Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 60: Hunter Nian (1)
The bell rang midafternoon, indicating that the class had officially ended. Adrienne had just tidied her desk when her phone vibrated from her pocket. She took it out and saw a message from her Uncle Reese, informing her that he was waiting for her outside the gates.
Her face lit up, and she immediately messaged Myrtle, informing her best friend of the plan change. After bidding goodbye to Valerie, Adrienne hurriedly rushed out of the school gates and saw her uncle leaning against a black sedan.
With the kind of face Reese Zhao had, how could he not get everyone’s attention? Many women and young girls blushed at the sight of him and wondered who he was waiting for. Some of her schoolmates’ faces turned ugly when they saw Adrienne approach him. However, when she called him uncle, they immediately understood this man’s identity.
"Uncle Reese, I wasn’t expecting you today. Is something the matter?" Adrienne said as she watched her uncle open the passenger seat door for her. Once seated inside, Reese closed the door and went to the driver’s seat. He turned on the car’s engine and drove away.
"I managed to bail out Hunter Nian but haven’t taken him out of the camp yet." He then glanced at his niece. "We’re meeting him today. Are you sure you want to employ that man as your bodyguard? You know I can provide a better person for the job. It wouldn’t be easy for you to tame that man."
Adrienne shook her head. Since she wasn’t sure if she could lure that uncle out, she didn’t have a choice but to bank her stakes on Hunter Nian instead.
"No, Uncle. It’s fine. I’m sure Mr. Nian would agree to my proposition. Even if I fail, it’s fine. I would still have other chances to convince him in the future."
Reese could only sigh and shake his head as he pressed the accelerator harder. It still baffled him how Adrienne knew Hunter Nian and why she was interested in him. He asked his people to investigate it, but they were certain that Adrienne and Hunter had yet to meet in the past. Hunter Nian had spent years inside the camp anyway and never received guests and had only gotten letters from his adopted mother.
It took an hour before they reached the camp where Hunter Nian was being held. The entrance of the premises was heavily guarded. Not only were there military personnel with rifles roving around, but the barricades were strict and heavy as well. There were also electric fences and cameras installed around the area. If it wasn’t for her Uncle Reese, Adrienne was sure she wouldn’t be able to enter this place easily.
After passing several security procedure, she and her Uncle Reese were led to the detention cell where Hunter Nian was held. Adrienne couldn’t hear anything but their footsteps as the place was too silent, even a drop of a needle could be heard. The walls were painted dull gray, but the floor was clean.
When they reached the end of the hallway, the security personnel accompanying them pulled out a set of keys and opened the heavily locked door. Another empty hallway was revealed, and Adrienne understood then that Hunter Nian’s reputation must be outstanding if the rest of the military had to lock him up with extra security like this.
There were only six detention cells in this area, and they walked until they reached the third one on the right. Adrienne and Reese found a man in his mid-twenties kneeling on the cold floor with his arms on his back. He had unruly black hair and a fair complexion. Adrienne couldn’t see his face, but she knew the man was aware of their presence, not acknowledging them.
"I’m not really sure why you’re helping him, Lt. Zhao, but I hope you’ll be able to discipline him. Hunter Nian’s abilities are outstanding and it would be a pity if we lose him. Major have been hoping to groom him to join the special elite troop, but it seems impossible with his current mental state." 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
Reese merely smiled. "I can’t promise you anything. Whether Hunter Nian decides to return to the service, it’s all up to him."
As they spoke, Adrienne quietly gazed at the man before them. This was her first meeting with Hunter Nian as she only knew him from the news she received in her past life. Whether the news could be trusted, only time will tell.
There was one thing she was certain of though. Hunter Nian had strong animosity toward the Ji family, the same family Elise Jiang had married into in her past life. The head of the family was a famous prosecutor in the country and he was the one who handled the murder case of Hunter Nian’s adoptive mother.
During Hunter Nian’s time in military school, his mother was murdered by a psychopath serial killer. All evidence pointed towards the suspect but because of some discrepancies, the suspect was only given a lighter sentence, when in fact it was expected for him to receive the capital punishment for all his crimes. Hunter Nian finished his studies as the cream of the crop of their batch, but it was overshadowed by the news of his mother’s murder.
As she looked at him, Adrienne couldn’t explain the peculiar and jittery feeling that rose in her heart. This was the first time she’d seen this person, so how could Hunter Nian manage to make her feel this way? She was lost in thought when her Uncle Reese suddenly told her.
"I’m not sure why you want to bail him out. It’s not like he would be kicked out of service. He is expected to receive proper punishment before he’s reinstated. I’ll give you a few minutes to talk, Addie, but be careful."
Hearing her name, the man inside the cell lifted his head, facing Adrienne. Adrienne held her breath as she looked at his face with astonishment. He seemed to emanate a kind of vicious aura.
"You’re Adrienne Jiang?" He suddenly asked.
"Yes. What of it?" She asked in return.
"So you found me..."
