Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 47: Do You Really Have to Marry? (1)
Abigail could only shake her head as she watched the interaction between the two. When Gavin informed her about the deal between her son and Adrienne Jiang, she thought it was reckless and would be dangerous for them. She didn’t know the Jiang family personally, but she could see that there was bad blood between Adrienne and her family.
The Jiang family didn’t pose any threat against the Qin or the Li family, but something about the young lady before her made Abigail wary of her. Adrienne Jiang was different from other young ladies her age, and she wasn’t sure if that’s a good thing.
Abigail was used to seeing pampered, spoiled young misses from affluent families. They were usually concerned only about their looks and paid more attention to the fashion trends, but Adrienne Jiang seemed interested in something more sinister at her young age.
However, Abigail thought that if there was anyone who should help Lennox secure his inheritance, it should be her and not Adrienne. After all, Richard Qin had only done this to spite her through Lennox. She couldn’t believe her ex-husband still hated her till his last breath because her heart already belonged to someone else before they married.
There was no doubt that there was no love between the two, but she could see that her son was willing to compromise for Adrienne, a trait that was foreign to him. What was so special about the Eldest Miss of the Jiang family that she managed to catch Lennox’s eye?
She watched as Adrienne raised a slender brow at her son and tried to release her hand for the umpteenth time from Lennox’s hold but failed. Seeing that Lennox wasn’t willing to cooperate with her, Adrienne could only give him a scathing glare. Abigail did not doubt that Adrienne was wary of her presence.
"I didn’t think you held me in such high regard, Lennox." Adrienne said as she finally gave up resisting Lennox’s hold. "But you worry too much. How can we convince everyone of our relationship if we can’t establish where we start? Of course, I would still come here to see you, though it would be better if we’re not seen by the public too soon, else the Jiang family might come and stir trouble."
Lennox’s lips curled up, pleased with her answer. Abigail was taken aback. Since her return from her business trip, she hadn’t seen her son smile like this. He was usually cranky and hard to deal with. Who knew that his attitude would turn 180 degrees after seeing Adrienne Jiang?
"Good." Her son replied. "Come here whenever you can. I know you’re busy with your personal affairs, but I would rather hear the details of your progress directly from you instead of through Gavin."
"Don’t worry. You’ll be able to leave this hospital soon, too, Nox. I also agree with Miss Jiang. It would be better if the two of you kept a low profile for now."
The Qin family was still in disarray. Abigail was certain they would use Lennox’s condition to invalidate his position as the legitimate heir of the Qin Industries and its subsidiaries. Though her son had undergone multiple surgeries to fix his legs, it was still uncertain whether he could stand and walk again.
When Abigail received a call informing her of her ex-husband and Lennox’s accident, she thought she’d lost the sole reason for her living. She canceled all her commitments and was eager to return home. Her legs almost gave up when she saw her son’s injuries, wondering if this was her punishment from heaven for not being fully committed to her ex-husband during their marriage.
Lennox turned his head and looked at her. "Mom, you agree to our arrangement now?"
Abigail smiled faintly. She could see the anticipation in their eyes. Perhaps it was a good thing she was able to meet Adrienne Jiang in person.
"Do I have a choice? Even if I say no, you wouldn’t listen to me, but do you really have to marry?" She then glanced at Adrienne, noticing the young lady’s hardened expression. Abigail knew then that this marriage was vital to Adrienne’s plans. Abigail could only observe from the sidelines to see whether she was really up for revenge or was simply marrying to gain her son’s wealth.
"Mom, people used to say a wedding is a festive event that could chase away bad luck. Shouldn’t you be happy that your son is able to find a beautiful wife?" Her son countered. It seemed that these two had decided to proceed with this marriage.
"Nox, I don’t want you to marry like this. You should know where I stand on this by now." She sternly replied. She wanted nothing else but for her son to be happy and marry out of love, if possible. However, Abigail knew that her son didn’t know the true concept of having a family built on love and respect. Was she too hopeful that Lennox would have the one thing she couldn’t?
"I know you are worried, Miss Li, but I assure you, this arrangement is only temporary. We plan to divorce after two years once our goals are met." Adrienne said with a straight face.
"Miss Jiang, many things can happen in two years." She pointed out. Abigail feared her son would be heartbroken once Adrienne handed over their divorce papers.
Abigail could see that Lennox would be at a disadvantage in this marriage. Despite being unable to raise her son, Abigail knew her son like the back of her hand. She wouldn’t be surprised if Lennox refused to divorce later on.
"I’m aware." Adrienne lowered her gaze and looked at their entwined hands, "but I think it’s pointless to worry over something that hasn’t happened yet. We’ll deal with it when the time comes."
"Addie is right, Mom. But I do hope you’ll support us. We wouldn’t want the rest of the Qin family to think they could easily bully my wife because of my condition."
Abigail frowned. "Do you think they are foolish enough to make an enemy out of me?"
