Chapter 389: A Terrible Mistake (2)

While he was preparing Lennox’s room three days before he arrived from abroad to discuss his recent collaboration with his father, Carlos overheard him talking to his two personal assistants about how he would present the project on his own without giving Lennox credit for his participation in it.

Carlos felt it was yet another betrayal. Richard had already destroyed Harvey’s life, and now he was targeting his son for his personal gain. Carlos couldn’t believe Richard would stoop so low and betray Lennox because the latter was clearly casting a dark shadow over his accomplishments. He never thought Richard viewed his son as a threat to his own success, but it became evident that Richard’s ego and desire for recognition knew no bounds.

Carlos’s hatred toward Richard ignited again, which was why he was easily convinced to betray Richard in the end.

"Richard wasn’t planning to give you credit for your hard work for his project, Nox. I wanted to stop him from presenting the complete plan to your grandfather. If he succeeded, no one would dare question him as the new chairman, but I also knew it would cause a rift between you and your father. The plan was to get him involved in an accident, leaving him with minor injuries, but I would have never thought you would be in the same car as him."

His tears continued to stream down his face as he looked at his trembling hands.

"I couldn’t believe I’d done that to you, Nox. I promised Abigail and Harvey to care for you, yet..."

His shoulders sagged as he struggled to find the right words to express his remorse.

"It was why I stayed with you for the past five years, despite what I’ve done. I thought I was the one responsible for ruining your life. But when you met Adrienne Jiang, I saw that she had become a ray of light for you. You’ve changed for the better because of her, Nox. You lived your life according to your terms, something for which I prayed for a long time. I don’t know how to fix this. All I know is that I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you or your father. I was so blinded by my anger and desperation that I didn’t think about the consequences."

Lennox was stunned into silence, unable to process what he was hearing. He couldn’t believe that Carlos, the man who had always been there for him, would do something so heinous. He felt a mixture of anger and betrayal, but a part of him also understood why Carlos had done it.

It seemed to him that his father was a monster who had hurt everyone around him, and Lennox knew that his father was capable of anything to get what he wanted. But he couldn’t forgive Carlos so easily. He couldn’t condone his actions, no matter how much he understood them.

"I don’t know what to say, Carlos," Lennox finally said, his voice shaking with emotion. "You made a terrible mistake, one that could have cost me my life. I can’t forgive you for that. But I also understand why you did it. I just need some time to process everything."

Carlos nodded, tears still flowing down his face.

"I understand, Nox. I’ll do whatever it takes to make it right. I want you to know that I love you like my son, and I would do anything to protect you."

"One more question. Who do you talk with before the accident? Who set the stage to harm my father?" Lennox confronted him.

Carlos raised his head and met Lennox’s cold eyes. He sighed and forced himself to calm down before answering his young master.

"It’s your grandmother, Nox. She’s the one who staged the accident. As for her motives, you would have to ask her."

Lennox opened his mouth but found himself speechless after the revelation. He didn’t respond, still too overwhelmed by his emotions. He left the room and walked outside, needing some time to clear his head.

As he walked, he thought about everything that had happened in his life. He thought about his grandfather’s expectations and the pressure he had always felt to live up to them. He thought about his father’s constant criticism and neglect and how he had always sought validation from him. And he thought about Carlos, the man who had been there for him when no one else was.

Lennox felt suffocated at his own home. He asked Jet and Jasper to bring him to the Zhao estate to see his wife. He felt a sudden urge to see her. He needed her more than ever; he needed her love and support to help him get through this difficult time.

When he arrived, Lennox immediately found his wife playing chess alone under the lily tree. Her dark hair was pulled back in a loose braid, and she wore a simple white dress that accentuated the curves of her body. Adrienne looked up as he approached, and her expression softened when she saw the turmoil in his eyes.

"Len, what’s wrong?" She asked, setting the chessboard aside and standing up to greet him.

Lennox took a deep breath and pulled her into a tight embrace, burying his face in her hair as he finally allowed himself to break down.

"I need you, Adrienne," he whispered, his voice muffled by her hair. "I need you more than ever right now."

Adrienne wrapped her arms around him, holding him tightly as he cried. She didn’t ask any questions; she just stayed there with him, providing him with the comfort he so desperately needed.

As they stood there, Lennox realized he had found something he had never had before. He had found someone who loved him unconditionally and would never betray or hurt him in any way. And he knew he would do anything to protect her, just as Carlos had promised to protect him.

Eventually, Lennox pulled away, wiping away his tears. He looked at Adrienne and knew he had found his home. He knew he would always have her by his side, no matter what happened.

"Thank you," he said, his voice hoarse. "Thank you for being here for me."

Adrienne smiled softly and took his hand in hers, leading him to a nearby bench where they could sit and talk. As they sat there, Lennox told her everything that had happened, from Carlos’s confession to his grandmother’s involvement with the accident that took his father’s life.

He didn’t hold back, telling her his thoughts and emotions, his anger and betrayal, and the turmoil inside of him.

Adrienne listened quietly, letting him speak his truth without interruption. When he finished, she pulled back slightly and looked him in the eyes.

"I’m so sorry, Lennox. That must have been so hard for you to hear. But you have to remember that Butler Cheng did what he did because he loved you and wanted to protect you. It doesn’t excuse his actions, but it means he cared for you deeply."

The revelation also made her feel sad.

"As for your father and grandmother, it’s clear that they have their agendas and are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. Don’t make a rash decision, Len. Take some time to process everything and consider all your options. Remember that you have people who care about you and want to support you through this difficult time. It’s important to prioritize your well-being and make a decision that feels right for you rather than acting impulsively based on anger or hurt."
