Chapter 45: Mother-In-Law (1)

Adrienne was pleased with the outcome of her visit to the Zhao family. Now that her Uncle Reese was stepping forward, willing to transfer her mother to another hospital, Camilla would surely think twice before scheming against her mother again. She would be wary of bribing another person to hurt Rosemary now that the Zhao family was involved.

However, this recent visit also opened her eyes to the possibility of her older brother’s fate. If he were truly dead, then Adrienne would seek revenge for him, but if there’s a chance he managed to live, then she could only hope that he was leading a better life than her.

"Are you sure you don’t want me to send you home instead? I would like to see how the Jiang family treats you with my own eyes." Reese asked as he walked with Adrienne, sending her off.

It was still two in the afternoon, but he and his mother weren’t willing to see Adrienne leave. This meeting was too short for their liking. Adrienne was able to make them see the truth and the mistakes they’d made.

"Calm down, Uncle. There’s no need for you to get all riled up like this. Now that the Zhao family has acknowledged me as part of the family, they wouldn’t act rashly against me." Adrienne said, smiling as she saw the unconcealed hatred in Reese’s eyes.

Reese sighed and looked at her. "It’s surprising how you can stay calm, Addie. Others would have lost their mind in despair or would have thrown a fit had they been in your shoes. Thank you for not giving up on your mother. It must have been hard on you, being alone all these years."

Adrienne could only smile in response. What was there to say? Would Reese believe her if she told him the truth?

Who said she hadn’t lost herself? Not only did she lose herself in her previous life, but she also lost everything she held dear in her heart. However, that wouldn’t be the case now. She wasn’t the same foolish Adrienne who allowed everyone to take advantage of her.

"It may take some time before I can return, Addie, but I will send my men to investigate what happened to your mother and brother back then. I’ll also arrange her transfer to another hospital as soon as possible. You don’t need to worry about the cost of her bills as I will also cover it. If you need anything, you know how to reach me." Her uncle continued as they walked together.

This was enough for Adrienne as his reassurance significantly reduced her worries. Now that she didn’t need to worry about her mother’s life support being cut because of financial incapacity, she could focus on destroying the rest of the Jiang family.

"By the way, Uncle. I have something to ask you." She asked, remembering her initial plan after meeting Reese Zhao. If there were anyone who would be able to give her a chance to find that valuable pawn, it would be her Uncle Reese.

"Anything for you, Addie. As long as it’s within your Uncle’s capabilities." Reese replied, trying to figure out what she was up to now. There wasn’t even a hint of hesitation on her face.

"Then, could Uncle help me release this man?" Adrienne handed Reese Zhao a paper with a name written on it. "I want to recruit him as my bodyguard. The faster I can get him by my side, the better."

Reese’s eyes widened upon seeing the name. He then looked at his niece in surprise. How did Adrienne know this person? Now that he thought about it, he didn’t know how Adrienne contacted him, given they’d never met. She reached him through his private line that not many were aware of.

"Addie, I have to warn you, this man is dangerous. Hunter Nian is trialed under a court martial for a reason. How do you know him anyway? Did Hunter Nian contact you first?" Reese couldn’t believe she was asking Hunter Nian, of all people.

"He and I have a mutual enemy, Uncle. That’s all you need to know. As for him being dangerous, doesn’t that mean he’s capable? If he’s capable, no one would be bold enough to hurt me, not even my father."

Reese had a conflicted expression on his face. He wasn’t sure whether he should help his niece, but seeing the cold countenance on her face, it seemed like she had deceived him and the Zhao family. He sighed, thinking a young lady like her shouldn’t be like this. The Jiang family had ruined her beyond repair, taking away her innocence and peace.

Adrienne Jiang had assessed the entire Zhao family for her plan, but Reese knew that her intention wasn’t to harm them but the Jiang family. It seemed she had reached a point of no return, and she only wanted to continue living to seek revenge against her father.

Her heart was already cold and unyielding, and he feared that the words she uttered today were only said with careful deliberations with the intention of winning their trust. She didn’t see them as a family she could rely on but as a powerful backing that could help her to proceed with her plan.

Now, she was asking him if he could free Hunter Nian so he could become one of her people. She spoke as if she had already expected that he would do it for her. However, now that Reese was aware of their situation, how could he have the heart to deny her of her wish?

"Fine. I’ll bail him out, but you must promise me, Addie. I don’t want to hear you or Hunter Nian getting involved in illegal things. However, I cannot assure you that he would accept your proposition for him to become your bodyguard. You would have to convince him yourself."

Adrienne beamed him with a bright smile. "Many thanks, Uncle. You don’t have to worry about that because I plan to deal with him myself."
