Chapter 84: Unpredictable (2)

A cool breeze could be felt during the night as autumn nears, making the weather colder as days pass. The entire estate was still buzzing with people as the servants were hustling to prepare their masters’ luggage.

Under the dim light, Adrienne held a book as she read slowly while leaning on the couch. She read the passages in her textbook that Lennox highlighted yesterday for her to read and understand. She was so deep in a trance that she didn’t notice her tea had already turned cold.

Mother Wang closed the French doors of Adrienne’s room and glanced at her young miss. She observed the changes that had become more apparent in a short span of time. Her young miss had become a person she could barely recognize. Even now, the fact that Adrienne was reading was unusual. Her young miss used to hate studying, but now, Adrienne can be seen reading whenever she is home.

While Mother Wang was relieved that Adrienne wasn’t timid anymore, she couldn’t help but feel slight fear towards her young miss. Something about Adrienne was able to instill fear in her, though Mother Wang wasn’t sure of what it could be.

"The servants are busy packing the master’s belongings. I hope this will make the estate more peaceful moving forward.." She commented.

Adrienne hummed and flipped the page of the book she was reading.

"We’ll be busy plucking out the weeds they’ll leave behind." She said nonchalantly.

"Why would Miss worry about that? We have gardeners to tend to the gardens." Mother Wang frowned.

Adrienne stopped reading and lifted her gaze. "I was talking about the people Father would be leaving behind. I’m sure they’ll leave someone to keep an eye on me."

"Ohh..." Mother Wang hadn’t thought that far, but it made sense to her why Adrienne was wary of the servants.

"Hunter, please compile a list of the servants that will be left in the household. I don’t plan to keep disobedient dogs here. It’s better to eliminate them before they gang up against their master." As the words were spoken, a look of ruthlessness appeared on Adrienne’s face.

"You can leave this to me, Miss Addie..." Hunter replied. After living with Adrienne for some time, he understood how her mind worked. Most of the servants were loyal to her father and Aunt Camilla, and it wasn’t a far-fetched idea to suspect that they would try to harm Adrienne after this.

As long as Adrienne didn’t cross the line, Hunter was willing to do anything to keep her safe.

Meanwhile, a young woman was wrapping her arms around her mother and was pouting in the courtyard house where Ayla’s family was temporarily staying.

"Mother, how did Adrienne change overnight? She didn’t even spare me a glance last night. Everyone’s eyes were on her and they were praising her to the heavens." Ayla spoke with a tone that was unable to hide her anger. "Mr. Han’s attention was also set on her the entire night! How did she even manage to get his attention?"

She had loved Alistair Han for a long time. In her eyes, he was the most handsome and talented person, so how could she accept losing him to the stupid and ignorant Adrienne Jiang?

"Ayla, dear, calm down." Maryam Fang patted her daughter’s head lovingly. "Rest assured that she wouldn’t be able to marry Mr. Han. Adrienne Jiang is a stupid character and his grandmother despises her. In short, you need not take whatever Adrienne’s doing to heart as I will naturally handle this matter..."

"But she managed to chase Uncle Lewis and Aunt Camilla away. Doesn’t that mean she has gained some skills?" Ayla couldn’t help but feel worried. The memory of seeing Adrienne’s cold eyes was deeply embedded in her mind.

"Even if she’s gained some skills, would she be able to win? Adrienne is still young. There are many ways for your Aunt Camilla to make her life miserable." Maryam assured her daughter. This daughter of hers was gentle and talented. But though Ayla wasn’t stupid, she was a little too inexperienced when it comes to scheming.

It was most likely that she and her husband had doted on Ayla too much, thus she took everything at face value. However, Maryam knew that they would need to tread carefully around Adrienne now. Just look at how that little bitch managed to turn the tables to her advantage. Camilla was suffering a loss now because she underestimated her stepdaughter.

"Ayla, what do you think of Adrienne?" She asked curiously.

Ayla thought for a while and replied, "She’s becoming more arrogant these days and I heard her grades were also improving drastically. A teacher even claimed she’s a hidden genius in our batch, but I doubt that claim. How could a foolish girl like her be a genius?"

"Perhaps Adrienne has been pretending all this time." Maryam commented. "Addie spent most of her time beside her mother. It’s not really surprising for someone like her to excel in academics, given how smart and popular her mother was when she was younger. You have to be careful when dealing with Addie or else you might regret it in the end."

"Why does Mom say that?" Ayla was puzzled. She believed Adrienne’s luck would eventually run dry. She also couldn’t understand what Alistair Han saw in her foolish cousin.

"I don’t know... Just don’t take her lightly. Adrienne isn’t the same foolish cousin you knew."

Even Maryam couldn’t explain why she felt fear when looking at Adrienne. She had seen and met many people in the past, thus, Maryam knew how to read people. Others might not have seen it, but Adrienne had become smarter. Adrienne had started to distance herself from everyone and would conduct matters with meticulous thinking.

"If she’s getting smarter, you must double your efforts. The more outstanding you are, the more Adrienne would look stupid and foolish. You’re a clever child, Ayla, and you should understand Mom’s intention. You only need to shine brightly and leave the rest to me to deal with."
