Chapter 61: Hunter Nian (2)

Adrienne was startled. She couldn’t understand what Hunter Nian was saying. Did her Uncle Reese talk to him before their meeting? But why would Hunter Nian say she’d found him as if he was expecting her? She couldn’t fathom him at all. How could he possibly know who she was when they had never met before?

"What do you mean?" She asked, not breaking her gaze on the man before her.

"So you weren’t looking for me because you found out who I was?" Hunter questioned her impassively.

Adrienne furrowed her brow in confusion. She felt like Hunter knew something about her despite having met her the first time. She and Hunter Nian previously had no connections besides the Ji family. Many of the wrongdoings of the Jiang family committed were covered by the Ji family. The Jiang family, the Han family, and the Ji family... these three had effectively ruined her life, if she didn’t seek revenge on them, her rebirth would be worthless.

Unexpectedly, this man knew her for some reason. Adrienne doubted her Uncle Reese had already spoken with Hunter Nian before this meeting.

"So, who are you? How do you know who I am?" She coldly stared at Hunter Nian. It made Adrienne uncomfortable knowing she could not predict this man’s thoughts.

He merely laughed. "That’s for you to figure out, Miss Jiang. However, our fates have drastically changed since you sought me."

Adrienne had a sudden epiphany. What were the odds that she and Hunter Nian were the same? She knitted her brows tightly. She never expected she would be at a loss in this man’s presence. If this continued, Adrienne wouldn’t be able to take advantage of him.

Adrienne tightly clenched her fists on her sides. She thought that after experiencing a lifetime of torment, her temperament and heart had turned cold. Yet, when she saw Hunter Nian, she couldn’t help feeling this indescribable feeling toward him. She could sense some familiarity and warmth in the depths of this man’s eyes.

Hunter Nian had a bearing of a cultured man who experienced difficulties in life, just like her. His time in the military and the loss of his mother had cost him to lose his refined youth. He slowly stood up and moved closer, his gaze lowering as he towered over her.

"What do you need from me, Miss Jiang?"

Adrienne forced a smile as she regarded him.

"You and I have a mutual enemy, Mr. Nian. Would you like to join forces with me?"

Hunter Nian’s expression remained impassive, and as every second passed, the silence stretched, making Adrienne’s heartbeat race. It suddenly occurred to her that she was dealing with an untamed beast. Yet, at this point, she needed allies to continue her plans. If Hunter Nian denied her today, it was hard to tell if she could convince him after this meeting.

Then this handsome young man broke into a slight smile. His eyes failed to give Adrienne any insight into what he was thinking.

"You want to employ me?" He asked as if Hunter Nian had already figured out her intentions. "I fear Miss Jiang cannot afford my services."

"Money isn’t an issue, Mr. Nian. I have ways to earn money despite my young age." Adrienne chuckled, knowing that she was able to get his full attention this time. She had other plans for the money she would get from the deal she made with Lennox.

"I have an enmity towards the Ji family. If you choose to get involved with me, are you prepared for the consequences?" He continued to question her.

"I believe it’s the other way around. It would be a mistake for the Ji family if they underestimated me. It may take some time, but I’ll make the Ji family lose everything they hold dear. If you agree, I will help you collect their debts."

Adrienne’s eyes showed the ruthless side of her that only Lennox had seen before. Anyone who saw her in such a state would probably wonder if she had lived miserably all her life for her to be like this.

The expression in Hunter Nian’s eyes changed. He gently gazed at Adrienne and heaved a sigh.

"Then, Miss Jiang, I will be in your care now." He suddenly offered his right hand, a handcuff dangling from it.

Adrienne was stunned in place. Hunter had easily freed himself from the handcuffs during their small talk. She also thought it was impossible for her to persuade Hunter Nian so easily. Her eyes then narrowed dangerously. Since this man knew her, he might have some ulterior motives toward her. However, whether he bore malice towards her or not, only time could tell.

When Reese returned, his face hardened upon seeing Hunter freed from his handcuffs. He glanced at Adrienne in a silent question, but his niece only gave him a shrug. He still wasn’t convinced Hunter Nian wouldn’t pose a threat to her. If only he could find a decent person to look after her with such short notice.

Once Hunter was freed from his cell, Reese handed him a paper bag with clothes. He then gave him a quick rundown of his responsibilities as Adrienne’s bodyguard while Hunter changed into a new set of clothes.

"Addie can be reckless at times. Since you are older, I expect you to be level-headed to remind her of her actions. I wouldn’t be around for the next six months and I expect you to protect Adrienne at all costs. You can tell me now if you can’t do it. I don’t mind sending you back to that cell."

"I don’t understand. Why would someone like Miss Adrienne need a bodyguard like me?" Hunter asked as he slipped the shirt over his head and pulled it down.

"Her father and his second wife are conspiring against her and her mother. Adrienne is facing a battle she cannot deal with alone."

The sudden change in Reese’s expression wasn’t lost to Hunter Nian.

"They want to get rid of her? They must be tired of living."
