Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 623: Into the City ()
Elle sighed quietly, patting Neveah’s thigh in a gesture of understanding.
"I know your heart, Veah, but there are some things that cannot be changed." Estelle said truthfully.
Neveah pursed her lips but she nodded her head.
"I do understand that...more than you know." Neveah assured.
"Tell me then, with what has just happened, what is the death count already?" Neveah asked as she pushed off the covers.
"Veah, you should get some more rest..." Estelle began to protest but Neveah interrupted her.
"There is no time for rest, Elle. I must return to Dune City as soon as possible. But first, I need to see what this contagion looks like for myself...see the state of things in Scabbard with my own eyes." Neveah said in a dismissing tone.
Neveah reached for her boots and pulled them on, she assumed Estelle had taken them off to enable her rest more comfortably.
"The death count is a little over two dozen, panic is steadily rising and commoners are gathered at the city centre and the gates of the fort, demanding to be let out." Estelle relayed to Neveah.
"The Scabbard dragons are out keeping the situation under control as best as they can at this time...but it will be difficult to prevent the situation from escalating this time around." Estelle admitted in a grim tone.
Neveah nodded in understanding, without implementing any forceful techniques, the Scabbard dragons had already done well enough.
"I will go out into the city and see for myself." Neveah said to Estelle.
"Veah, will it be okay to be out in the city? If Demevirld were to do something like it did with the couple and heal another victim, there will be no way to detach yourself from the situation." Estelle reminded Neveah.
"There is a community of people camping out right outside the gates of Dune City as we speak...I am already too deeply entangled for any hopes to detach myself." Neveah said, securing the ties on her boot.
"Besides, I am no divine healer or whatever it is they believe me to be...but at the least, I will do everything I can to trace the source of this contagion and find a cure."
"Everon is here also, he is the closest thing to a divine healer the stronghold has at the moment. If anyone can cure the contagion, it would be him." Neveah murmured,
Neveah got up to her feet and grabbed her coat, leading the way out of the room.
Standing right outside the door was Tara, and unexpectedly, certainly a face Neveah would never favor seeing but should have expected... Adrienne.
Adrienne leaned against the wall opposite the door to Estelle’s room and she was the first person Neveah set eyes on the moment she stepped out.
"You’re awake...that is a relief." Adrienne said to Neveah.
Neveah blinked, she stared incredulously at the Fae princess for a brief moment, before passing a questioning glance to Tara.
Tara shrugged to indicate she also had no idea what was going on and so Neveah’s gaze moved back to Adrienne.
"Shouldn’t you be with Menarx? Wherever he is?" Neveah asked with a raised brow.
"He and Everon went to see Lord Mycroft. Narx says to tell you to stay away from Lord Scabbard for the time being till they have some concerns resolved... seeing as Lord Mycroft insists on antagonizing you." Adrienne said hesitantly.
"I did not plan to meet with the Lord of Scabbard either, I have had enough of him for one day. However, I will require Everon’s aid... send him my way, I will wait out in the courtyard." Neveah said to Adrienne.
"You are going out into the city?" Adrienne asked.
"I am." Neveah confirmed.
Adrienne nodded slowly, standing up rightly, she stroked the sleeves of her riding suit to even them out before she headed off down the hall.
"I swear, I told her to leave many times but she completely ignored me. I have no idea why she insisted on waiting out here till you woke up when she could have passed Lord Menarx’s message on to me... the two-faced hissy..." Tara cursed in a begrudging tone.
"Tara, she is Lady of Ruby Scales, you will accord her every respect her title affords, and more in Menarx’s honour."
"Do not stir up anything and I will not overlook a slight to Menarx. Let her be... let it all be." Neveah clarified.
"You’ve said it a thousand times already, I know... I know." Tara muttered, though her expression was completely ugly.
Neveah smiled slightly, exchanging a look with Estelle who was also amused by Tara’s expression.
Neveah gestured for Estelle to lead the way and they followed after her.
"Elle will take us into the city once Everon arrives. You are not of Dragon blood Tara, you will keep your distance...we do not know if Asvarian blooded mortals are susceptible to the contagion yet." Neveah said to Tara.
"There has been no records of it so far, but with the death count increasing rapidly, the contagion is spreading much faster. It is best to be careful." Estelle agreed.
Tara nodded in understanding and the three continued through the halls in silence until they arrived at the courtyard below.
Neveah was not surprised to find Everon already stood there, his arms crossed behind his back.
He walked over to Neveah, his gaze inspecting her from head to toe.
"You look well." Everon commented.
"Do not push your luck, Ron. You still have a lot to explain to me, but there will be time for that. For now, there are more pressing matters." Neveah said to Everon, moving past him.
Everon nodded slowly, breathing a sigh of relief as he turned and followed after Neveah.
"Estelle, the autopsy to be performed on the first victim to the contagion, who is in charge of it?" Neveah asked Estelle.
"With the disappearance of her guardians, we were unable to proceed with it. And with agitations rising, claiming the bodies of the deceased has become a difficult endeavour. But I will have someone on it immediately." Estelle assured Neveah.
"You do that, Everon will perform the autopsies himself." Neveah said.
