Chapter 166 - 166: Successfully Breaking Through

The Ame-nin Jōnin trapped under the genjutsu's influence immediately froze, his expression going blank. He was already caught.

"Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique!"

Uchiha Raiden exhaled a massive fireball, launching it straight at the immobilized Ame-nin.

With his body paralyzed by the illusion and no time for his comrades to intervene, he had no way to defend himself. The fireball engulfed him completely, reducing him to charred remains before he could even let out a scream.

Fighting an Uchiha was always a dangerous gamble—once trapped in a genjutsu, death was almost inevitable. The only way to survive was to have a swift and capable ally nearby, but even then, the chances of escape were slim.

With one Jōnin down, Raiden's burden lightened considerably, making it even easier for him to deal with the remaining three Ame-nin Jōnin. Under his relentless assault, the trio quickly found themselves overwhelmed, barely able to hold their ground.

"Stop attacking the iron mountain! Focus your attacks on the Uchiha elite Jōnin!"

A high-ranking Ame-nin Jōnin stationed atop the town walls barked out orders the moment he saw one of their comrades fall.

Jiraiya's summoning—a massive toad—had endured a relentless bombardment from the mechanical cannons, but despite sustaining deep craters and damage, the toad had yet to collapse completely.

There was no point in continuing that attack. Instead, they had to focus on suppressing Uchiha Raiden. If they failed to hold him back, their defensive formations would be destroyed, and the consequences would be disastrous.

A barrage of chakra-infused artillery shells rained down toward Raiden.

A burly Akimichi clan Jōnin roared as he swung his massive palm at the incoming shells. They exploded upon impact, but even with the Akimichi clan's formidable durability, his hand was torn open, blood spilling freely. The sheer force of the blasts pushed his massive frame back several steps before he managed to regain his footing.

A Nara clan Jōnin, observing from a distance, quickly ordered the Akimichi to intercept the artillery fire, ensuring that Raiden wouldn't be interrupted.

The destruction of the formation surrounding the town walls was crucial.

The Ame-nin forces were skilled, but against Konoha's elite, they were struggling to maintain their defenses. The chakra cannons had already claimed over fifty Konoha shinobi, including several veteran Chūnin. As the battle raged on, Konoha's casualties neared a hundred, while the Ame-nin had lost very few in comparison.

Due to the elevated position of the Ame-nin defenders, most of Konoha's jutsu were either blocked by the walls or missed their targets entirely. And with the battle still in its early stages, the Ame-nin were holding firm, keeping Konoha's forces pinned down with relentless firepower.

If Konoha wanted to turn the tide, they had to dismantle the formations surrounding the walls. Once those barriers were broken, Earth Release users could freely manipulate the terrain, creating pathways for their forces to charge the stronghold. Raising a six-meter earthen rampart was simple for skilled Earth Release users, and with that, Konoha's shinobi would be able to breach the walls with ease.

Behind the battlefield, Konoha's own mechanical cannons had finally been assembled. Under the control of elite Chūnin, a series of chakra-infused artillery shells were launched toward Tetsuishi Town. However, with only a limited number of cannons available, their attacks were not as overwhelming as they needed to be. Before the shells could reach the walls, Ame-nin shinobi intercepted them with counter-jutsu, neutralizing much of the damage.

Even so, their intervention meant fewer Ame-nin were available to suppress Konoha's frontline forces. The pressure on Konoha's shinobi lessened significantly as a result.

"Aghhh!"

A piercing scream echoed through the battlefield.

Among the three remaining Ame-nin Jōnin fighting Raiden, one suddenly had both legs severed in a clean, precise strike. He collapsed to the ground, instantly losing the ability to fight.

The other two Jōnin exchanged glances before immediately retreating, abandoning their fallen comrade without hesitation.

It wasn't a matter of ruthlessness—it was survival.

Even if they tried to help, they lacked the strength to turn the tide against Raiden. If they stayed any longer, they would only die alongside him.

Now that they could no longer restrain Raiden, they had lost the ability to protect the formation surrounding Tetsuishi Town.

As the two Jōnin retreated, Raiden flicked a shuriken, the spinning blade piercing the skull of the crippled Ame-nin, ending his suffering in an instant.

Without any further distractions, Raiden turned his attention to the barrier formations, igniting his Fire Release to destroy them one by one.

...

"The Konoha elite are too many. There's no way we can protect the barrier formations by ourselves."

Back on the walls, one of the retreating Ame-nin Jōnin scowled.

"If the formations are destroyed, Konoha's shinobi will flood into the town. We won't be able to keep them out."

Another Jōnin let out a frustrated sigh.

Realistically, they had known from the start that keeping Konoha's forces outside the town was nearly impossible.

"If they break in, we'll lose a significant advantage."

"But as long as Ryūgen-sama defeats Jiraiya and forces Konoha's shinobi back, we can still reclaim control."

The Ame-nin Jōnin glanced toward the battle between the high-level combatants, knowing that the true outcome of this war depended on their victories.

If their strongest warriors prevailed, everything could still be salvaged.

But if they lost...

Tetsuishi Town would fall.

And in that case, their only option would be a final, desperate strategy—one that would ensure both sides suffered total devastation.

With no further interruptions, Raiden swiftly dismantled the barriers drawn around the town walls.

Large portions of the formation collapsed, losing their effect entirely.

"Cover the Earth Release users! This area is now clear for them to operate!"

Raiden called out to a nearby Akimichi Jōnin.

The Akimichi nodded and immediately moved to shield the arriving Konoha shinobi, who specialized in Earth Release techniques.
