Chapter 411: Interrupting the Little Ones’ Playfulness

Su Yijia was taken aback for a moment but soon understood. If Su Xinyue were to be paraded through the streets with a sign, she would surely feel immense satisfaction if someone threw rotten eggs, spoiled vegetables, or stones at her. If someone were to step in and protect her, that would only imply support for a ruffian and would make them equally culpable. This represented a fundamental misunderstanding of a wrong situation.

"Never mind; Grandpa and Grandma will be out soon anyway."

Su Yijia shook off her thoughts and reached for Qin Kaize’s large hand. When he felt her soft fingers touch his, he turned his hand and wrapped it around hers. It was already past nine o’clock, deep in winter. There weren’t any pedestrians on the road; not even a shadow could be seen. Su Yijia felt the warmth of Qin Kaize’s hand. Even in the cold air, she didn’t feel a hint of chill.

"I’ll carry you."

Suddenly, Qin Kaize bent down, inviting her to climb onto his back.

Su Yijia shook her head. "No need; I can walk by myself."

"Come on, hop on! I’m strong. I used to carry sandbags twice your weight during weight training." Qin Kaize urged, concerned for her well-being. They had taken an ox cart to get here, which took an hour and a half, and walking back would take at least two hours. The path was muddy and full of small stones. He knew that Su Yijia’s delicate feet wouldn’t hold up for long without hurting.

"Let’s walk a bit longer. I’ll let you carry me when I get tired."

Su Yijia tugged at Qin Kaize, wrapping her arms around his elbow and leaning against him.

Qin Kaize frowned, thinking that waiting until she was tired to carry her would probably make her feet sore, but he couldn’t bear to push her away. He decided to walk a bit longer with her.

However, it wasn’t long before Qin Kaize finally lifted Su Yijia onto his back. She nestled her cold little face against his neck, rubbing it lightly.

"Are you cold? I should have let you up sooner! When we get back, you need to take a hot shower."

Qin Kaize tightened his hold on her, feeling sorry for the little girl on his back. The strong winds and sand in the northwest were harsh, especially at night when the cold air was biting. Even though Qin Kaize’s pace was fast, it took him two and a half hours to get home with her on his back.

Once they arrived, he was busy boiling water and preparing food for Su Yijia while also tending to what needed to be harvested and planted in their space. All of this took until past midnight. Su Yijia had initially thought to take it easy today and just let him take one round of supplies, but as soon as she lay on the bed in the space, she fell into a deep sleep.

After Qin Kaize finished and took a shower, he warmed up and went to bed, pulling the sleeping girl into his arms. He kissed her forehead gently and fell asleep satisfied.

---

The next morning, just as the sun was rising, Qin Kaize left the house. Su Yijia woke up around eight or nine, still bleary-eyed. The house was empty, with only her left behind. Clearly, her grandparents had gone to the supply and marketing cooperative in the city to buy vegetables.

Su Yijia pulled out some fruits from the space, planning to say they were from someone selling at their door. She also took out some snacks she had won from a lottery, removing their packaging and placing them in a fruit plate. She prepared enough frozen injury ointment and Chinese medicine for Grandma Zhou’s treatment.

Just as she finished, Grandpa Lin and Grandma Lin returned.

"Jiajia, you’re awake! There are steamed buns in the pot. Have you eaten yet?" Grandma Lin asked.

"Not yet; I’m going to the kitchen now." Su Yijia reached out to take the bags from their hands but was refused by Grandma Lin.

Her grandparents hurriedly entered the kitchen with their big bags.

"You just wait outside; you don’t need to help with this little bit of work," Grandma Lin instructed. She swiftly lifted the lid of the steamer and placed three meat buns onto a plate.

"Make some malted milk for yourself; don’t eat dry food. When Ze left this morning, he filled the thermos with hot water."

She stuffed the items into Su Yijia’s hands and sent her out.

Watching her grandparents bustle around, Su Yijia couldn’t help but smile.

"Don’t worry; Kaize’s grandparents are quite easy to talk to."

"They’re your grandparents, aren’t they? How did they become grandpas and grandmas?"

"Qin Zongyao isn’t Kaize’s biological father; Uncle Xia grew up in the Xia family, so it’s normal to call them grandpa and grandma." Su Yijia explained. Moreover, she called her grandparents "grandpa" and "grandma," while Qin Kaize’s elders were "grandpas" and "grandmas," which made it easier to distinguish between them.

"So, does that mean your kids will take the Xia surname?" Grandma Lin suddenly realized this point.

Su Yijia immediately beamed with an overly bright smile. Grandpa and Grandma Lin exchanged glances, sensing that this girl was up to something again.

"Yes, we plan to have two. For the first one, we’ll let her draw lots to decide whether she takes the Xia or Lin surname. After the second, we’ll let him take the remaining surname."

This was the first time Su Yijia had shared her thoughts about her children’s surnames with them.

Grandma Lin and Grandpa Lin’s faces immediately turned dark.

"You child, that’s ridiculous." Grandma Lin angrily slapped Su Yijia’s arm.

Su Yijia looked innocent.

"Why is it ridiculous? Isn’t it normal for a child I carried for ten months and nursed through the tough days to have our surname? Besides, it wasn’t even my idea; it was Kaize who suggested it. His grandparents don’t mind, so why should we?"

Hearing this, Grandpa Lin helplessly shook his head. "Having two children with different surnames means every time someone asks, you’ll have to explain it. They might even feel divided."

"If they dare to feel divided, I’ll break their legs. It’s just a matter of explanation; it won’t kill them to say a few extra words."

Su Yijia replied nonchalantly.

Not giving Grandpa Lin and Grandma Lin the chance to lecture her, she turned and ran off with the buns in her hands.

They watched her go, shaking their heads helplessly, then couldn’t help but laugh.

Would they be happy if the child took their surname? That was needless to say.

Since Ze and his grandparents didn’t mind, as long as Comrade Weiguo didn’t care either, then they would let it be.

As for how the children would grow up, it would still be up to them, the elders, to teach well.

With Ze and Jiajia being so outstanding, their children would surely be raised exceptionally well.

Qin Kaize returned with Grandpa Xia and Grandma Zhou in the afternoon. As soon as they entered, Grandpa Lin and Grandma Lin immediately greeted them. The four of them exchanged warm greetings, and before long, tears began streaming down their faces as they expressed their joy at the reunion.
