Chapter 120: Summoned (Ch.120)

"Lord Everon." Neveah greeted, lowering her head into a small bow.

The royal healer glanced up at Neveah, his gaze regarding her for a moment and then Menarx who came in after.

"Well, this is a rather interesting arrangement." Lord Everon commented as he glanced between Menarx and Neveah quizzically.

Neveah was not certain what the look in Lord Everon’s gaze meant and so she said nothing in response, she just stood, quietly staring at him and awaiting his words.

"I told Neveah you sent for her." Menarx broke the silence.

"I did?" Lord Everon asked with a raised brow but Menarx’s cross glare had him adjusting his words.

"I mean, yes...yes I did." Lord Everon said, clearing his throat as he beckoned on Neveah to move closer before he resumed his tinkering.

Neveah moved over to Lord Everon, still maintaining a reasonable distance away from him but close enough that she could see what he was up to.

For the past week, Neveah visited Lord Everon every morning for her tonic and if Neveah was being honest, it was the part of her day that she enjoyed the most.

Lord Everon’s healer hall was filled with the most wonderful things, items Neveah had never seen before and each time, Lord Everon would feed her curiosity,

He would tell her all she needed to know of one of the rare items on his shelf of her choosing, the healing properties it had and why it earned a place on his shelf.

As the royal healer, every item stored away in Lord Everon’s hall had some kind of health benefit or the other,

Neveah who had only known of herbs to have health benefits always found it intriguing that there were other things such as horns, rocks, internal organs of some rare beasts and animals and even body fluids.

"You always have that look when you come into my hall, like I am the most wondrous existence you have ever seen." Lord Everon pointed out, he knew the look on Neveah’s face without even glancing her way.

"Is it that obvious?" Neveah grumbled and Lord Everon chuckled quietly.

It was only a week in the Dragon Keep and Neveah found Lord Everon was the only person she was willing to hold a casual conversation with.

Neveah guessed it was because they shared similar interests, initially, Neveah believed how she had come to be interested in the healing arts was out of desperation,

Desperation to live through each day when she was being served one poison or the next by the Alpha Queen and her lackey, the Governess.

It was only now Neveah realized she had grown too accustomed to it, too accustomed to researching herbs and healing methods that whenever there was a mention of it, she was just eager to hear more.

It was the only thing that caught Neveah’s fancy in this dragon keep and for whatever reason, Lord Everon was willing to indulge her, 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

It was why she looked forward to the morning hours when she had a short time to spare under the guise of her daily tonic.

It only took a short time for Neveah and Lord Everon to gain an understanding, Lord Everon never pushed Neveah’s boundaries or demanded worship from her and just like that, they had formed a sort of bond.

Lord Everon was always eager to impact knowledge and Neveah was just as eager to learn from him,

Lord Everon’s eccentric personality also would not let him take into consideration that Neveah was the least favored person in the dragon’s keep.

"Not exactly, your expression is always blank and reveals no emotions, I was just fishing and you confessed to it." Lord Everon said, feeling mighty proud of himself.

"How brilliant." Neveah replied in a low tone, sarcasm lining her words but Lord Everon still accepted it.

"You need not be so direct about your appreciation of me." Lord Everon said with a dismissive wave of his hand.

"That’s not..." Neveah began to argue but was interrupted by Menarx who had been watching the exchange quietly.

"Do not waste your breath, Everon is usually unreasonable." Menarx advised, earning himself a glare from Lord Everon.

Neveah still could not come to terms with the fact that Lord Everon and Menarx were blood related cousins, their personalities and disposition were much too different.

While Lord Everon was easy going and even playful in nature, Menarx was overly serious and had an extremely unpleasant personality, but the two somehow got along just fine despite their differences.

"Neveah is welcomed...as for you, I have no idea what you are doing in my hall." Lord Everon said to Menarx with a glare before he moved his gaze to Neveah.

"He intends to turn you into his herbal assistant...my advice, don’t let him." Menarx chipped in before Lord Everon could speak.

"One more word Mernax... just one more and the healer hall is off limits to you." Lord Everon threatened,

"Don’t just stand there, fetch the ingredients for your tonic and set it to boil, afterwards, come right over and help me out with this."

"There should be a short time left before you are expected to be on your way." Lord Everon instructed, passing a final glare to Menarx.

"Right." Neveah said with a nod as she headed over to the shelves and pulled out the herbs Lord Everon had shown to her on her previous visits.

She had watched the process of preparing her tonic quite a few times and so it did not take her too long to have the herbs ready to boil and set them on the heating slab.

Neveah returned to Lord Everon’s side and he immediately pushed a tray of herbs over to her to sort through.

"Lodenbar roots and icid roots are all mixed up together, I need the icid roots alone, set aside lodenbar roots and return them to their place on the shelf." Lord Everon instructed.

"The bark of icid roots are poisonous to touch, are you trying to get me killed?" Neveah asked with a frown.

"Right, werewolf fragility...there should be a set of tongs over there and a pair of gloves for extra protection." Lord Everon said.

"And you... make yourself useful or be on your way." Lord Everon added, glaring at Menarx.

Neveah followed his direction and picked up the items, before she got to work sorting through the herbs.

It was just a short time after the crack of dawn and Neveah knew she would need the daylight bright enough to get across the rickety bridge.

It was not so hard of an endeavor, not when Neveah knew Xenon would be on the other end of the bridge... waiting for her to make the crossing.

For the past week, no day had passed that she did not find Xenon standing on the other side of the bridge, somehow, he knew exactly when Neveah would arrive mount Edar, as though he could sense her long before her arrival.

"What is that strange look on your face?" Lord Everon’s voice drew Neveah out of her thoughts and she cleared her throat, focusing her attention on sorting through the herbs.

"I have no idea what you are talking about." Neveah murmured in response.

"Oh?" Lord Everon asked with a raised brow before he returned his attention to the tonic he was brewing.

They continued in silence, Menarx still stood off to the side, his eyes firmly shut in meditation.

A few minutes passed by before Menarx’s eyes snapped open.

"Everon...Our Liege summons." Menarx said, his voice was back to his clipped and firm tone and Lord Everon paused in his actions.

It took only a gaze at Menarx’s expression for Lord Everon to place aside his herb tray.

"He is well?" Lord Everon asked quickly as he took off the outer coat he wore.

"The council is summoned, Our Liege speaks of Kaideon and the dune dragons." Menarx explained.

"The council? Dune lord and his dune dragons? What tempestous wind blows our way?" Lord Everon asked in a thoughtful tone as he threw on a new coat.

"Let us leave." Lord Everon said to Menarx but paused when he recalled Neveah’s presence.

"Right, Neveah...you know your way about the hall so get your tonic ready and make sure to take it as prescribed." Lord Everon instructed.

"Afterwards, I can leave?" Neveah asked for clarification and Lord Everon scoffed.

"Not a chance. I’m sure you took note of the method to prepare the icid poultice?" Lord Everon asked and Neveah shook her head quickly.

"You never forget anything you have seen even once... do you think I do not know that?" Lord Everon asked and Neveah pursed her lips.

"I have to get about my duties, Lord Everon." Neveah reminded.

"Good then, you had best get started soon. I need three icid poultices ready to be delivered to the riders by noon. I believe in you." Lord Everon said, patting Neveah’s shoulder before he headed away with Menarx.
