Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 46: Mother-In-Law (2)
Adrienne went to the hospital, knowing that the Jiang family was awaiting her return. They must be on edge, waiting to see whether they made an enemy of the Zhao family. However, Adrienne ended up in Lennox’s room instead of seeing her mother. But Lennox wasn’t the only one in for a surprise because she hadn’t expected to see his mother with him.
Abigail Li looked at her curiously, wondering if Adrienne had mistakenly entered the wrong room. Adrienne was about to apologize when Lennox took the matter into his hands and broke the silence between them.
"Addie, dear. You are just in time. Come here and let me introduce you to my mother." He raised his left hand and gestured for Adrienne to come to him. "Come on, dear. Don’t be afraid. I promise my mother won’t bite."
Adrienne stiffened where she stood, not knowing how she should react. This wasn’t what she had in mind when meeting her future mother-in-law. What if Abigail Li disapproves of her? It would surely ruin her plan, as her marriage to Lennox was the safety net she’d been banking on for the sake of her future.
"Addie?" Lennox called her again, and this time, Adrienne took slow steps toward him until she stood next to his bed.
Adrienne could feel Abigail’s eyes on them. She had no idea what Lennox was planning and hated being caught off guard like this. Looking at the man before her, she realized that the bandage on his head was already gone, and his right eye reflected her face clearly. She flinched when Lennox suddenly took her hand, clasping his hand with hers. She hadn’t held hands with anyone of the opposite sex besides her ex-husband.
"Mother, I want you to meet Addie. Addie, this is my mother, Abigail Li." He said in an amused tone.
Adrienne tried to pull her hand away from Lennox’s hold but failed. She shot him a fierce glare, but the man only showed an amused glint in his eyes. She glowered at him but couldn’t say anything with his mother around. She faced her future mother-in-law and gave Abigail Li a polite bow.
"Pleased to meet you, Miss Li. I am Adrienne Jiang."
The woman before her was a true socialite. Adrienne could see where Lennox got his stunning looks. Abigail Li was the epitome of elegance. Even now, in her early fifties, Abigail still had the classy demeanor of any young lady — each movement was so captivating that Adrienne couldn’t tear her eyes from her. Adrienne was in great awe and respect seeing how refined and graceful her future mother-in-law was.
"Lennox told me of the arrangement between you. Are you sure you’ll do this for him, Miss Jiang? Are you not afraid of getting hurt because of Nox?" Abigail Li asked in a delicate voice, so pleasing in Adrienne’s ears.
"I’m aware of the consequences, Miss Li. Since I already gave Lennox my word, I plan to see this to the end." She replied, forcing herself to calm down while chastising herself for not knocking first before entering Lennox’s room.
Adrienne felt like she was in the tender hooks, not knowing what was running in Abigail Li’s mind. Since this was the first time she was meeting her, it would be impossible for her to persuade Lennox’s mother not to get involved in their plans.
Abigail then let out a sigh. "Nox, you know how dangerous it would be for her? How could you make a deal with her when you know what could happen?"
"Mother is worrying too much. My uncles and aunts are still over the moon because of Dad’s passing. I’ve sent someone to keep an eye on them. I’ll know at once if they got wind of Adrienne’s involvement. I’ll protect her. No questions asked."
Adrienne could feel his hold on her hand tighten slightly. She looked at his face, noticing that the amused glint was gone and was replaced with a coldness rivaling hers. Would Lennox really declare an all-out war against his relatives for her?
No... She didn’t think he would. For Lennox to stand against his relatives, he must recover from his injuries first. Adrienne thought it would be better if she could retrieve the children before his relatives took notice of their plans.
"But Nox..." His mother wanted to argue, but Abigail knew her son very well. When her son has decided on something, it would be impossible for anyone to change his mind. She could see the interest Lennox had in this young lady.
"Ah, before anything else, Addie. I want to give you something." Lennox released her hand and turned on his side to open a small drawer next to his bed. He pulled out a small velvet box and took a ring from it.
Adrienne and Abigail were both startled to see what was in his hand.
"Lennox... this..." Adrienne never thought Lennox took her marriage proposal lightly, but was he out of his mind? Did he really have to give her a ring in his mother’s presence?
"How would it be possible for my fiancée to convince others of our relationship without a ring on her finger?" Lennox said as he slid the ring on Adrienne’s left hand. He looked satisfied as he saw the ring glitter on her hand beautifully. "This should be enough for now. In the future, I’ll give you a wedding ring befitting for you, my lovely wife."
Adrienne would have smacked Lennox’s head for daring to utter such words before his mother. Did he forget that what they would have was nothing more than a contract marriage? Why would he go as far as to give her a ring to formalize things between them? 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
"I came to inform you that my mother will be transferred to another hospital soon." She said, and as expected, the smile on Lennox’s face waned.
"Does this mean you wouldn’t be able to visit me?" He grumbled. "I knew you’ll be able to persuade the Zhao family to help you, but I didn’t know it would be this fast."
