Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 59: Resigning to One’s Fate (3)
Adrienne said nothing. If Valerie could see past her cousins’ pretense, then it simply affirms that she was beyond foolish not to notice it in her past life. She used to think people hated her for no reason, while Ayla and Sierra always had quite a favorable public impression.
However, now, she knew it wasn’t the case. She previously failed to realise that she had voluntarily turned into her cousin’s backdrop. When Camilla successfully chased her out of their home, Ayla and Sierra’s families had the audacity to take some of her mother’s wealth, so there was no way Adrienne would let them off easily this time.
"I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks for your concern, Classmate Xia." She answered. "However, it would be better not to voice this kind of opinion in public. I wouldn’t want you to get bullied by others because of me."
Valerie merely shrugged before pushing a notebook toward Adrienne.
"Here. I thought you might want to catch up with the lessons you missed. I don’t mind lending you my notes."
Adrienne stared at Valerie blankly. She suddenly felt that it would be a pity if she allowed Valerie to tread the same path to her ruins. Looking at the confident young woman before her, who would have known that the only thing that awaits Valerie in the end was disaster?
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Valerie frowned at Adrienne.
"What do you mean, Classmate Xia?" Adrienne blinked twice and picked up the notebook.
"I thought you were looking at me with pity for a moment. You aren’t looking down on me, are you?" Valerie’s eyes narrowed.
"How could that be? Between the two of us, aren’t I the pathetic and pitiful one?" Adrienne said defense.
Valerie’s honest and straightforward nature was naturally unimpressive for other young misses like her. Yet, Adrienne would rather deal with Valerie than have Elise and her cousins around. It was hard to find an honest person these days anyway.
Still, Valerie’s marriage in the future would only ruin her. This was why Adrienne couldn’t help but sigh and sympathize with her. After all, she and Valerie were both in similar circumstances. They were married to the wrong men and were imprisoned for a lifetime.
"It’s good that you are aware," Valerie laughed, resting her chin on one hand. "However, you, Elise, and your cousins are all the same. All of you are pretentious people. Does it run in the Jiang family? However, unlike Ayla and Elise, you don’t pretend to be someone you are not. You don’t act virtuous and pure, unlike those two. It’s really a wonder how they could keep up with that facade."
Adrienne praised Valerie admiringly in her heart. She didn’t take Valerie’s comment to heart as she knew the young miss of the Xia family bore no ill intent.
"Unfortunately, I don’t have what it takes to be an actress."
She then thought Valerie was a determined girl with a lot of potential, that is, if only she could persuade her not to marry that good-for-nothing man Valerie married in her past life. It seemed that having Valerie Xia on her side wouldn’t be so bad.
The class started, and Adrienne paid attention to it. She couldn’t afford to disregard her studies now. In her previous life, she barely graduated from high school with passing grades, and it wasn’t enough to secure a spot in any of the prestigious universities in the country.
Her teachers were pleased to see her paying attention to their lessons now, however, she has yet to show improvement in her grades. Though they knew Adrienne wasn’t stupid, they were unaware of her full potential. With the preliminary exams coming, Adrienne would need to catch up with their lessons.
"Adrienne Jiang, come and solve this question!"
The mathematics teacher called her name, and Adrienne shot her head up in surprise. Valerie nudged her side, asking if she needed help solving the equation.
Adrienne heaved a sigh and smiled at Valerie. "No need, Classmate Xia. It’s not something I can’t deal with, but thanks for offering."
She got up from her seat and walked towards the blackboard. The usual Adrienne would have trembled in fear of being called by the teacher, looking clueless as she had no idea how to solve the problem before her. However, the new Adrienne gave the problem a quick look before she picked up the chalk and scribbled it on the blackboard.
The question on the blackboard was part of their mock exam before, and not many got the correct answer. Anyway, after she married Alistair and was ridiculed by his grandmother for having a weak foundation, Adrienne was forced to learn many things and this included algebra and accounting.
She checked her answers thoroughly before putting the chalk down and turned around to face their teacher, who was staring at the board blankly. Her classmates expected to hear criticism from their teacher, but after a moment of silence, they wondered if their teacher was alright.
It took a moment before the teacher returned to his senses and coughed, pretending to clear his throat. He realized that Adrienne wasn’t so bad at all, and she answered the problem correctly. Among the young misses of the Jiang family, Sierra was known to be good with numbers, but the teacher thought Adrienne wasn’t falling behind. Not even Sierra got the correct answer during their mock exam.
"Very good. Adrienne has answered the problem correctly. Keep this up, and you can enter the top ranks soon. It’s a pity not anyone from the elite class could get the right answers like you."
The praise Adrienne received shook everyone. The elite class was where the best students of Springfield Academy could be found. Most students who came from that class excelled in many fields, and Ayla and Sierra Jiang were part of it. For the teacher to praise Adrienne like this, does this mean she wasn’t really dumb but was simply muddle-headed before?
