Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 149: No Escape (1)
In order to destroy her, the entire Jiang family decided to turn their backs on her. Since this was the case, Adrienne did not have to think twice before taking the next step. But it shocked her to learn that they had been the cause of her infertility in her previous life.
Adrienne knew the Jiang family did not value her, but she had never imagined they would be so determined to destroy her. Her marriage to Alistair was blissful for the first two years. The two had, however, become estranged due to her infertility, which led to Adrienne’s subsequent depression. Since then, she and Alistair have been at odds, often bickering over insignificant issues.
She was devastated when she learned that Alistair had cheated on her for the first time. Adrienne had isolated herself from everyone and had stubbornly refused to see her husband. When all was said and done, she blamed herself in the end. Her cold treatment and inability to conceive a child were why her husband sought another woman’s company.
Her worth as a woman was decimated into nothingness. However, when Dylan was born and Myrtle passed away, Adrienne gained the chance of becoming a mother. She thought Alistair would accept his nephew as their child. Unfortunately, her husband didn’t acknowledge Dylan and only saw the boy as another nuisance in their relationship.
The wife was desperate to keep the child, but the husband wanted the wife all to himself. Nothing Alistair said could change Adrienne’s mind about keeping Dylan by her side. Sometimes, Adrienne wondered if their marriage was doomed to end from the beginning or if it was her fault for not meeting everyone’s expectations.
"How could this be? That family is so vicious. I can’t believe they would go this far just to harm you, Miss Addie. This kind of scheme is truly vile." Mother Wang’s mood was somber, and she looked extremely worried.
"Is it possible for a woman to become infertile through skin contact?" Adrienne asked Irina curiously.
Irina blinked, surprised that Adrienne was curious about the details of the drug.
"Yes, Miss. The fastest way to use it is to ingest it, but because the drug is so potent, having it close to your skin for a prolonged period of time could affect you. After all, our skin is the largest organ in our bodies. Many poisons and drugs could penetrate the skin and enter our bloodstream. It would take some time to take effect, though."
Adrienne had worn the bracelet for over three years, and by the time she married Alistair, the drug had already impaired her ability to conceive a child. She was doomed to have her marriage fail from the very beginning. No wonder the Jiang family had no qualms about her marriage, and Ayla was arrogant enough to seduce her husband later on. They all knew she was infertile!
Her father must have been anxious to the point where he would agree to sell her off to the Gu family and tarnish her reputation with a method like this. Although Lewis Jiang never liked Adrienne Jiang, everyone in the Jiang family didn’t dare to bully her openly before because of Rosemary Zhao. Understandably, now that Rosemary had encountered a misfortune, they didn’t waste their time and went after Adrienne.
"Miss, are you sure you want to switch this bracelet with Elise Jiang’s?" Irina asked. "Wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t attend the party instead?"
"What’s wrong with returning the gratitude to Aunt Camilla? They can scheme against me, but I can’t retaliate in return? Do you think I’m a saint willing to forgive everything they’ve done to me? I’m not that foolish to dive into the trap they had set head first."
"Miss, it’s not my intention to offend you. I think it would be better not to attend to avoid the problem."
Previously, Adrienne remembered that after receiving the bracelet from Camilla, she suffered a week-long fever that wouldn’t come down no matter what Myrtle did to lower it. Still, with her father’s insistence, Adrienne attended the coming-of-age ceremony of Young Miss Gu, not aware of what was waiting for her.
The infamous lecher, Young Master Gu, intended to make her his wife, and because of this, he colluded with Camilla Yan to send Adrienne to his bed.
For the second time, Alistair had saved her, which only deepened her admiration and infatuation for him. Alistair Han had voiced his intention towards her, and because of it, the Gu family was forced to step back unwillingly.
However, Alistair Han couldn’t interfere this time, and Adrienne could only rely on Lennox’s assistance.
The Jiang family had indeed laid a well-thought out trap, one that was worthy of Adrienne’s admiration. Her previous foolish and naive self was certainly no match against them back then, but that wouldn’t be the case now.
Adrienne smiled faintly. The Jiang family and Camilla Yan hadn’t done anything these past weeks that made her wonder if they had given up on her. Finally, the snake had shown its head, and it was time for Adrienne to smash it. Since they had taken action against her, how could she not strike back?
"I’m impressed with how knowledgeable you are, Irina. How are you aware of the existence of such a drug at your age?"
Irina flushed, not expecting to hear such a compliment from her young miss. Was Adrienne starting to trust her?
"Miss, I was raised by my grandfather. He used to run a traditional pharmacy downtown when he was alive, so naturally I picked up quite a bit of knowledge on traditional medicine. After his passing, Master Nox took me under his wing." She answered.
Adrienne nodded. "Then I’ll leave the bracelet in your care. Make sure that it ends up in Elise’s hand instead. Surely, the one Elise received would also have a secret compartment. In the end, the one who would suffer in this scheme won’t be me, but her."
