Chapter 104: To Live a Happy Life (2)

Thankfully, her brother didn’t question her about what transpired between her and Lennox last night. Even if Hunter asked her, Adrienne couldn’t say anything. Aside from sleeping like a baby, there wasn’t anything worth mentioning at all. For the next few days, Adrienne and Hunter stuck to their daily routine. Adrienne would attend school in the mornings while Hunter would look after their mother at the hospital. Uncle Mo would then bring her there to see her mother.

As Adrienne watched her brother wipe their mother’s face with a clean wet cloth, she couldn’t help but wonder.

"Do you hold any resentment towards Mom?" She asked. She was so distracted that she couldn’t focus on her homework.

Hunter went still then looked at her. He then sighed and placed the washcloth on the small basin next to him.

"I’ll be lying if I say I didn’t. Actually, from a young age, I knew I was adopted. Mom never told me about it, but I figured it out. Her husband passed away two years before my birthday and there aren’t any striking resemblance between us. People were also wagging their tongues as they spoke about my mother, so how can I not be suspicious of it? It was only proven when I read my mother’s diary and everything made sense to me."

Adrienne hesitated for a moment, but decided to probe more.

"How did Camilla find out that you’re my older brother? Did she deliberately harm you in any way?"

Hunter shook his head. "I’m not sure. I’m certain my mother had cut ties with her after she received me."

She didn’t have a response to that, so Adrienne could only cup her chin as she gave it a thought.

"Have you given my suggestion a good thought?" She asked, pertaining to Hunter’s return to military service.

"I’m considering it." Hunter nodded, "but I still have some concerns, Addie, especially regarding your safety."

"I can call Uncle Shark over earlier and have him replace you as my bodyguard."

She had given Uncle Shark a month to deal with his personal matters before he could start serving her as her bodyguard.

Hunter’s expression immediately turned bad upon hearing that. He was starting to question his sister’s judgment when it came to men. Obviously, Lennox Qin and that notorious loan shark had a devious reputation, but why would she associate herself with that kind of people?

"Addie, you’re still young and many things aren’t clear to you. When you meet men, you have to be cautious of their intentions. Don’t let them deceive you with flowery words and lure you to give them your affections."

Adrienne sighed inwardly. She never thought she would gain an overprotective brother in Hunter Nian.

"What kind of expectations did my brother think I have with men after seeing how fickle and treacherous our father is?"

Hunter was dumbstruck, hearing her words.

Adrienne looked at him, straight in the eye and said, "From childhood, I have witnessed how Father treated our mother. He was so heartless towards her, so how could I possibly fall for a man who only thinks that the world owes him everything and everyone should cater to his demands? I haven’t told you everything about the arrangement I have with Lennox. While it’s true that we’ve agreed to marry in the future, it’s only for convenience. Our marriage would only last for two years then we would part ways."

Hunter was left flabbergasted. What was Adrienned thinking, treating her own marriage like it was something so insignificant? Two years... didn’t she know many things could happen in that span of time? Love could bloom without one noticing it, so how certain was she that there would be no hard feelings between her and Lennox Qin once they divorced?

He observed his sister’s serious demeanor and his heart squeezed painfully in his chest. Adrienne spoke about her marriage dispassionately as if she was only treating it like a regular transaction. Even though they were brother and sister, born of the same parents, he had no way to figure out what she was thinking.

"Even so, I wish you would find one whom you could love with all your heart and live a happy life." Hunter knew he had no other choice but acquiesce in his sister’s wishes and protect her at the same time.

Adrienne had nothing to say in response. Happiness and love weren’t in her list of priorities. Aside from keeping them alive, the only reason for her existence was to exact revenge.

"What do you plan to do now?" Hunter’s tone implied something that Adrienne easily understood.

"Are you talking about the Jiang family? I have already stirred trouble for Father and Aunt Camilla, so now it’s our uncles’ turn. Tomorrow, I’ll send you on an errand. You have to find the person Uncle Waylen has been hiding for sometime now."

The recent scandal would keep her father and Camilla busy, racking their brains to resolve the matter and Adrienne would rather not be complacent and intended to proceed with her plans.

Hunter pondered deeply. He wondered how their uncles and their cousins had offended Adrienne in his past life. Alas, he only found out of her existence before his death and there wasn’t enough time since his rebirth to investigate further.

"Did Uncle Waylen offend you in some way?"

Adrienne gave him a smile, so wicked that it gave Hunter an involuntary shiver down his spine.

"The Jiang family owes me some life debts and I intend to make them pay for it."

Waylen Jiang and Maryam Fang were the ones who convinced her to marry Alistair Han to save the Jiang Corporation. In her foolish state, Adrienne agreed, thinking marrying Alistair would be like striking two birds with one stone, not knowing she was being sent over as a sacrificial lamb instead. In this life, she would cause discord between them before they could even try to sacrifice her again.
