Chapter 485 - Training for Pokémon Contests

"Long time no see, Candice."

As Terrance finished speaking, Candice finally recognized him.

It had been too long since they last met, and at their age, appearances could change drastically. It was perfectly normal to hesitate before being certain.

However, Terrance's features were still quite distinct. After a brief moment of surprise, Candice spoke. "Terrance?!"

"It's me." Terrance smiled. He had this particularly unique short hair of golden-brown color... At least up until now, he had never met anyone with the same hair color as his.

"It really is you... I heard you also became a Gym Leader. Congratulations!"

Candice was briefly stunned, then immediately broke into a smile. "I really didn't expect this."

Their conversation fell into the ears of Bunta and his two companions, causing their eyes to widen in disbelief as they stared at Terrance.

Wait a minute...

What did Snowpoint Gym's Gym Leader Candice just say?

"You... you... you... Terrance, you're also a Gym Leader?!" Bunta was the most shocked. He shook his head vigorously—how could the Trainer he had been traveling with all this time turn out to be a Gym Leader? He had hidden it too well!

"An unfamiliar face." Bunta's two companions studied Terrance carefully, trying to recall if he looked familiar. However, it didn't ring a bell.

"Ah, well..." Terrance scratched his head and said, "I'm from the Hoenn region. I'm the Gym Leader of Fallarbor Gym over there. I only recently took the position, so I'm not well-known yet. It's nothing worth mentioning."

"A Gym Leader from Hoenn..." Bunta didn't fully process that part. After all, to an ordinary Trainer, Gym Leaders were already incredibly strong.

When talking about well-known Trainers in a city, the first to come to mind were usually the Gym Leaders. And on a regional scale, aside from top-tier Trainers like the Elite Four, Gym Leaders were the most recognized figures.

That was exactly why Bunta and his companions were so shocked to learn that Terrance was also a Gym Leader.

"Shouldn't you guys be starting your Gym battle?" Terrance reminded them.

They couldn't just stop the battle that was about to begin because of him.

"Oh!" Candice snapped back to attention and apologized to Bunta. "Well then, in that case, let's start the battle!"

"Couldn't ask for anything better!" Bunta immediately got into battle mode.

"Little Vulpix, come out and watch." Seeing that the battle was about to begin, Terrance took out Vulpix's Poké Ball and pressed it lightly. A snow-white, fox-like Pokémon appeared on his shoulder.

"Vul~pix~"

Little Vulpix lay lazily on Terrance's shoulder, letting out a lazy yawn, looking completely uninterested.

Watching a battle was nowhere near as fun as participating in one. Terrance could more or less guess what Ice Vulpix was thinking.

"Take it more seriously." Terrance tapped the Little Vulpix on the head and said.

Unlike when it was just born, after a period of training, Little Vulpix was now capable of holding its own in battle. Interestingly, Terrance's goal was to mold it into a Pokémon made for Pokémon Contests.

Terrance had seen pictures and videos of Alolan Ninetales before. That elegance and mysterious aura—it surpassed even Altaria. In Terrance's eyes, it wasn't inferior to Milotic.

Perhaps influenced by the Fire-type Ninetales from this region, when he first saw Alolan Ninetales, he was struck by a sense of contrasting beauty. That was one of the reasons Ice Vulpix fascinated him.

"Besides, the little guy is probably even better suited for Pokémon Contests than Altaria..."

Terrance thought to himself.

"What kind of Pokémon is that...? Could it be a Vulpix?!"

At the same time, the others noticed the Pokémon Terrance had released and were visibly shocked.

"A Shiny Vulpix?!"

"A Shiny Pokémon?!"

Shiny Pokémon—this term referred to Pokémon whose colors differed from others of the same species. Such Pokémon were extremely rare and seldom seen in the wild.

Even in a large population, there might not be a single one.

Seeing Terrance's snow-white Vulpix, it was only natural for everyone present to be surprised.

Just as the Gym battle was about to start, Terrance's actions once again drew everyone's attention.

"It's not a Shiny Pokémon," Terrance waved his hand. "I just got back from the Alola region. This is a Vulpix I caught there. Due to environmental differences.... Pokémon from that region have some distinct traits compared to ours."

"Alolan Vulpix is an Ice-type. This little one was only recently born, so I want it to watch the battle and gain some experience," Terrance explained.

Candice specialized in Ice-type Pokémon, so Ice-type Pokemon were bound to appear in this battle. Everyone immediately understood Terrance's intentions.

"I see. That just makes me even more serious about this!" Candice, noticing Ice Vulpix's lazy expression, instantly became more serious.

Luckily, Terrance had no idea what Candice was thinking. Otherwise, he would have taken a moment to silently mourn for Bunta.

"Watch closely—pay attention to how the opponent uses Ice-type moves." Terrance rubbed Little Vulpix's ear as he spoke. Although he had his own unique teaching methods for it, if it could absorb some strengths of others or gain some inspiration, that would be a huge win.

Whether it was a traditional Trainer or a Coordinator, improving through continuous learning was essential.

"Vul~pix~" Little Vulpix nodded.

Terrance smiled. Little Vulpix had decent talent, but it wasn't at the top level—there was still some disparity compared to Swablu from back then. However, Terrance's training concepts and experience as a Trainer had improved significantly, and he could now allocate more resources to Ice Vulpix. Because of that, its growth environment wouldn't necessarily be any worse.

That said, Terrance had even greater confidence in Ice Vulpix's potential for Pokémon Contests... and he had his reasons for this.

"Go, Infernape!"

Bunta sent out his Pokémon—Infernape, one of the most famous Starter Pokémon in the Sinnoh region, a Fire- and Fighting-type with great strength and potential.

"So you're relying on type counter?" Candice looked at the Froslass before her and said, "Then you've made a big mistake."

Froslass had no legs, floating in the air like its counterpart, Glalie. According to the Pokédex, its body appeared to be hollow, making it surprisingly light.

Its "body" closely resembled a kimono, especially the red sash around its waist, which was similar to a kimono's obi.

"Ghost and Ice-type, huh..." Seeing Froslass, Terrance was surprised. Froslass evolves from Snorunt when exposed to a Dawn Stone. Even without considering its rare Ice/Ghost-type, the evolution conditions alone made it a highly valuable Pokémon.

"This is getting interesting. With that type combination, Ice Vulpix should be able to observe a lot of fascinating tactics."
