Raised From The Wild-Chapter 112: Wolves!
Phoebe was dejected. Then, her face contorted into anger. She was very angry. If she were at home, she could have broken a lot of furniture. Did Marx just threaten her? She inhaled deeply to relax. What Marx said was true: every time she wanted to harm Amaya, she was the one who got harmed.
’Is that damn woman a witch?’ She cursed under her breath.
The men have finished setting up the tents for everyone except Amaya. She did not bring a tent with her. Dave was worried for her, but she just shrugged it off.
They ate their supper early. The women decided to sleep early because they were tired. The men agreed to take turns taking watch. Vasquez and Enrico paired up. Dave and Marx were the second pair, while Drake and Ricardo were the third pair.
"Aya, you can use my tent." Dave and I will be guarding for three hours so I will not be using it. Amaya wanted to protest but Marx did not allow her to.
At 6:00 pm, the forest was plunged into darkness. The nocturnal animals started to make their presence known. Amaya was sleeping peacefully inside Marx’s tent while the others have a hard time sleeping.
At 9:00 pm, Amaya woke up. She grasped her quiver and slung it at her back. She took the bow and went outside.
Marx was surprised to see Amaya. "Did you not got any sleep? Is the tent uncomfortable?"
"There is something out there. I can’t figure out." Amaya’s brows furrowed. She tried to appear as calm as possible and perked her ears to listen but because there was a lot of noise she was having a hard time focusing.
Soon she figured it out.
"Wolves!" The moment Amaya uttered the word, all the sleeping men got up and went out. They were carrying a black object in their hands.
There were twelve wolves in total. Amaya was thinking of a way to scare the wolves so they don’t have to be killed or injured when she heard a loud sound.
Vasquez fired his gun. The sound turned the entire forest into chaos. A gray wolf was on the ground. In the darkness of the night, Amaya could not see the pool of blood under the lifeless body, but she could smell it.
The pack of wolves were scared by the gunshot. They growled and was preparing to attack at the same time.
Amaya growled back at them. "If you don’t want all of you to die, leave now. Look at your brother. It died just like that. The human weapon is powerful. You don’t stand a chance." Amaya gave out a snarling sound.
A black wolf, probably the alpha, came forward and talked to the girl who knew their language.
"You have occupied our territory, killed my brother and now you are asking us to leave?"
"We are just passing by and sleeping for the night. Besides, this island belongs to me." Amaya took an arrow and positioned it at her bow. "Leave now!" Amaya growled louder.
"Alpha, I think we should listen to her. Their weapons can kill us so easily." A white wolf which was smaller in size growled.
The men who were still holding their guns were stunned.
’What is the princess doing?’ Vasquez silently asked himself.
’Why is she growling and snarling? Is she talking to the wolves, ’ Enrico pondered.
’Does she really understands the wolves?’ Dave’s eyes darted between Amaya and the wolf. He wanted to take out his cell phone to record the scene but he was too scared that his actions would agitate the wolves and caused them to attack so he stayed still.
Marx who has his gun pointed to the biggest wolf was watching intently and ready to pull the trigger anytime.
Beauty and the beast glared at each other. Amaya’s eyes looked amber against the flickering bonfire behind her back. She held the wolf’s golden eyes as she gazed at it without blinking for a full minute.
The wolf lowered his gaze and snarled, then turned around and led the rest in retreat.
"Shit, what was that?" Dave exhaled deeply. He didn’t know he was holding his breath.
"Is it just me? How come it seemed to me that the princess is talking to the wolf?" Enrico was baffled.
"I thought so as well." Ricardo glanced sideways at Amaya who approached the wolf that was lying on the ground.
Marx approached Amaya calmly. He used his cell phone’s flash light to illuminate the animal that lay lifeless on the ground.
"Is it dead?" He asked. He stood beside Amaya who was crouching as she checked the animal who has a gun shot wound in between his eyes.
"Yes, it is dead. He died immediately the moment the bullet entered his head. Vasquez is a sharp shooter."
"Are there many wolves around?" Marx asked her.
"It is a pack. I don’t know how many there are but there were twelve who attacked us just now."
Amaya stood up. She glanced at Vasquez, who was looking longingly at the wolf.
"It’s your kill. You want to skin him?"
Vasquez looked at Marx who was indifferent at first but nodded afterwards.
"Yes," Vasquez answered.
"It is still too dark. I am not sure though if it’s blood will attract other predators."
"I’ll keep watch. It is our turn anyway. Everyone should go back to sleep. Boss, you can use my tent."
Marx looked at Vasquez with disapproval. His gaze followed Amaya who went to the stream to wash her hands. After washing her hands she headed back to her tent and went inside as she yawned.
The sleeping bag was unzipped and laid down on the ground like a thin mattress. She was about to close her eyes when Marx entered and crawled beside her.
"Can I sleep here?" He asked in an expectant voice.
"Yes of course. This is your tent." They have slept side by side back on the island so Marx sleeping with her will not make any difference.
Marx slid beside her. The sleeping bag when spread open was enough to accommodate the two of them.
Marx placed his two hands under his head and closed his eyes. His scent entered Amaya’s nostrils who was drowsy at that time and in between the state of sleepiness and wakefulness.
She subconsciously shifted her body towards Marx, her head nestled under his armpit.
The corners of Marx lips stretch sideways and curled up slightly. He adjusted his hand and placed it under her head.
