The panel faded and didn’t return.

He looked at the notes document. Liverpool and United had three lines each. Bayern had nothing. Atalanta had nothing.

He pulled up his email and typed four lines to Marco — two clubs remaining, attached modifications, meetings still twenty-second and twenty-third, tell him which asks were realistic. He attached the notes document and sent it. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

10:47 PM.

His phone rang at 10:58.

"You actually read them," Marco said.

"Yeah," Demien said.

"All four."

"All four."

Marco was quiet for a moment. "The Liverpool image rights point is correct. Their definition is narrower than it reads on first pass. Most players don’t catch that."

"It’s in the qualifying income clause," Demien said. "Paragraph three, subsection B."

"Right." Another pause. "The buyout clause — dropping from eighty-five to sixty-five. Liverpool will push back on that."

"If I’m worth sixty-five million after two years Liverpool have already made a profit on whatever they paid for me," Demien said. "I’m not asking them to take a loss."

"Fair point," Marco said. "But they’ll still push back. Buyout clauses are about control, not just value." He was quiet for a second. "The United commercial obligations — asking them to cut from twelve days to eight and put a hard ceiling on tours. That’s going to be a fight. United’s commercial operation is built on player access."

"Then they can reflect that in the wage structure," Demien said. "If they won’t reduce the days I’m not reducing my asks elsewhere. The balance either works or it doesn’t."

"You’re saying if they won’t give you the eight days, the commercial access costs them in salary."

"Yes."

Marco made a sound that wasn’t approval exactly but was adjacent to it. "And the playing time clauses — both clubs will refuse to put starting guarantees in a contract for a nineteen-year-old. No top club does that."

"Then make it conditional," Demien said. "Not guaranteed starts. If I’m not getting regular minutes after six months, a loan option activates. Or a reasonable exit clause with a fee both sides can accept. That’s not a guarantee — it’s a protection."

"That’s more realistic," Marco said. "I can work with conditional language." He paused again. "Where did this come from? Three weeks ago you weren’t even reading the document."

Demien looked at the laptop screen. The Perk was still present at the edge of his awareness, the contract text sitting in front of him with the clauses that mattered made visible. "I read it properly," he said. "Started seeing what wasn’t there."

"You see gaps in sixty-page legal documents now," Marco said.

"I see what doesn’t protect me," Demien said.

Marco was quiet for five full seconds. "Alright," he said. "I’ll send modified terms to both clubs this week while you’re in camp. Exploratory — nothing formal until you’re back. The meetings are still twenty-second and twenty-third?"

"Yeah," Demien said.

"I’ll confirm by Wednesday." A pause. "Get some sleep. Assessments tomorrow."

"Thanks Marco."

"Good night." He hung up.

Demien closed the laptop. The room was quiet except for the low TV and Phillips’ breathing and the distant sound of the facility outside the window settling into its overnight state.

He lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling for a moment, and Phillips had fallen asleep on the other side of the room and the facility was quiet outside the window and the decision was nine days away and the camp had started.

He spoke quietly into the dark.

"System."

The blue interface materialised in his peripheral vision immediately, text appearing in clean lines against the dark ceiling.

「Hello, Demien. Welcome back.」

A brief pause and then the next line.

「What pack will you be opening?」

The balance appeared above the selection options, the numbers steady and clear.

「CURRENT BALANCE」 「TP: 1,490 | SP: 7 | MP: 813」

「AVAILABLE PACKS」

「Bronze Pack: 50 TP」 「Silver Pack: 200 TP」 「Gold Pack: 500 TP」 「Black Pack: 10 SP」 「Diamond Pack: 50 SP」

He looked at the balance. Fourteen hundred and ninety training points. Seven special points. Eight hundred and thirteen match points. Everything he’d accumulated since August — the season, the Coppa Italia, the hat-trick record, the qualification — sitting there waiting.

He’d been putting this off since the trophy presentation at the Stadio Olimpico.

Not anymore.
