Chapter 71: Chapter 70: The Dark Magician (Part 1)

Eleanore returned to her room, only to find the same white bird standing in the balcony, with a letter tied on to its little legs. It is a letter from her brother. She rushed to get the sachet of food and poured it on the ground for the bird. She gently loosened the rope securing the letter, while the bird was busy eating.

She rolled open the letter,

"Dear, My Little Sister,

Everything went well. There were a few difficulties along the way. But do not worry, we dealt with them, and we won.

Elle, my dearest, I will be back soon."

It wasn’t a coded letter but rather a simple and easy to understand one. It meant, he had already left Koa and will be arriving in the next five days, if not less.

Two days ago,

Hael, after defeating the head of the savage army, was on his way to Koa’s room. While Laurent and Azriel followed him closely.

Everything was too easy after that. No more people of the savage army or the guards of Koa, to bother them. It was all so suspicious that for a while, Hael thought that Koa might have run away.

And he was not wrong. Koa was not in his heavily guarded room. Even his guards had disappeared.

Azriel felt guilty, for their plan failed so terribly because of him. Had he not told Kar about their ambush plan, they would have already assassinated Koa and would have been on their way home.

Seeing him lowering his head to the floor, Laurent walked over to him. He patted his shoulder and with an assuring smile, said, "Don’t worry we will find him for sure."

"But then we will reach home late, and the captain—" Azriel was about to start an argument, when Hael, who was inspecting the large, empty room, cut him off.

"Don’t worry, my sister can wait." He answered, as he turned to him, once he had verified no one was there. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

"What should we do next, Captain?" Laurent asked, as Azriel felt overwhelmed with emotions.

"We will find him. He must have not gotten that far. Find any hidden passages in the room." He ordered, but before the two generals could oblige to their captain’s order, a short, fat man crawled out from the shadows.

"There is no need." He says, revealing his face. "For I am right here. Waiting for your arrival." The old man, Koa, smiled as he snapped his finger and one of his guards brought out a luxurious chair for him to sit in.

The three intruders were stunned to find the person who was supposed to run away, sitting comfortably in the chair. As if he had something under his sleeves.

"You saved us trouble, Koa." Azriel spoke up.

"Ha! A fool like you, who blew up his own cover, has no right to speak in front of me." Koa snaps his finger again and suddenly out of nowhere a circle of fire emerges around the three.

’There was no sign of gasoline though. How did the fire lighted?’ Hael wondered.

The fire rose and the heat in the already hot room increased. Both sides had started to feel sweaty. Hael was pulled aback, he hated fire.

Among the many tragedies that took place in the life of two pillars of the kingdom, one was due to this same fire. After Hael had lost both his parents, another attack took place in Sinclair mansion. Eleanore, his sister’s room, started to burn in the middle of the night. It was on that day that she got asthma and her poor condition, made her want to leave the mansion.

She shifted to Lancaster mansion for two years until she even lost both her godmother and father. All of this had taken a troll on her mental health, slowly leading her into erasing the painful parts of her life.

"What is this?" Hael felt angry and annoyed by this little trick, crossing over this thin fire circle was a piece of cake for him.

"Let’s play a game." He says, with a sinister grin.

"What game?" Laurent, who was apparently the only smartest one among the two knuckleheads, one always getting overwhelmed by sympathy and one by emotions, asked.

"I have three best guards; you will fight them. If you step on the fire or get out of the circle, you die. If you manage to defeat our men, you win. Simple." Koa shrugged his shoulders as he explained the rules of his stupid, yet deadly game.

"What makes you think we will p-lay this stupid game?" Hael asked, unwilling to listen to him any longer. He couldn’t wait to pounce on his men and kill them all for good.

"Oh right. That. If you don’t play the game, I will blow off the whole city, except for this castle, of course." His rings in each finger shone as if trying to dominate them all. "Many innocent men will die."

Hael’s expression quickly changed from anger to disgust and rage. What else can you expect from a despicable man like him? He clenched his jaw.

"Oh! I missed out the most important detail. You all shall fight without your swords." He added, laughing like a foolish man. As if everything was a joke to him.

"What nonsense!" Azriel yelled.

"Eric!" Koa shouted out the name of a slender man, standing in the other corner of the room. Although thin and slender, he looked like an absolute devil, as a heinous smile spread across his face.

"Eric is a dark magic user. His ability is destruction. With my one order, he can blow up the whole city." Koa explains. "So? What do you think? Do you still want to resist, Duke Hael Sinclair?"

Hael gulped. He had heard about the existence of dark magicians from the west. Zhipher, where the king’s sister is rebelling against her own brother, is a Kingdom that has always had the magic users in the royal family. This dark magic user might be from there.

In comparison to the east, Yena has magic users all over the kingdom. This could even be from either of these kingdoms.

However, using dark magic is a sin in both the Kingdoms. If they find a dark magician lurking in the shadows of their kingdom, they are given an instant death sentence.

Hael throws his sword out of the fire circle, understanding the gravity of the situation. His gaze shifted back to that slender man, dressed in a butler’s attire. His smile vanished. As if expecting the duke to not follow the rules and that would give him the chance to unleash his demonic power.

"Captain. Magic is not real." Laurent comments.

"It is. The dark ones are the most powerful ones of them." Hael turned to Laurenta and Azriel. "Throw away your swords." He orders.

The two generals followed his order and threw away their swords. In the opposite direction of where Hael had thrown his.

"Good." Koa smiled, as he snapped his fingers again.

The three guards out of the four entered the circle.

On the other hand, Eric casts a spell summoning four headsmen to guard around the circle and kill those who step outside the circle.

They looked like spirits. Their faces covered under a long hood, each holding a long bardiche in one hand and its pole resting on the other arm, its sharp blade facing their hidden faces. A large amount of black smoke was coming out of their long black gown. They looked like death itself.

Their appearance had not only scared the white knights but also the enemy, who had never seen such beings in their complete lifetime.

The guards removed the scabbard from their sword and had chosen their respective opponents. However, before the battle could start, Eric interrupted them.

"Lord Koa. Let’s keep it fair." He says, "Ask your men to put away their weapons as well."

Koa looks at him for a while, before gesturing to his men to throw away their weapons. The guards obeyed and the battles started.

The guards were on a whole different level from the men in the savage army and right now they were opting for hand-to-hand combat, instead of a swordplay.

Hael curled into a fist and was ready to strike the tall, bulky man in front of him. "I will kill you." He said, as he went for an attack, instead of waiting for one from his opponent.

The guard blocked it with his arms and punched him from the side. Hael felt a sharp pain in his gut, but he quickly shook it off and caught the other fist that was about to hit his face. He turned round with an attempt to break it but failed. He was instead picked up in the air and knocked to the harsh ground.

Severe pain rushed into his veins as he felt the slam of the floor maid of pure gold.
