively let go of Wren.

They both struggled to catch their breath, their appearances disheveled from the struggle. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

"Wren Sutton, you’re ruthless," Adrian said, wiping the blood from his mouth.

Leaning against the door, Wren glared at the man before her. "This is nothing compared to you."

She didn’t notice two of her pajama buttons had come undone, revealing the pale column of her neck. The sight, combined with her feminine scent and the rise and fall of her chest, was utterly tantalizing.

A fresh wave of desire washed over Adrian. Right now, it was more than lust; it was a thirst for control. He had to make Wren submit to him. "Oh, really? Then let’s be a little more ruthless. Scream for me."

For a dazed moment, Wren didn’t understand. Before the frown could leave her face, Adrian pinned her again. He became a predator, his coiled restraint finally snapping.

RIP!

Adrian tore Wren’s pajamas open. His searing palm pressed flat over her heart as his kisses trailed from her neck, winding their way down. His reason collapsed in a storm of lust and fury.

"Cry out, and I’ll let you go."

Realizing Adrian’s cruel game, tears of humiliation and grievance streamed down Wren’s face. She bit her lip, refusing to make a sound. She had underestimated his cruelty, forgotten that he was the kind of man who would do anything to get what he wanted.

He would do anything to make her surrender.

His hot kisses roamed freely while his palm traced the perfect curve of her waist and hips, leaving an intimate trail in its wake.

After four years of marriage, Adrian was intimately familiar with Wren’s body.

Under his relentless assault, Wren couldn’t hold out any longer. With red-rimmed eyes, she begged for mercy.

Hearing her fragile plea, Adrian kissed the tears from her face and pulled the torn fabric of her pajamas together, shielding her from view.

"So, what’s your answer now?"

Swallowing her humiliation, Wren was forced to choose. "I’ll go back with you," she choked out.

Satisfied, Adrian carried her back into the bedroom. He changed her clothes himself, then knelt down to put on her shoes.

Wren’s face was blank. She was like a soulless puppet, letting Adrian move her as he pleased.

"Why are your feet so cold?" Adrian frowned.

Wren replied, "They’re always cold."

Adrian held her pale, smooth feet in his hands, warming them before pulling on her socks.

Wren felt awkward. The soles of her feet tickled.

"I’ll do it myself."

Adrian grabbed her fidgeting ankle. "Stay still."

He put her shoes on with practiced ease.

It was the first time she’d ever been treated this way. He must do this for Maya Marshall all the time, she thought bitterly, that’s why he’s so good at it.’

"Walk on your own, or do I carry you?" Adrian asked.

"I’ll walk," Wren said. There was no way she was letting him carry her.

Adrian didn’t press the issue. He stood up and stepped aside.

After a few seconds of silence, Wren slowly got to her feet. Somehow, her legs and feet were numb. That, combined with her distraction, caused her to lose control of her body before she even took a step. She stumbled forward, falling straight into Adrian’s arms.

Adrian instinctively wrapped an arm around her waist and looked down at her. "This is you walking on your own?" His tone was mocking, laced with faint amusement.

Wren flushed, embarrassed. "My legs are numb. I lost my balance."

Adrian effortlessly scooped her up into his arms. "This is what happens when you’re stubborn."

Wren didn’t argue. She just wanted to get out the door as quickly as possible without waking her parents.

Adrian saw right through her and deliberately paused in front of her parents’ bedroom door. "You’re really not going to say anything to your parents?"

"No need!"

"So you’re ashamed to be seen with me?"

Wren was on the verge of exploding. "My parents are getting older, and they don’t sleep well. If they wake up, they’ll have trouble getting back to sleep. I’m begging you, can we please just leave?"

Looking at the fuming woman in his arms, Adrian’s mood surprisingly lifted. He strode away, carrying her.

Adrian had driven there himself. He placed Wren in the passenger seat and buckled her seatbelt for her.

After everything that had happened, Wren was completely exhausted. She leaned back in her seat, on the verge of sleep.

Adrian took off his jacket and draped it over her. "We’ll be home soon."

The luxury car sped through the darkness, becoming one with the night.

A few minutes later, the ringing of a cell phone shattered the silence.

Wren was startled awake. She opened her eyes to see the glowing screen displaying a name: Maya Marshall.

Adrian answered the call without the slightest hesitation.

"Why are you still up so late?"

His tone was low, gentle, and very patient.

Wren turned to look out the window, any trace of sleepiness now completely gone.

If only she had some earplugs.

"I miss you too much to sleep," Maya Marshall cooed.

Adrian spared a glance at the passenger seat from the corner of his eye. "Stop fooling around and get some sleep."

"I’m not. I really do miss you. What are you doing?"

"Driving. On my way home."

Maya Marshall murmured a soft, "Oh." A few seconds later, there was a sudden sound of what might have been a wooden cabinet toppling over, followed by her short scream.

Adrian instantly grew tense. "What’s wrong?"

There was no response.

"Maya, talk to me!"

The call disconnected.

A bad feeling washed over Adrian. He slammed on the brakes, pulling the car over to the side of the road.

"Something’s happened at Maya’s place. I have to go. Take a cab home yourself."
