Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 440: It Came ()
King Jian’s expression was dark and indecipherable as he sat at his desk, his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes closed.
Though his expression was impossible to decipher, one could tell from his aura that he was the farthest thing from pleased.
"The Fae have grown too daring, you need not pay them any heed. For things like this, let the boys handle it."
" The presence of the dragon king will only give validity to their accusations...not just anyone gets to seek audience with the king and have it honored as they please." Xenon said from where he stood watching Jian’s bristling anger.
"I do know." Jian murmured in response.
"Yet you are uneasy, My Liege." Xenon pointed out the obvious.
"Perhaps because you are too at ease..." Jian accused, his eyes fluttering open.
"And you have been weirdly calm since you returned... even with everything going on, that is usually my place." Jian continued.
Menarx raised a brow, scoffing beneath his breath.
"Am I? Truly?" Xenon asked blankly.
Jian searched Xenon’s eyes for a moment before he breathed a heavy sigh.
"You’re only like this when you are... terrified." Jian said knowingly.
Xenon was quiet, he did not admit nor deny Jian’s accusation but that in itself was already answer enough.
"You have been dying to go to her, but instead you spent the first half of the day interrogating the culprit... and the next half coddling me, at what point do you get to actually do what you want?" Jian asked directly.
Xenon’s brow twitched slightly, his calm facade dropping for a moment.
It had been a full day and Xenon had not gone an inch close to Neveah’s quarters, even if that was all he wanted to do from the start of the day up till this moment.
He had instead found other ways to occupy himself, so he could remain in close enough proximity even if still far out of reach.
The thought of Neveah in pain, the memory of her covered in her own blood, it had etched itself onto Xenon’s mind, haunting his every thought.
The only thing that kept Xenon sane was that assurance that Neveah would be fine and he knew she would be because he would make it so...no matter what it would cost him.
"I’ve been told I cannot always do as I please." Xenon finally replied to Jian’s question.
"Since when were you one to listen?" Jian asked with a raised brow.
"I do not, unless it’s her...then I am helpless." Xenon grumbled out.
"Seeing you return like this, I finally understand just what place she has in your heart... what lengths you would go for her. Yet I cannot sit here and dare blame her, you all are in a fragile situation." Jian said with a quiet sigh.
"I am aware...why else would I watch the reason Veah was hurt in the first place, guard at her bedside?..." Xenon murmured.
"All I want to do now is rip off a few of his scales so he knows what pain feels like, yet I know there is no pain I can inflict greater than what he inflicts on himself already."
"Menarx that lad, I have known him for centuries, fought by his side and cherished him that long, yet never have I seen him like this before... not even once. The love I see in his eyes is pure, deep and humbling... " Xenon admitted.
"As is yours." Jian pointed out.
"One is my dear brother, the other is my beloved woman... the enemy is fate, who shall I hold responsible? I should be elated... I should feel like perhaps I would have my chance now, but watching them both hurt like this...it is agonizing, Jian." Xenon admitted with a heavy sigh.
"What is worse, I cannot go to her right now without feeling like it would be some form of violation... she made her stance with me quite clear. I do not plan to listen, even so, I cannot take joy in another’s devastation..."
"What has happened is terrible to happen to anyone and the best I can do for both of them is stay out of the way and let them sort through their troubles. What they need most now...is each other." Xenon admitted in a pained tone.
"You are an honorable man, my brother. You always have been. It does my heart good that you have returned to us." Jian asserted, a small, rare smile rested on his lips.
"You have Neveah to thank for that, Jian. Need I remind you the words I said to you when I first set eyes on her?" Xenon asked.
"She is my salvation..." Jian murmured, recalling the exact words Xenon had conveyed through their link, speaking to Jian for the first time in months.
Those very words had moved Jian to travel all the way to wolf territory, something he had never done nor planned to, just to see for himself... what exactly this salvation looked like.
Jian had not expected salvation came in golden blonde and gleaming eyes, in a confident and fiery personality, in quick wits and a sharp tongue, in unyielding will and unbending knees.
And so Jian admitted, he had never understood it, neither could he accept it. It was just another foxy woman, she clearly spelled trouble and Jian always wondered why it seemed he was the only one who could see it.
And she did bring trouble, all day... everyday, many enough times to prove Jian had been right, but perhaps not entirely so.
It was only now, over a year after that it made sense to Jian. It was only now staring at Xenon perfectly sober like this, even without Neveah by his side,
Only now did Jian truly become a believer.
Salvation may not have come in a form Jian could comprehend, but it had come either ways. In all it’s stubborn, hotheaded glory, it came and did what it was meant to...it saved, it saved without fail.
And in turn, Jian vowed to himself that he would save her... for as long as he lived, he would repay this debt of gratitude even if he would never actually admit it.
