Chapter 705: A Calm Darkness (Ch.706)

Darkness...eerie, pitch darkness. The kind where one could hardly see the next step ahead, or even the extent of one’s own limbs if outstretched, it was a darkness that would leave even the night shy, devoid of its conscious tampering by moonlight.

At the completion of the sorcerer’s spell, the daylight was completely consumed, and utter darkness had settled over the previously sun lit Mount Edar,

Much like it had happened with the tune of the storm singers, but this time was different, the storm was centralized around the center of the spell, where Neveah had left Imagor,

It was much calmer away from it and there were no shadow beasts emerging from the darkness, this eerie calm made one all the more wary,

Dark sorcerers were even more lethal than the storm singers and possessed a stronger hold on dark magic, how could the darkness be so quiet away from the storm?

The treacherous slopes of the mountain had become all the more deadly to anyone who traversed it at such a time, this was the most eventful Mount Edar had ever been in almost a century and it was not a favorable event.

Neveah squinted slightly, her gaze narrowed as she still clutched her arm where the red mist had left a burn.

Advanced night vision considered, Neveah still found her sight limited by the sudden and shadowy darkness that lay claim to the mountain and she could not see further ahead than a couple of steps without squinting.

Save for the bolts of red lightning that lit up the sky at intervals, the storm was concentrated way back where Neveah had come from, this far out, they provided just enough lighting for Neveah to navigate the path ahead for a few seconds and nothing longer.

The sudden tumultuous weather was actively dispersing Zephyr’s scent trail and disorienting Neveah’s sense of smell, it was hard to keep focus with the storm raging all around but despite the unfavorable conditions, Neveah knew she was not far from Zephyr now.

There was an array of small caves in the mountain range ahead, Neveah had caught a glimpse of the entrances following the last lightning bolt but there were no defined paths leading up to it.

Much like Xenon’s cave, there was only a steep climb leading up to the cave entrances. Neveah guessed every cave in Mount Edar was quite like this, it was why the mountain was more suitable to beasts of flight than it was to any other.

"He must have flown here upon sighting something that piqued his interest..." Neveah guessed, taking cautious steps further along the sloppy mountain range.

"How did the patrol miss him?" Neveah’s wolf wondered.

"Zephyr is mischievous, no one would be too worried seeing him go by. And with his scales still soft and of a gray shade, camouflage comes easy." Neveah guessed.

"We can make the climb, we only need a little light." Neveah’s wolf thought to her.

Neveah glanced around, she was not even sure where exactly she was. It was clear to her now that she knew even less about the layout of Mount Edar than she had thought, in the days here... Xenon’s cave had been more than the whole world, and those days had not lasted long enough to know more.

The storm was so far away now that the lightning barely reached or provided enough light to brave a climb.

"Magic..." Neveah entertained the thought of tugging back Demevirld now that she needed him.

It would perhaps not be too much interference to conjure up some light and aid her climb, Neveah had avoided reaching for Demevirld even when her own life was endangered, she could afford to suffer some harm but Zephyr’s life hung on the balance.

Neveah knew she could not trust Demevirld’s abilities to show up at the last minute like they usually did, such risk was for her alone, the child did not deserve that.

As Neveah drew closer, another flash of lightning lit up the sky and Neveah got a better look of the steep climb.

Wasting no further time, Neveah found the nearest handhold and began making her way up to the cave.

The climb though short, the rocks were too smooth and slippery and it took effort to get a good grip on any part of it, especially now once again cast into pitch darkness.

"As pretty as a flower, what a man would give to have you..." A low familiar voice hissed by Neveah.

Neveah froze up in shock and horror, her heart beat stilled instantly, a cold chill crept up her spine.

"Fa...Lothaire?" Neveah’s eyes grew wide and in her distraction, her hand slipped and she lost her hold, falling backwards without an attempt to break her fall.

Even so, Neveah’s still stared with wide eyes at the point she had been when she heard that voice, even as her back slammed harshly against the jagged rocks and pitch blackness danced across her vision.

Neveah felt a sharp pain spread across her back, it should have felt more like a piercing pain but instead, Neveah felt the sharp striking pain of a whip and she heard the loud cracking sound.

In this moment, Neveah’s immediate environment had already changed. Instead of the dark forest, Neveah’s senses first picked up on the musty smell of the underground dungeon...but it was not just any dungeon.

The smell of sex and body fluids was thick in the air, especially to Neveah’s sensitive senses and those grunts and mewls of pleasure were especially loud.

"Have I not said it once? If you look away Omega...you get the whip, but she?...well, she gets something else..." Lothaire’s harsh reprimand was the only sound that came right before a warm liquid sprayed all over Neveah’s face.

A pungent metallic smell had joined the already existing stench... the smell of fresh blood.

"Look what your disobedience causes...look!" Lothaire snarled, a hand forcing Neveah’s head in the direction where the omega, still bent over on all fours now had her neck split open and bleeding profusely.
