Chapter 56: Chapter 56

I can’t leave him like this, can I?

And the sound behind them became louder.

Dan’s expression then turned dark.

It had been a while now since Dan had the conversation with Nate. He was now running far away from the being that was chasing them.

His heart was beating wildly, he was sweating profusely. The sweat rolled down his face, with some getting into his eyes.

The sweat burned his eyes and his vision was getting blurry.

But then he couldn’t stop he needed to keep going. He needed to survive, not only him but they both needed to survive.

With his speed reduced to a large amount due to the fact that he carried Nate on his back. Dan still kept on running away from the being that was in pursuit of them both.

He had actually put quite a distance between the being and himself. But it still wasn’t large enough as the being still kept on following them. No matter how hard he tried, Dan still couldn’t shake it off. It still just kept flowing their tracks.

And after a while running, Dan finally stopped. His lungs were burning, breathing became harder and his nostrils weren’t large enough to provide him the amount of air he needed. And so he opened his mouth. Breathing in as much air as possible.

This can’t go on for ever. Dan thought to himself.

Dan lay his head on the cold wet stone of the ancient monument.

I need to find a way to kill this being. But from my clash with it, I could tell it was far stronger than me.

Sweat rolled slowly down his face. His breathing becoming more controlled. Turning to his side he looked at Nate, who was now all curled up beside him. The young demigod seemed to be shaking, his eyes darting from one part of the darkness to another. Even though he could see nothing.

What am I to do now?

Dan thought as he closed his eyes.

And then he heard a distant sound, immediately his instincts kicked in and he held Soul Reaper tightly.

Soul Reaper’s blade slowly glistened in the dark. The eerie whispers from the blade started manifesting.

"POWERRR, COME LETS GIVE YOU POWERRRR" the voices whispered into Dan’s ears

"GIVE US THE YOUNG DEMIGOD’S SOUL AND WE WOULD GIVE YOU POWERRR"

"UNIMAGINABLE POWERRR"

The voices kept getting louder, it was as though a being was breathing down his neck and speaking those words to him.

Doing his best Dan tried to suppress the sound of the voices.

And then with his heightened sense of hearing picked up something.

It was another sound again.

His eyes shot wide opened, as he could now hear two sounds. One was that of a being slithering across the floor and moving toward them with so much speed. While the other was like that of a group of people talking together. Though, they were whispering. Dan’s hearing could still subtly pick up their voices.

So, some people actually survived?

At least now there was hope. At least for one of them. But Dan knew it wasn’t for him.

Tapping the young Nate, Dan raised him up.

"I know you can’t see but I would need you to do something for me." Dan said.

"I want you to survive for the both of us. Can you do that for me?"

Dan could see the young Nate nod his head.

"Okay" Dan smiled.

Taking up the young Nate. Dan pulled him to a part of the wall and placed his hand on the wall.

"I would need you to trace this wall and keep moving forward. No matter what happens or what you hear keep moving forward. Don’t stop"

"Ahead you meet some people they should be able to keep you safe."

Dan now nudged the Little demigod to move forward.

"Make sure you are quiet"

"But... But what about you?"

Dan smiled again.

"Don’t worry about me I’ll be fine"

Nate started walking forward slowly. His hands on the wall as they used the walls to navigate the darkness.

He then stopped moving.

"Dan, I promise to get help to save you"

Dan’s heart then fluttered, a larger smile formed on his face.

"Okay... but you better get going though"

Dan could see in the darkness that the young demigod had a firm expression on his face. Nate then turned and started going away.

"Now time for business"

Dan’s eyes were glowing immensely in the dark.

"Hiss" Dan heard a sound.

He looked straight ahead and the sound began to get louder.

Dan then saw a claw grab unto the wall from a corner. The being emerged from the turn.

Its snake eyes locked onto Dan’s human features.

"So this is it then"

Dan watched the being stop.

"I would need to hold out for as long as possible. For Nate to get to safety"

Dan drew in a deep breath. Taking a stance, his blade over his head. He closed his eyes.

"Lets do this"

Slowly, he began moving toward the beast.

From slow jogs, it then turned to an all out sprint.

The being seeing Dan approach it. The being then raised its claws up ready to smite down Dan.

But as close to the being, he performed a slide and passed the beings arms. Its claws missing Dan by a few inches.

Dan then swung his blade at the beings abdomen. Only for it to be deflected, and not even a single scratch found on the being.

Whatt!!!

Dan’s face immediately turned pale. But there was no time to be stunned, as Dan felt his instincts kick in.

Using the wall beside him. Dan ran up the wall and made a flip landing on the other side of the being.

A few seconds after, a large tail landed just where Dan had stood.

"I knew it wasn’t going to be easy but this much harder than I thought."

Dan then gripped Soul Reaper tightly as he rushed in again.
