Chapter 61: Break Off The Engagement

"Did you find out why the plane crashed?" Stephen asked while finishing the last bit of steak on his plate.

"Marx was not able to retrieve the black box." It was the governor who answered Stephen.

Marx’s gaze traveled to Stephen and then back to his father. His deep eyes reflected a swirl of emotions that even Hendrix and Karl who were the people closest to him could not fathom.

"It is good that all of us are here," Marx said calmly. "Governor, I don’t intend to offend you and I hope that you will understand."

Frederick’s heart skipped a beat. He looked at his father with a worried expression. ’What is Marx going to say?’

"My perspective has changed with my near-death experience so I will be brutally honest. You all know that I don’t like Fiona and the engagement that you agreed with my father and grandfather is between the three of you. It has nothing to do with me."

Fiona gasped and started sobbing. Stacey reached out and held her hand.

"I don’t like to trap her in a loveless relationship. She deserved a man that would dote on and cherish her and that man is not me." Marx continued. His voice was calm and resolute.

The governor looked at Marx with admiration. He was breaking the engagement and yet he did it in a way that it looked dignified and beneficial for his daughter.

Fiona looked at Marx in horror. She then looked at her father silently pleading with him to do something.

"It is not for you to decide Marx. This marriage alliance is a win-win for both our families." Frederick raised his voice.

"If you want the marriage alliance to continue, then you can ask Stephen to marry her. It will not matter anyway. Stephen is a Skylar and he is even your firstborn."

"You.." Frederick could not continue because he was very angry. He felt his blood pressure rising and he clutched his chest.

"I will hand over my position as CEO to him if that is the condition," Marx uttered in a threatening voice.

Stephen who was sipping on his wine looked at Marx with big eyes. Did he hear him correctly?

Hendrix banged his fists on the table. The glass beside him clattered.

"What nonsense are you talking about?" His grandpa barked angrily at him.

"Grandpa, my elder brother has always wanted to be the CEO of the Skylar Conglomerate. Why not give him a chance? He can also fulfill the engagement with the Chase. Besides, I wanted to take a rest." Marx looked at the governor apologetically.

Stephen stole a glance at the woman beside Marx. She was very beautiful. He will not be at a loss if he married her. His gaze shifted to Marx. What was he thinking? Was he serious about stepping down?

Hendrix studied his grandson for a moment. He seemed to be different. Could it be because of the plane crash? Did he really have a near-death experience on that island? He seemed okay when he first saw him ten days after he was marooned so he did not think that he was seriously injured. It looked like he was wrong. The accident must have affected him psychologically. Previously, he was not strongly opposed to the marriage alliance between him and the governor’s daughter but now he was against it.

The old man pondered deeply. He knew Marx’s temperament. The more you forced him to do something, the more that he will rebel. He did not want to awaken the rebellious side of his grandson.

Stephen was good but Marx was outstanding. At such a young age, he brought Skylar Conglomerate to new heights. Stephen would not be able to achieve half of what Marx has accomplished. Nevertheless, he was also his grandson. Maybe it was time for him to test the capabilities of his eldest grandson.

"Alright, you can take a leave for three months. Stephen will be the deputy CEO during your absence." Hendrix Skylar announced calmly.

Marx glanced at his grandfather and gave him a grateful smile. He has predicted this outcome and he was happy.

Frederick, Stephen, and Karl were stunned. Stephen however recovered fast. "Thank you for your trust grandpa. Don’t worry, I will definitely not fail you." He said bashfully.

Karl leaned toward Marx and whispered. "Brother, what has gotten into you?"

"I am just tired so I want to rest. Don’t worry, I know what I am doing."

Stephen was gloating inside. Finally, he will be taking the helm of Skylar’s business. He will not give Marx a chance to have a comeback. Ever since Marx became the CEO, he became arrogant and difficult to bully. He also started to suppress him and his sister.

"Daddy, if it is not Marx that I will marry, then I’d rather break off the engagement." Fiona looked at her father wearing an aggressive expression.

Frederick who has not recovered yet from the shock of his father’s decision tried to salvage the situation.

"Fiona, why don’t we discuss this some other time? Marx will only take a leave for three months. It is not that he will not come back."

Fiona looked comforted after hearing Frederick’s voice.

"I said earlier that I don’t like to be unfair to Fiona. I don’t like to trap her in a loveless relationship. From the start, I never agreed to be her fiancé so it is better for both of us to end this."

"No! I agree with Uncle Frederick just to discuss this in the future." Fiona interjected in a panicked voice.

Marx pursed his lips. He wanted to insist on the breakup but his grandfather looked at him sharply and Marx could not say anything.

"I would like to thank the Governor and his daughter for joining us today. I apologize on behalf of the family for the unpleasant words that my grandson uttered earlier."

Marx looked at his grandfather sternly. He was not happy about his apologizing but then he recognized that their guest today was a Governor. Though the Skylars were powerful it will be difficult for them to offend a high-ranking government official. They cannot afford another enemy at the moment.
