Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 439: Trouble Arrives ()
How did one’s subconscious take it’s form? Was it always a void of darkness and barrenness with not a single thing in sight? Or was it just for Neveah?
How different was the subconscious world from person to person? Was it a representation of character? Personality? Past experiences? Or did it just not matter?
Neveah had not thought much of it till this time, not even when she was so familiar with this world of darkness within her mind where her consciousness would always end up, far too often than anyone else could boast of.
Most of the times swallowed up in this darkness, Neveah was unaware.
Her consciousness completely overwhelmed by the darkness, but this time, Neveah was wide awake and alert, locked up in her own mind with nothing for company but her own agony, her thoughts and the words said all around her.
Neveah was not sure why this time was different, why she was completely aware of her environment and could hear everything, the panicked yells, the diagnosis, Menarx’s dismay, Cassian’s report, she could hear it all.
The one time she would much rather have remained in oblivion, knowing nothing...of course nothing ever went her way.
Neveah sat in the midst of the darkness, her knees were drawn up to her chest and her forehead was laid down on her knees, her face hidden away, or at least that was the scene Neveah’s subconscious mind conjured up.
"Menarx, you have been by Veah’s bedside for a full day now. You need to get some rest, I will look after her in your stead." Lady Kaliana voice reached Neveah, offering to relieve Menarx of his watch.
"I’m fine." Was Menarx’s only response, the very same he had given to everyone else who had showed concern for his well being.
Neveah could sense his devastation, she could hear the self loathing in his tone and it was all the more agonizing because there was nothing she could do to ease his pain.
How could she help Menarx when she could not even ease her own pain?
Whatever this was, whatever madness had unveiled itself in the grand hall, this absurd reality Neveah was yet to come to terms with, it was unfair to them both...they did not deserve this.
The torment from Menarx’s scale had subsided to an extent, though there was still a numb ache that just would not go away.
Neveah was not certain she wanted to wake up, the moment she did, everything would become all the more real.
How was she supposed to confront the reality that Menarx’s fated was Adrienne and she was nothing but a fake? A replacement?
Even if she did want to wake up, she did not know how, neither did she have the energy or will to seek a way out of her mind’s prison.
A quiet growl reached Neveah and she slowly glanced up, finding a much smaller version of her wolf staring at her.
"Hey there..." Neveah murmured in greeting, she had forgotten for a moment that her mind did not only belong to her, it was equally occupied by another existence.
Neveah’s wolf watched her in silence for a moment, a complicated gaze in her gleaming eyes and then she moved closer, sitting by Neveah’s side.
"I had forgotten for a moment that I could never truly be alone. You and I are all we have now...as it always was, as it was meant to be." Neveah murmured, stroking her wolf’s fur with a small smile.
Another quiet growl sounded from Neveah’s wolf and she nudged Neveah lightly with her head.
"You are right... there is still Kaideon." Neveah nodded in agreement.
"Go back now. It has already been a day, you can’t stay in here forever... hiding away doesn’t change what has happened. Go out and face it, like we always have." Neveah’s wolf finally spoke through their bond.
Neveah breathed a quiet sigh but nodded in agreement.
______________
"Lord Menarx!" Estelle’s panicked voice sounded as she shoved open the door and barged into Menarx’s quarters.
Menarx’s fierce gaze met her from where he sat by Neveah’s bed side, a deadly look in his eyes.
"Forgive my entrance, my lord but you must come quickly! Dante and I were just returning from fetching the herbs Lord Everon requested and witnessed dozens of Fae magic portals opening beneath the mountain! A battalion of Fae soldiers lead by the Fae royal council are headed for the Keep!" Estelle reported.
"The Fae council leads soldiers to Dragon territory? Do they have a death wish?" Menarx asked with a frown.
"The unified council has also been convened by the Fae royal council, they are currently in the grand hall demanding His Grace’s audience!"
"The Fae council on their part demand an audience with Lady Neveah! Lords Cassian, Imagor and Dante have headed down the mountain with the sixth squadron to stop them!" Estelle reported in a rush.
"What do they want with Neveah?" Menarx asked with narrowed eyes.
"They...they are accusing her of intentionally seeking to harm a Fae princess by refusing to surrender the bond!" Estelle revealed in dismay. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
"What?!" Menarx hissed.
"Rumours have spread all around the stronghold! Word has it that My lord’s scale can cure the fairy princess, Adrienne! Now they seek to demand My Lord honours the true bond! They insist Veah must surrender the scale so it can be bestowed to Adrienne!" Estelle revealed grimly.
"They are courting death!" Menarx hissed in rage, rising up to his feet, he glanced over at Neveah, a pained look in his eyes.
"Stay with her, do not move an inch away from her side. I will send Dante here, whoever seeks to meet Veah...kill on sight." Menarx instructed before he stormed out of his quarters.
Estelle hurried over to Neveah’s bedside, taking a seat, she grabbed onto Neveah’s hand, holding tightly.
"Veah...do not worry, we won’t let anything go wrong." Estelle reassured, wiping the perspiration of Neveah’s forehead with her sleeve.
