Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 483 Avery’s New Ability
Avery expanded his perception and homed in on the strands of sickly energy that connected to each of the space monsters.
While there might not have been anyone else in the entire galaxy that could visualize this, Avery knew that this was how the commander type monsters used their psychic bonds to control the other species.
'I wonder what will happen when the connection gets severed.'
Avery reached out towards the nearest space monster which just so happened to be a Volmargar that was trying to cut off the path in front of him.
Its giant body encompassed most of the Dauntless' viewscreen as the creature got closer.
Having fought hundreds of the same type of species before, everyone onboard recognized that its movements indicated that it was about to spew out the flammable liquid stored inside of its body.
However, just before the Volmargar could use its signature attack, Avery imagined a small but unbelievably sharp blade cutting throw the strand of energy linking it to the commander that controlled it.
There was some resistance to Avery's attack, but the bond was sliced through. Breaking the connection the Volmargar had to its leader.
The results were immediate.
No longer having its mind manipulated, the enormous space monster began acting solely on its own instincts.
Of course, this did not change its hostility towards the Dauntless, but now it was only saw members of its own species as allies. The other four types were enemies just the same as Avery's ship.
Knowing this, Avery twisted the Dauntless around and let momentum carry him under the Volmargar.
His vessel was now out of the giant space monster's view and facing the horde of mostly Fluem that had been chasing behind him.
Naturally, they kept flying forward without slowing down.
In their minds, every space monster in the system was their allies. The Volmargar should help them with destroying their sole enemy.
Except, this assumption no longer held true.
From the Volmargar's point of view, a swarm of dangerous creatures were aggressively flying towards it.
Obviously, it had not forgotten about the Dauntless that was hiding under it, but the small ship seemed like a minor threat compared to what was charging towards it.
Incendiary liquid sprayed out of the monsters body and flew at high speed towards the incoming Fluem.
Before they realized what was going on the spark had been lit.
The ultra hot flames only lasted for a couple of seconds before the fuel had been exhausted, but that was enough.
All of the Fluem that had been in the path of the attack had been incinerated and killed.
"That worked better than I thought it would. When they fight amongst each other, they really can do some damage." Avery said, wearing a satisfied smile.
The new power he had discovered allowed him to go beyond perceiving the flow of energy.
Now if he focused, it was possible for him to cut through it and severe the flow.
When he had first awakened this new power, it had gone a bit out of control. Destroying nearly all of the electrical devices in his room.
That had ended up being a widespread, uncontrolled burst. Which was not exactly what he had been looking for.
Luckily, with a bit of practice, he had figured out how to hone the ability and target only what he wanted.
Still, the range was limited to only around six kilometers away, and the stronger the source of energy, and the further away it was, the harder it was to sever.
Avery had thought that this would be something he could use against other ships as well, but it turned out to be more difficult than he thought.
His own energy could not just slip past shields.
Whenever he tried to reach out towards the systems beyond the protective field, he always felt something stopping him.
Of course, he tried cutting through the shields themselves.
Sadly, this only caused some minor damage from what he had seen during the tests he did on one of the shuttles in the Intrepid's hangar.
With the amount of concertation it took to utilize his new ability and how close he had to be, it was not practical to use during ship-to-ship combat.
Nevertheless, Avery was still in the experimental stage with the ability, and he was certain that it would have plenty of other uses. It was quite a versatile power.
Fow now though, he was going to be focusing it on the current threats coming after him.
What made the space monsters in this system so dangerous was their unity. With his ability to turn this on its head, Avery was uniquely capable of handling the basically unfathomable number of space monsters by himself.
Having confirmed that his power worked, Avery flew around and began severing the bond between every space monster and their commanders that came within six kilometers of him.
At first it looked like the Dauntless was going to be overwhelmed by an ever-growing mass of creatures, but before that happened, they began turning against each other.
"Avery, are you doing this?!"
Jasmine voiced what all three of Avery's partners were wondering.
In all of their time in this system, none of them had seen any of the different types of space monsters fighting amongst each other.
Except now, there were hundreds that were tearing into their allies that still remained passive against them.
The ones that were still connected were following the orders they had received not to harm any of the other types of space monsters.
Naturally, this meant that could not fight back against the rouge ones that Avery had freed from being controlled.
This made the battle entirely one-sided.
Every monster that was no longer connected fought viciously against members of the other four species.
"Yep, this is all thanks to the new power I figured out last night. Or maybe it's better to say that it's a more advanced application of the ability I already have. I'm not completely sure. What I do know, is that it works wonders against our current opponents."
Avery only briefly explained what he was doing to get the space monsters to turn on each other.
While he had created some chaos in their adversaries' ranks, there were still far too many space monsters coming after them to be dealt with.
The were currently a couple hundred that had gone rogue, while there were still tens of thousands with their sights on set only on Avery.
Being complacent would see them overrun in the blink of an eye. They had to keep moving, and Kasandra and Liesel needed to focus on gunning down as many as possible.
Several minutes went by as Avery kept the space monster horde focused on the Dauntless.
Not all of them had come after him. The commander types knew that that would be excessive and had only sent as many as they believed necessary to guarantee that Avery was destroyed. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
Yet that number kept increasing the longer he survived and the more chaos that he caused.
With his expert pilot skills and ability to see the flow of energy, he was able to keep away from the largest groups of monsters set up to destroy him.
These numbers were too great for him to avoid them all, of course. But whenever it was necessary to fight, Avery would target some of the creatures with his new power, and Kasandra and Liesel would blow the others away with the Dauntless' weapon systems.
The commander types were beginning to get a grasp of what Avery was doing though.
At first, they had merely thought that they were losing connections due to the beings under their command dying. A fairly common occurrence.
Eventually, however, they had started to realize what was really going on.
Some outside force was cutting their connection and causing their normally obedient subordinates to go berserk.
Although, knowing about and dealing with this issue were two entirely different matters.
Each one of the commanders controlled tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of entities depending on which species they were assigned to.
That was not something that was easy to accomplish.
Most of their orders were things that were simple.
Such as, don't harm each other. Or attack a designated target.
Adding contradictory commands to deal with the no longer connected space monsters could create chaos across the psychic network that linked them all.
That left them with very few options, and the ones the command type monsters had chosen as to surround the rogue creatures with members of their own species that they still saw as friendly.
This was a huge drain on their forces, and something that Avery was happy to continue to exploit.
Still, as effective as he was, Avery was up against waves of thousands of space monsters.
By the time he had been holding their attention for just a little over twenty-two minutes, the Dauntless was in real danger of being surrounded and crushed.
"I just sent word. Our relief will be here in thirty-seven seconds." Jasmine said, informing Avery of how much longer he needed to keep going.
This mission had certainly been a major drain on his mental energy.
He was already starting to sweat pretty heavily, and he could feel his hearts thumping in his chest.
Fortunately, he did not have to serve in the role as bait alone. There were others ready to take his place.
When thirty-seven seconds had passed, four ships dropped out of light speed around a hundred kilometers away from the Dauntless' current position.
It was time for the second phase of the plan to begin.
