Chapter 70: Explain The Lesson

"I am Amaya Rocas. I grew up on an island with an incredible wealth of flora and fauna. My father taught me to identify different types of plants and made me memorize their scientific names when I was seven years old. Though I hate the boring names, I came to love biology."

Silence descended into the classroom. The jaws of some students dropped while the male students at the back had their mouths open as they gazed at Amaya with unbelief.

"You are joking, right? How can a seven-year-old memorize the long and boring scientific names of those plants?" Ardana spoke sarcastically. "You are just bragging to attract attention," she added softly so that only her seatmates heard her.

Amaya frowned and this did not escape Stephane’s keen eyes.

"I am not joking. It is the truth." As if to prove her point, Amaya started reciting the common names of plants that she thought were well-known, then she mentioned their scientific names, their species, and sub-species.

"That’s enough Miss Rocas. You can go back to your seat." Stephane said gently and looked at her with interest. ’Indeed she was not joking.’

"How can it be possible? I thought she grew up in the jungle and there are no schools or internet there. How did she learn?" A chubby girl who was sitting beside Julienne still cannot get over the shock when she heard Amaya recite the scientific names of some plants. She was the best in biology class but then, she only knew the scientific names of a few plants.

"That’s what you call a genius." Julienne teased her.

The cold teacher in front glared at her and Julienne stopped talking and straightened her back.

Samantha studied the reaction of her classmates when Amaya was standing at the front. She panicked when she saw the admiration in the eyes of most of her classmates who used to adore and sucked up to her. She looked at the back of Amaya and she felt a sense of crisis.

’Is she going to steal the limelight from me? No way! I should find a way to keep my popularity and my fan base intact.’

Stephane started his lecture. All the female students were very attentive. They cannot take their eyes off him.

Stephane frowned when he saw the kind of look that his students were giving him. He started to ask questions to gauge if they were really attentive or not. His expression grew uglier and uglier every time a student failed to answer a simple question.

"Aren’t you listening to my lecture? You seem so attentive, how come you do not remember what I have just discussed? Are you telling me that I have wasted my thirty minutes for nothing?" Stephane was angry. He brought down the book he was holding on the podium and a loud thud was heard.

’Because everyone is daydreaming about you Teacher,’ Julienne said silently.

Amaya hesitated before raising her hand. She then spoke softly. "Teacher, if you let me, I can answer your question."

"But I want any of them to answer it." Stephane snapped. His voice was loud and clear.

Amaya shrunk back in her seat. She felt aggrieved. She did not understand why her teacher was angry at her when she just wanted to answer the question.

Stephane’s forehead creased. He was surprised to see Amaya’s reaction. ’Did I scare her?’

"All right, you can answer them," his expression softened.

Amaya hesitated before she stood up. She articulated what symbiosis is and explained in detail mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. When she was done, the teacher was looking at her strangely.

"Miss Rocas, are you sure that you should be in this class? Aren’t you supposed to be in a university instead?"

"I don’t know." Amaya was unsure of herself. "I have never been to school. I took the admission exam and I was told to join this class." She was looking at her teacher with those big and innocent eyes.

Stephane unconsciously swallowed. Her eyes seemed to hold some magic that draw other people to gaze at the two pools of amber. Once you did, it was difficult to pull back.

When the class learned that she has never been to school, loud gasps were heard. Even Stephane’s eyes narrowed when he heard what she said. He wasn’t aware of Amaya’s background as he was not fond of reading internet gossip.

"Are you for real? Just how old are you now?" someone from the back asked.

Amaya felt offended. "I might have not gone to school but I did not lack knowledge. What I know might even be more than what you learned from school."

"Aren’t you very humble to say such words?" snide remarks from a woman’s voice came from the back.

"That’s enough. She said that this is the first time she had entered school. What’s wrong with that? Isn’t that just like homeschooling?" Stephane stood up for Amaya.

Amaya looked at Stepane with a grateful look. The tall hunky teacher sucked in the air. ’Why does she need to look at me like that?’ He forced himself to look away and focused his attention on the last row of seats.

"Find a partner and bring a plant on Wednesday. We will meet at the laboratory and each of you should use a microscope to study the plant and record your observation."

"Amaya, you will make me your partner right?" Julienne asked with a face full of expectation.

"Of course." She answered without hesitation.

After giving a few more lectures and an assignment, the biology class ended and Stephane left the room without looking back.

The moment the door closed, the class descended into chaos. It was like a marketplace. Some of their classmates were convincing others to be their partners. The females who were the majority of the class population were giggling as they shared how handsome and manly their teacher was.

"Did you notice that Stephane became more muscular compared to last time? The muscles on his chest are defined even when he was wearing a coat. His lips were so sexy, I want to kiss them."

Amaya was dumbfounded. So they were not really listening to their teacher? What were they talking about?
