Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 121: Herbal Assistant ()
A quiet sigh of relief escaped Neveah’s lips as she stored aside the final vial of Lord Everon’s healing poultice, prepared especially for the dragon riders.
Finally, after almost an entire hour had passed, she was done preparing the poultice as Lord Everon instructed, she had also stored it away where the heated mixture would cool and congeal.
Neveah placed it on a rack closer to the window so the air could cool it naturally as Lord Everon instructed.
It was already annoying enough that just as Lord Everon had said, Neveah did remember all she watched him doing without him teaching it to her in person and she could at least attempt to replicate his actions.
First, Lord Everon extracted the poison within the icid root, storing that away before he extracted the sap within through a completely different process from the first extraction.
The reason for this was just so that the poisonous content of the icid root would not be mixed up in the sap if he just made a direct extraction.
Though icid roots were not rare, they were difficult to harvest and so each root wasted for the cause of failing the extraction process was just added workload for the herb gatherer who fetched Lord Everon’s herbs.
Neveah paid close attention through both processes to ensure she got it right after a single try,
Back in the Eclipse palace, when she was forced to concoct antidotes to neutralize the poison in her bloodstream in secret, she barely had a passable amount of herbs available.
All she would have were those she gathered herself or stole away from the hall of Omega healers, she could not ask for herbs directly, in such a case, she would have to explain what the Eclipse princess needed with herbs.
A question she did not wish to be asked since she did not have an answer to it, telling on her step mother was the surest way to meet a gruesome death in either of three ways... namely Alessio, Alpha King Lothaire or Alpha Queen Vilma herself.
Neveah knew her own situation well enough and so whenever she was in need of herbs, she could only steal it away from the hall of Omega healers and steal away a quantity that would not be easily noticed.
At such times, there was no room for error, even when perspiration beaded on Neveah’s forehead and her skin turned snowy white from the poison in her blood stream, or her veins turned black and her hands trembled,
Even then, she still had to get the antidote right on the first try... because there would not be a second chance.
Neveah learned to be precise in all she did right from childhood, Lord Everon had once said Neveah was a genius... Neveah laughed bitterly at the memory.
’They know nothing...’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her in a dark tone and Neveah agreed, they truly knew nothing.
She was no genius... she was just someone who wanted to live, to live... she had learned the only way was to rely on her own abilities, Neveah was not born a genius... she became one to survive.
It took Neveah quite sometime to grow familiar to the extraction process of the icid root initially,
Of course her trials and errors were only done mentally, picturing the result she would get in each instance without actually touching the herb.
But eventually, she was able to do it in the right manner and secured the same result as Lord Everon.
After expending so much time and effort, as well as putting so much focus into it, it was only then Neveah recalled Menarx’s words and realized that Menarx was right, Lord Everon was slowly but surely turning Neveah into his herbal assistant.
He did it in such a subtle way that one would not even take notice of his intent, but with each day that passed by, he entrusted even more and more important tasks to Neveah, and Neveah did not see him treating anyone else in such a manner.
"That sneaky...sly dragon." Neveah grumbled beneath her breath, making a mental note to chide Lord Everon over his intents and remind him that she already had so much work on her plate, she did not need anymore added to it.
At this point, Neveah was almost late to pick up Lord Xenon’s laundered clothes but she still set the work table in order, ensuring all the herbs were shelved properly.
Neveah was someone who was obsessed with orderliness, she could never bear the sight of Lord Everon’s work table with hundreds of herbs mixed up together that would later require sorting from an experienced hand.
Of course, in the past week, the first choice to entrust such duties was Neveah and Neveah was not certain if it was that Lord Everon trusted her,
However that was truly hard to believe considering Lord Everon barely knew anything of her, Neveah knew it was only that he had a much easier personality than the other dragon lords Neveah had met.
He did not have a preconceived notion about her but judged her based on what he had seen of her so far.
"They are all dragons, but each is so different from the other...it is intriguing." Neveah murmured to herself as she took off the gloves she wore, she was already done with all Lord Everon had entrusted to her and it was time to take her leave.
Neveah glanced over Lord Everon’s personal study once more, ensuring everything was in order before she headed away.
It took a short walk getting past all the other storage halls before Lord Everon’s study but eventually, Neveah stepped out, coming to a halt when she was once again greeted with fifteen gazes...or sixteen, if the royal healer who guided the trainees was counted.
Neveah hissed inaudibly, ever since her encounter with the fairy, Lady Adrienne at the bridge, Neveah had done her very best to avoid them and stay out of their sight on Davina’s instructions.
If it was left to Neveah alone, she was already curious to know... between a werewolf and a fairy, who would emerge victorious in a battle to the death?
Neveah was someone who had endured so much injustice already, if she had anything to do with it, she would not let anyone step over her ever again.
But Davina reminded Neveah repeatedly that to survive in the Dragon Keep, she needed to learn to keep her head low, everyone she met within the Keep was not of an easy status.
For instance, there was Lady Adrienne... fairy royalty, young niece or the fairy king and younger sister to Lord Lodenworth’s rider.
Lords Decaron and Lodenworth, in the past week, Neveah had seen both revered dragon lords from a distance and Davina had reminded her again after their heads could finally be lifted from the deep bow.
’There are only a few that can be considered to be the trusted aides of the dragon king...the King’s Guard come first above all, and right after them was the Chief Royal Guard, Lord Decaron and Lord of the City Guard, Lord Lodenworth." Davina had said.
"This Lord Lodenworth was not an easy man, even the least of the lord dragons is highly respected and treasured by the dragon king...in Asvar, the Asvarian beasts are gods... and then those at the very peak of nobility like Lord Lodenworth...you do not want to get on his bad side." Davina had warned Neveah in a serious tone.
At that time, Neveah could not understand how she could get on the bad side of a Lord dragon she had only caught a glimpse of his dark green scales from afar while he was in flight... Davina’s response explained it all.
"The easiest way to get on the bad side of a Lord dragon is to displease his rider... the lady Keila, it is known she cherishes her little sister like her own child... that little sister is Lady Adrienne and Lady Keila wears the crest of Lodenworth’s rider and beloved wife." Davina revealed to Neveah then.
That was all that was needed for Neveah to understand the situation and take Davina’s advice, if you cannot stay low...then stay away.
For seven days straight, Neveah had taken cautious action not to cross paths with Lady Adrienne and her lackeys...it was a tasking endeavor but Neveah made it work. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
The group of annoying females did not dare get close to Xenon’s bridge knowing he would be there,
All Neveah had to do was avoid them within the walls of the keep itself and Neveah made it work by leaving long before anyone awakened and arriving late enough that the noble ladies would be at dinner.
She took her meals within the comfort of her room and only visited Lord Everon when she was certain Lady Adrienne was away at the healer’s academy and so far, Neveah had been successful.
But in this moment, as Neveah’s eyes moved over the fifteen trainee healers awaiting the royal healer who would guide them today, her eyes settled on a pair of familiar pair honey brown orbs, accompanied by an innocently beautiful visage and Neveah knew she had run out of luck.
