Chapter 60: I Can Never Repay Her

Before Marx can answer, a pair of similar looking man and woman entered the VIP room. The waiter added two chairs for both of them.

"Hello Grandpa, Dad! It is been a long time." they said in unison.

"Hello Governor, Fiona." The man who has a resemblance with Marx greeted the two persons sitting beside Marx.

"Brother, how have you been? I was on a business trip during the past few days. When I came back, you were in Lireya." The man who was older by Marx by two years gave him a sincere smile as he patted his shoulder. Marx stiffened.

"I am still alive and kicking Stephen." Marx was indifferent when he spoke. Stephen and his twin sister Stacey were his father’s children with his mistress. What angered him the most was the fact that they were older than him. His mother and father were married for five years before she was able to conceive and Marx was born.

Fredrick Skylar was impatient. He thought his wife was unable to conceive and so he found himself a mistress who bore him not only a son but also a daughter.

"Show some respect. Stephen is still your older brother." His grandfather admonished him. His father also looked at him coldly. He didn’t understand why Marx was always against his two siblings.

Marx did not say anything but continued to munch on his steak.

"We are so worried about you brother. We are happy that you are fine." Stacey said in a voice full of concern.

"Were you?" Marx did not hide the mockery in his voice.

Stacey was taken aback by his coldness. "Brother.." her voice broke and her eyes glistened with unshed tears.

"That’s enough. We are here to have lunch as a family and we also have guests." Fredrick Skylar stopped his children’s bickering before it gets worse.

Marx continued eating while Karl was silent all the time. Like Marx, he also did not like his twin siblings because they always took things away from him and Marx when they were children. If Marx or he liked a toy, Stephen would find ways to take it from them. At school, Stephen would always instigate their classmates that more often than not will result to a brawl. Marx would then be punished by their grandfather or their father.

When Karl was still in Grade 1, he was bullied by his classmate to the point that Karl was hurt badly. Marx beat his bully classmate. Instead of helping Marx, Stephen and Stacy fabricated a lie and they told a different story to their father. In the end, Marx was punished severely and was grounded for a few days all because he stood up for his young brother.

When Marx finished his meal, he stood up and was about to leave when his grandfather stopped him.

"Why are you already standing? We are not done eating yet. Go back to your seat." Hendrix Skylar reprimanded Marx.

Marx has still a lot of things to do and he did not want to waste his time on petty things. He went back to his seat out of respect to his grandfather.

"You and Fiona are engaged for two years now. Aren’t you tying the knot already?" Fredrick said out of the blue.

Karl who was sipping his wine suddenly choked and was coughing.

Marx has a stern expression on his face. He wanted to say that he never agreed to the engagement but then he considered the presence of the governor. "I am only 27 and still too young. I don’t have plans of marrying in the next five years."

Fredrick glared at his son. Didn’t he know that they would benefit a lot from the marriage if it happened now? Who wouldn’t want a governor for a father in law? He glanced at his father but his father was busy with his food and was not worried at all.

"I heard that my brother has taken an interest on the wild princess that you brought out of that island. I also heard that brother even bought an entire island for her and that you will be handing over the Miraga Museum to the the Lireyan government. Is this right?"

Stephen has visited the museum along with his friends who pestered him to convince Marx to put the artifacts in an auction. Some of Ibrahim’s work were a masterpiece that could be sold for millions of Usturian Dollars.

"My brother is truly capable to be able to get such information. But you got some facts wrong. Firstly, I am just facilitating the purchase but the money used to purchase is not mine but hers. Secondly, those artifacts belonged to the princess and her father. I just helped them carry the items back to where it truly belonged."

Marx narrowed his eyes.

Stephen coughed awkwardly.

"Brother, sorry for the wrong info." Stephen apologized, then he focused on his food while thinking deeply. ’Is my informant wrong?’

"Are you talking about the eldest Princess of Lireya who perished fifteen years ago along with her mother in a plane crash?"

"Yes, Governor." Marx answered.

"Oh, I see. What a lucky lady. She saved you but then you also saved her so you are now even. You shouldn’t owe her anymore." The governor was implying that he shouldn’t bother with Amaya.

"Her luck was my luck Governor. You don’t know what I have been through in that island. I can never repay her in my lifetime." Marx said with conviction.

The seven other people who were seated with him on the table were silent for a while.

The governor coughed. "Sorry for my insensitive words." He apologized.

"I wish to meet her Marx. I’d like to express my gratitude to her in person for saving my fiancé." Fiona tried to dispel the awkward atmosphere.

Marx glanced at her coldly. His expression darkened everytime he heard the word fiancé. "No need. She stayed her for a few days. My family except Karl hadn’t thanked her so what is one more person not expressing gratitude?"

Fredrick and Hendrix Skylar both lowered their heads. They knew that Marx’s words were for them.

"Brother, I am sorry I wasn’t able to come last week. Stephen and I were in Province 12 and we were only able to come back yesterday." Stacey explained.

"You don’t have to explain." Marx snapped at her and Stacey sank back. Something changed with Marx.
