Chapter 253: He is Here

"Is it really that bad? I never saw you so scared before. Not even when we were chased by anacondas deep in the jungle of Miraga." Marx pulled her close and hugged her as he patted her back.

"He is not a normal wolf, Marx. Didn’t you see how huge and strong he was last night? His obsession with his mate has driven him crazy."

Marx hugged Amaya tighter. He could feel that her body was trembling.

"Don’t worry. I will not let him hurt you. The defense system around us should be enough to deter or kill him." Marx handed her a handgun. "Here, you can use this for emergency."

Amaya studied the gun. It was a different model from what she had practiced but the mechanisms were the same.

"Remember that you should only pull the trigger once the energy shield is down." Marx reminded her.

Amaya nodded. She looked at the horses that were tied to the nearby tree. She did not notice when Vasquez had gotten the grass they were feeding on.

"Will the horses be alright?"

"They will be alright Princess," Vasquez assured her.

"Are they inside the shield?" Amaya looked around but could not could not see the shield.

"They are inside the perimeter of the shield," Marx answered her. He patted her head and said gently, "Go inside the tent and take a rest. We will stay here and keep watch."

"I don’t want to. I can take a rest here." She leaned on Marx’s chest and closed her eyes

"You can lie down and put your head on my lap."

Amaya thought about it. Wouldn’t that make him uncomfortable? She struggled for a while but in the end, she took the sleeping bag from the tent and spread it on the ground. She lay down placing her head on his lap before closing her eyes.

Marx ran his fingers through her hair. His movement was so gentle that Amaya fell asleep in no time. Marx’s gaze never left Amaya’s face. He looked at her tenderly and he caressed her face with his thumb. He was not contended so he started tracing the outline of her lips with his fingertips.

Suddenly, the alarms were set off. Animals in the nearby vicinity caused chaos as they fled from the sound that was hurting their head.

Amaya was jolted awake. She was still disoriented because she was in a state of deep sleep and then suddenly woke up.

"What happened?" She asked in a daze.

"Something triggered the sensor."

No sooner had Marx completed his sentence when a tree branch was hurled toward them. It hit an invisible shield and it fell a few meters from them.

The huge wolf who came out from the river howled in anger. The sound was hurting his head and driving him crazy. He pulled the weeds from the river bank and stuffed them inside his ears. He felt better.

The beast uprooted a small tree and threw it toward the trio. He aimed at the human who was separated from the two others.

Like the branch that he threw earlier, the small tree hit something invisible and bounced off. He understood that there was a barrier between him and the woman who had his mate’s scent.

He picked up the branch and the tree and threw both of them in the direction of the horses. The horses sensed danger and they neighed. Three times in a row, the objects he threw bounced back and he was almost hit by them.

He picked up a huge rock and threw it at the man who was holding the woman. As expected, even the rock bounced back, but this time he heard a crack.

"Damn! This wolf is not only humongous but also very cunning. Why can’t he attack us directly?" Vasquez cursed. His grip tightened on his gun. He has used up his laser gun when he fought with the spiders earlier.

The wolf continued to throw rocks and the trees on them. Marx frowned. He checked his cellphone and the shield started to show some cracks. He did not have a backup power to reinforce the energy field. The shield would soon break if the wolf continued to throw rocks and branches at them.

"The shield will soon break. The moment it breaks let us shoot at the same time." Marx said calmly.

Fortunately, the wolf thought that throwing stones and branches was useless. He contemplated and decided to attack. He thought that he would be able to rip whatever invisible barrier there was with his sharp claws.

He moved so fast that his shadow was like a blur in the dim light of the bonfire. The laser beam activated but the wolf was so fast that the beam only caught his tail. The wolf roared in pain. His tail was cut in half. He was so angry. He bared his fangs as he stood still. He held his injured tail with his paw. His paw resembled human hands with hairs and claws instead of fingernails. He applied pressure on his injured tail until the bleeding stopped.

The beast picked a branch near him. He held it at one end and put the other end at the spot where he passed earlier. The beam activated and the branch was cut in half. The wolf snarled. It sniffed the air and finally found the sensor. He smashed it with the remainder of the branch.

He put out the branch once again. The blue light did not appear anymore.

The wolf became cautious. He was still in pain. He slowly walked on his two hind legs like a human while he was holding the remainder of the branch which was more than two meters long with his right paw or rather right hand. He could grip the branch well because his paws were not a wolf’s paw.

"Damn it! This wolf is far too intelligent. I can’t believe it deactivated our first defense." Marx cursed under his breath. He checked the status of the shield and its strength was at 50%.

The wolf extended his right upper limb. He was testing if there were hidden traps until the branch poked into an invisible barrier.

The wolf was thrown back a meter away. He felt a current pass through the branch. The thick fur that covered his hand protected him from the electrical current from the shield and he felt a tingling sensation instead of being electrocuted.

He picked up the big rock that he had thrown earlier and threw it in the direction of the round crystal object that he saw on the ground. He used a lot of force that the shield cracked.

"Warning! The shield’s strength is at 25%. Reinforce the shield now."
