Chapter 10: Approaching Her Lips Editor: Henyee Translations

Wren headed to her parents’ house in high spirits as the sun began to set. She had bought her mother’s favorite durian, her father’s favorite braised beef, and some other health supplements and fruits.

Like daughters everywhere, the first thing she did upon entering was call out, "Mom, I’m home!"

"Dad."

Her father was in the kitchen, wearing an apron and stir-frying vegetables, while her mother was sitting in the dining room, wrapping dumplings.

Hearing her voice, both of them dropped what they were doing and came to the door to welcome their daughter.

"My precious daughter is back! You bought so many things again. We haven’t even finished what you brought last time. Don’t buy anything next time you come."

"Where’s Adrian? Didn’t he come back with you?"

Wren slipped into her slippers and casually made up an excuse. "He’s busy at the office and couldn’t get away."

Mrs. Sutton said regretfully, "I prepared a whole feast. We haven’t all gotten together in so long. Your father was even planning on having a couple of drinks with him."

"I’ll have a drink with Dad."

When dinner started, Mrs. Sutton glanced at the time, still thinking about her son-in-law.

"Wren, why don’t you call Adrian and see if he’s done with work? It would be great if he could make it back for dinner."

Wren hadn’t told Adrian about her visit at all, nor did she want to. "There’s no need. The company has a cafeteria, so he won’t starve. Mom, I’m hungry. Can we just eat, please?"

The moment her daughter whined a little, the mother’s heart softened, and she immediately gave in. "Alright, alright, let’s eat. We won’t wait for anyone. We’ll all eat together next time we have the chance."

The family of three enjoyed a happy meal, chatting and laughing together.

After dinner, her father washed the dishes while Wren watched TV with her mother. The soft light shone on the mother and daughter, creating a warm and happy atmosphere.

"Mom, I’m not going back tonight. I’ll stay here." Wren was a bit tired and didn’t feel like making the trip back and forth.

"Oh, good!" Mrs. Sutton couldn’t be happier, but then a second thought gave her pause. "Does Adrian know?"

Wren shook her head. "I’ll text him later."

Whether she actually sends it or not is up to her, though. Adrian often stayed out all night and didn’t always text to let her know. So, it’s not like she’s obligated to report my every move to him.

Mrs. Sutton was a woman of experience. She’d been through a lot and could tell something was off. In the past, whenever her daughter came home, eight out of ten sentences she spoke would be about Adrian.

Today, she hadn’t mentioned him once. It’s too strange.

After a moment of silence, Mrs. Sutton asked tentatively, "Wren, are you and Adrian okay?"

"We’re fine," Wren said, forcing a lighthearted tone. "We’re doing great." She didn’t plan on telling her parents until she had the divorce certificate in hand, wanting to spare them the worry. "He really couldn’t come today because of work, not for any other reason. Mom, don’t overthink it."

Speak of the devil.

Just as Wren finished her explanation, a call came in from Adrian.

!!!

She had to answer the phone since her mother was right there, or the whole act would fall apart. Wren gritted her teeth and answered the phone. The next second, the corners of her lips curled up as she put on a masterful performance.

"Hello, honey. Are you done with work? Are you tired? Have you eaten?"

Adrian thought he had misheard. An eyebrow twitched. After just one afternoon, Wren seemed like a completely different person.

Why has she been so moody lately?

Still, he was secretly pleased. He liked this new attitude of hers.

"Where are you?" Adrian’s voice was low, impatient to see her.

"I’m at my mom’s. I was just about to call and tell you when your call came through. I’m not coming back tonight, so you should go home and get some rest. Don’t stay up late working."

"You..." Adrian couldn’t keep up with this sudden turn of events.

Wren put on a show. "Mhm, okay, I got it. Good night." With that, she hung up. The whole performance was flawless. "See, Mom? Now you can relax."

Mrs. Sutton gave her a kind, gentle smile and patted her daughter’s hand. "As long as you two are doing well, I have nothing to worry about."

Wren leaned against her mother and let out a long sigh of relief.

Finally got through that.

After watching two episodes of a TV drama, it was getting late, and Mr. and Mrs. Sutton went to their bedroom to sleep.

Wren put down her phone and went to take a shower. She had just changed into her pajamas and lay down on the bed when the doorbell rang.

Who could be visiting so late? Wren got up and walked out, puzzled and reluctant. When she reached the entrance and saw the person standing outside on the video doorbell, her eyes widened in shock.

It was Adrian Lancaster!

What is he doing here in the middle of the night?

Wren resisted the urge to open the door, but she was worried the continuous ringing would wake her parents.

"This is so annoying." Left with no choice, Wren opened the door. "It’s so late, you..."

Before she could finish, Wren’s vision darkened as a shadow fell over her, and a familiar, chilly scent washed over her.

The next second, an arm tightened around her waist, and she fell into a firm embrace.

Adrian stumbled back, pulling Wren with him. He pressed her against the wall, his hand tightening on her waist while his other supported her back.

They were pressed close, their upper bodies almost completely flush against each other.

Wren wasn’t wearing a bra, and being pressed against his hard chest was a little painful. As if on purpose, he shamelessly rubbed against her a couple of times.

She flushed with a mixture of shame and anger. Luckily, it was dark inside the unlit house, so he couldn’t see it.

Wren pushed hard against Adrian, hissing a warning, "This is my parents’ house! What is wrong with you? Let me go!"

With her soft, fragrant body in his arms and her naturally petulant tone, Adrian was loath to let go. "What are you afraid of? It’s not like I’m some random guy off the street."

With that, he lowered his head, moving closer to Wren until his lips were almost touching hers.

"Your husband is here to take you home."

The intimate, sappy gesture and tone made Wren’s skin crawl, and she struggled even harder. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

Just talk if you’re going to talk! Why do you have to be so close? It’s not like I’m deaf!

"Who wants to go home with you?"

"You called me ’honey’ on the phone. Wasn’t that a signal for me to come pick you up? I’d like to think I understand a woman’s intentions."

You don’t understand a damn thing! Wren cursed inwardly. "Of course not."

Adrian’s eyes darkened. He captured her flailing hands and held them firmly in his grasp. "Are you sure you’re not coming with me?"

Unable to pull her hands free, Wren angrily turned her face away, avoiding his heated breath. "I’m not going."

He gave an exasperated laugh at her resolute expression, which was as serious as a vow. "Don’t regret it."

Wren remained silent, her meaning obvious.

Adrian’s jaw slowly tightened, and a hint of disappointment flickered in his eyes. His face grim, he slowly released her and walked further into the house without another word.

Wren hurriedly called out to him, not daring to raise her voice too much. She pointed at the door. "The exit is here. Where are you going?"

With his back to her, Adrian said, "When did I say I was leaving?"

Wren’s mind went blank. "What do you mean?"

"I’m staying here tonight. In your bed." Adrian’s tone was as entitled as if he owned the place.

"Are you insane?!" Wren, aghast, went over, grabbed his arm, and tried to push him out. "My parents are asleep! Go home, now!"

But Adrian was a big man, and he had no intention of leaving. How could she possibly move him?

Wren was so frantic she could have stomped her feet. "Adrian Lancaster, stop messing around and go home!"

Adrian hooked an arm around the woman’s waist, once again pressing her into his embrace. In the moonlight, his eyes looked exceptionally deep, hiding something Wren couldn’t decipher. "So unwelcome, am I?"

"You said before that you would never spend the night at my parents’ house."

"I’ve changed my mind."

"You..."

Adrian lightly brushed the pad of his thumb over Wren’s red lips, his Adam’s apple bobbing. "Either you come back with me, or I stay the night here. Choose one."
