Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 622: What Is Right ()
~Fort Scabbard
Neveah’s eyes fluttered open slowly, she blinked, taking a moment to let it settle that she had just dream walked.
However, even that moment was interrupted by a quiet sob from her side. Neveah passed a glance over at the quietly sobbing Estelle.
Estelle was yet to notice that Neveah was awake and Neveah stared at her in silence for a moment before she spoke.
"Do not cry, I am not dead yet." Neveah murmured in a hoarse tone.
Estelle’s head jerked up, her gaze settled on Neveah and she immediately began an inquisition.
"Veah! You’re awake! Are you alright? Are you back in control? Shall I get Everon?... Wait, you might not want to see him...but there is no other qualified physician..." Estelle ranted away.
"Woah... woah, Elle. Take a breath first and then speak. Creator knows I won’t be running away." Neveah quickly interrupted Estelle, encouraging her to speak more coherently.
Estelle sucked in a deep breath, her chest visibly rising and then she exhaled slowly before she tried again.
"How do you feel?" Estelle asked in a worried tone.
"After all of that...not nearly as bad as I should." Neveah admitted honestly.
"Do not say that..." Estelle chided in a guilty tone.
"I mean it, Elle. I am fine... I am not in pain or anything like that and yes, I am in control." Neveah reassured Estelle.
Neveah sat up slowly and Estelle was quick to assist her to sit properly with her back leaning against the headboard.
"How long was I out and what have I missed?" Neveah asked when she was comfortable.
"Almost half a day, Veah. And... take a rest first, I will tell you all you need to know in a moment." Estelle hesitated to report the situation of things to Neveah.
Neveah guessed Estelle assumed she had not heard her words while she was asleep and so Estelle was hesitant to break the news about another death to the contagion.
Neveah also needed a moment and so she did not argue with Estelle.
Instead, she quietly watched as Estelle fetched her a cup of water.
"Moisten your throat first, you sounded really hoarse." Estelle said, handing the cup of water over to Neveah.
Neveah took the cup and stared at the contents for a moment, she was just about drinking it when she noticed a strange black strand swirling about in the water.
Neveah paused, the glass cup just as inch away from her lips. Her gaze narrowed slightly as she stared at the water strangely.
"Does Scabbard Tower have no fresh water?" Neveah asked, returning the water to Estelle with a frown.
"What? Is it unclean?" Estelle asked in surprise.
Estelle took the water and stared at it for a moment before she returned a confused gaze to Neveah.
"It looks just fine to me." Estelle pointed out. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
"Do you not see that..." Neveah began to say, glancing over at the glass of water.
However, this time, it was perfectly clear with not even a single impurity in sight. And certainly not the strange object Neveah had seen in it before.
"Well... I... I am not sure. I must still be fatigued..." Neveah said uncertainly.
"I am fine. I do not need water." Neveah still refused the water.
Estelle took the water away, placing it on a side table out of reach before she returned to Neveah’s side.
"Everon... what did he say to make you give your blood?" Neveah asked after a moment of quiet.
Estelle’s eyes widened slightly at Neveah’s choice of question to begin with.
"Well, I was told it would help find the solution to free you of Demevirld’s influence sooner and so I did it. But I am not certain what was said to the other light bloods, seeing as they know nothing about Demevirld..." Estelle confessed honestly.
"I believe the decision to keep it from you is more characteristic of the elders than Everon...he must have been left with little choice in the matter." Estelle added quickly.
Neveah pursed her lips, it did not sit well with her that she was the one who had the least knowledge about the methods Everon and the elders that Jian summoned would use to free her of Demevirld.
And she would appreciate it less if these methods would put others in harm’s way.
"And what is the possibility that rather than a cure, Everon and the elders have only been seeking out a suitable substitute...all along?" Neveah asked Estelle.
It was a question Neveah knew Estelle could not quite answer, it was more rhetorical than it was directed at Estelle.
"I... I do not know, Veah. Uncle Mycroft would not falsify a claim..." Estelle offered her opinion.
"He would not... and be so brazen about it too, if it were not confirmed. Lord Mycroft could figure out the intentions of Everon and the elders that we were all none the wiser too."
"It must be due to a previous occurrence before our time. It seems everyone knows more about my condition than I do...more about what I carry in my own body than I do." Neveah murmured quietly.
"Veah, if that indeed is the only way to be rid of Demevirld... after what I witnessed today, I have to say... I believe it should not be totally off the table."
"You are the Dragon Queen, once that is known, not me alone but there will be no one of the dragon bloodline that would hesitate to take your place...if it means keeping you safe." Estelle stated in a serious tone.
Neveah frowned slightly, she understood Estelle’s words but she just could not reconcile herself with it
"Why am I to be saved and someone else to take my place? What depravity is that?" Neveah asked in displeasure.
"Because your life and well being is now of more consequence than you realise." Estelle pointed out the obvious.
"Elle...as someone who has lived a long time being the dispensable, the easily sacrificed... the one whose life was worth nothing, if there is one thing I have realised...it is that no one’s life should be more important than that of another."
"All lives are important and all lives matter... this is what is right. This is the standard we must live by, that is the world I wish to exist in..." Neveah said with a shake of her head.
