Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 448: Choices ()
The moment Neveah stepped into King Jian’s quarters, she sensed the Dragon King’s presence but it was sparse, distant, overwhelmed by that of another.
King Jian was not in sight in his study, he must have been somewhere else in his quarters or elsewhere but Neveah could not be bothered,
Her eyes had settled on those swirling pools of pitch black as Xenon lifted his gaze to her from where he sat at King Jian’s desk.
Neveah was caught off guard to find him there and it was already too late to head back out since he had also taken note of her arrival and now stared at her.
For a moment, Neveah just stared in silence and Xenon stared back. What else could they do but stare? There were no words to be said. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
All that should have been said and even things that should not have been said had all been said on the night before everything went downhill.
There had been so much troubles that Neveah had nearly forgotten... that Xenon was noticeably absent from her sight since that night.
’Had she hurt him so badly that he did not dare see her anymore?’ Neveah wondered, a bitter feeling spreading in the pit of her stomach.
"I did not know he was expecting you." Xenon broke the silence first.
Thinking about it now, with how insistent Xenon had been on that night, it was unlike him to leave Neveah to herself for even a moment... even when she had been so badly hurt.
And so Neveah understood what Xenon’s intentions had been for staying away and out of sight. In the end, he did not wish to burden her with his feelings and make things even more harder than they already were.
And Neveah was grateful for that, there was already enough on her mind at this time.
"His Grace is not here at the moment, I will return at another time then." Neveah murmured and made to leave but Xenon stopped her.
"The unified council begins in a few hours, there will not be another time for what he has summoned you for. He will return soon... please take a sit." Xenon offered Neveah.
Xenon got up to his feet and gestured for Neveah to sit at where he had been while he moved over to another sit by the window.
Neveah was standing in the way and Xenon walked by but he stopped when he was about to go past Neveah.
As the wave of Xenon’s scent wafted all around her, Neveah’s breath seized for a brief moment against her will before it resumed to it’s usual pace.
Neveah moved, intent on stepping away as swiftly as she could, she had not anticipated Xenon would stop and they were so close now, side by side with their shoulders almost brushing.
"Stay... I will not come closer." Xenon said, already knowing what Neveah was going to do.
Neveah still took a step back, putting some more distance between them but not as much as she had planned originally.
Xenon breathed a quiet sigh, he did not protest Neveah’s movement any further knowing she would have gone all the way over to another side of the study or taken her leave if she did not wish to listen to him.
Neveah waited patiently to hear what Xenon had to say, she could see the struggle in his eyes as he tried to sort through the words he was going to say.
Xenon had never been good with words, it was precisely because he did not know how to mince words or beat around the bush but only said things exactly as he felt it,
This trait of his made Xenon much more intense than any other man Neveah had known...there were times when this was a good thing and there were other times when it was too overwhelming and hard to handle.
"Are you alright?... Truly?" Xenon finally spoke after carefully choosing his words, his tone laced in concern.
"I..." Neveah began to say she was fine but trailed off, she had never been able to conceal anything from Xenon, as adept as she was at faking a genuine smile, he could always see right through her.
And this time, Neveah dared a look into Xenon’s eyes and she could see in them that he already knew the answer to his question, he knew it better than she did.
"What do you wish to hear?" Neveah replied with a heavy sigh.
"Do you really wish to hear the answer to that question?" Xenon replied with a question of his own.
Neveah pursed her lips, shaking her head slightly. It was not difficult to tell what Xenon wanted to hear from Neveah, he had been quite clear about it already.
"It is hard...to stand on the sidelines and watch this...watch you in the midst of all this, in such pain... and I cannot do anything about it."
"It’s killing me...Veah..." Xenon confessed.
"Xenon... " Neveah breathed a tired sigh.
"Even when you are the center of his world... even when he makes you happier than I could ever hope to, even when I see the place he holds in your heart, I am still not willing to let you go to him... I would never stand for it."
"I do not know how to trust any other heart but mine, I do not know how to be selfless and give up on what I want. The only woman I desire does not want me and it only makes me desire her more... I am just this kind of selfish man."
"For a man like me, how am I supposed to watch you suffer for another man? Just how?" Xenon asked, truly helpless.
"This is my decision, Xenon. This is what I have chosen, I will bear the consequences of my choice... I believe I will not regret it. " Neveah said quietly.
"I know you are hurting, but forgive me Xenon... I will not go to you." Neveah added.
"Yet my decision is still to go to you, Neveah. That is my own choice. You may turn away from me today and as long as you wish it... but I will always be here, waiting for you to take my offered hand." Xenon replied in a quiet but firm tone
