Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 482 Start of the Mission
"We’re clear to go."
The moment Jasmine said this, Avery Used the Dauntless’ controls to lift it off of the ground and fly into the main part of the Intrepid’s hangar.
From there he exited the carrier ship out into space.
There were now only a few minutes until the operation to kill some of the commander type monsters began.
Avery had volunteered to go first as a lure for attracting the monster horde’s attention.
He was the one that had initially come up with the idea, and he was certain that he could get the giant monsters to focus on him.
After what he did to one of them, they all saw him as a giant threat to be eradicated. He knew that much from the way that they had acted.
No doubt if he showed up again in front of them, that all five would focus their forces on him.
Of course, he was not alone in the Dauntless this time.
"The controls are really nice in here. They’re really easy to get used to. Storren Corp. did a good job here." Liesel said while fiddling around with the devices at her station.
With this being her first time as part of the Dauntless’ crew, she had been given control over just one thing, the stern scatterguns.
She had solid judgment, and against an endless stream of enemies, accuracy was unlikely to be a problem. What would be really important was using the weapon at the right time.
As for the rest of the weapon systems, Avery was leaving them in Kasandra’s hands.
Her combat experience and familiarity with the Dauntless made her the best option for this role.
It may have been several months now since she was his copilot, but she was still comfortable operating the ship.
As for Jasmine, she was sticking to what she usually did.
She would handle activating shield cells when it was necessary, keep up with communications, and watch over the long-range sensors.
Normally she would also deploy flares, chaffs, and decoy beacons, but those items were not going to be of any use against their opponents this time.
"You looked like a bundle of nerves last time I saw you. But now you’re oddly calm. I’d say that your even confident that we’ll get through this." Kasandra said.
With her heightened hearing, she could typically get a general feel for what sort of mood people were in.
It had been a bit harder to do so with Avery after his augmentations since he now had a second smaller heart, but she thought that she could still get a good read on him.
When she, Jasmine, and Liesel insisted on coming with him for this mission, it had sent him pretty much into a panic.
Like normal, he was willing to take on any risk, but the moment someone else tried to share the burden with him, he started to grow uneasy.
Kasandra understood why. Having the people you love in situations where they could end up dead in a single moment was difficult to stomach.
It was only natural to want to stop the person from doing something like that, and if that was not possible, to help them at least.
That was why Kasandra, Jasmine, and Liesel were here with Avery.
To assist him in any way that they could, and to serve as deterrents so that he did not do anything too reckless.
While he was willing to gamble with his own life on the line, he was not going to do the same with the three of theirs.
Kasandra already knew that he would do whatever it took to make sure that they all made it out of this in one piece.
That’s why she expected him to be at least a bit anxious.
Yet from all she could tell, he was perfectly calm.
"Figures you’d notice. Yeah, I did some... introspection last night since I couldn’t sleep. I managed to figure something out."
"On another note, when we get back, could you remind me to have a maintenance team come to my room. I accidentally broke most the appliances in my room. Including the lights. The only thing still working is the shower."
Kasandra titled her head in confusion and stared blankly at Avery as he said this.
She had no idea how his "introspection" could have caused damage to things in his room.
Jasmine and Liesel, who were both listening in, also wore befuddled expressions.
Avery was not a particularly violent person.
He was good at fighting, that was for sure, but he did not revel in bloodlust and destruction. Violence was usually just a means to an end for him.
None of them thought that he would have been so emotional as to destroy his room to vent his frustrations.
"You’ll all probably fine out soon. Let’s just say, I’ve got a new hidden ace up my sleeves." Avery said, his lips turned up into a smug grin.
He did not elaborate further and just kept on smiling. As if he was the only one in on a joke that he was waiting to reveal.
Obviously, his three companions wondered what he was talking about, but they could tell that they were not going to get anything out of him.
Nevertheless, his confidence was almost infectious.
If Avery was acting this way, then he must have really had something special prepared.
His partners all trusted him, so they just focused on what it was that they could do.
The few minutes that they had before it was time to begin went by quickly.
Soon there were only a few seconds left and Jasmine initiated the Dauntless’ light speed drive.
They would be using a quick jump to reach where the space monsters were gathering.
Then all hell was going to break loose as nearly a million deadly creatures came charging towards them.
"There’s even more of them now than before. Where are they all coming from? I’ve never even heard of a system being this infested by space monsters unless its energy lifeforms." Liesel said, shuddering at the sight of horde displayed on the view screen.
It certainly was not natural for a single system to have so many space monsters and those different types populating it. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Of course, there was nothing natural about what was going on in this place.
"A few more really won’t make much of a difference. After they exceeded a hundred thousand, we didn’t stand much of a chance in a normal confrontation to begin with. We’ve just got to lead them around by the nose for a while and make an opening for Victoria to strike at the leaders"
"Now, how about we get their attention."
Avery closed his eyes for a moment, and when he reopened them, they were glowing faintly.
He had opened up his mind and was letting his presence be known.
The commander types had been able to lock onto him before, so he figured that they could do it again.
Fortunately, his plan worked and Avery soon felt a sudden rush of hostility wash over him.
The creatures certainly remembered him, and this time they were not going to let him go.
’They aren’t trying to connect with me and take over my mind this time. I was kind of worried about that. Now that I know what to do, I could fend them off, but it would definitely take up most of my attention.’
That was the one thing Avery had been worried about, but if he did receive another psychic attack, he planned on handing full control over to Kasandra and trying to strike back like he had before.
It seemed that the commanders type monsters were smart enough to not attempt something that had ended in utter failure before.
Instead, as predicted, they mobilized the immense forces under their control to crush Avery.
Now that he had their attention, Avery turned the Dauntless around and started running away.
There was no way that he could fight that many space monsters.
Thankfully all he needed to do was become a distraction and thin out their ranks.
"We’ve got some Fluem coming up on us quickly. Liesel, get ready to hit them when they get in range." Jasmine said.
She was keeping an eye on everything with the Dauntless’ long-range sensors.
Being the fastest of all of the different species, it was only natural that the Fluem were the first to catch up.
However, they moved by catching solar winds with wide and thin wings.
That meant that by choosing areas where the solar winds were less prominent or more chaotic, Avery could slow down the Fluem or make them take different paths entirely.
They were not the only ones coming though.
The other four species were all rushing towards the Dauntless like a multicolored tide.
It was not long before several of them had closed in on Avery’s vessel and began pelting it with attacks.
’Some of them are close enough now. It’s time to see if my new trick works on them like I think it should.’
