Chapter 436: Chapter 436: All Bark and No Bite

Audrey Sutton turned Shane around to check him over with concern, asking, "Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"

Before Shane Warner could answer, Franklin Sutton, who was following Shane, gave Audrey a disdainful look and muttered, "Never see you worry about your brother."

Audrey glanced at Franklin and heard Shane chuckle, saying, "I’m fine, thanks to your call this afternoon that tipped me off."

"What do you mean? Did he actually come for you?"

"We’ll talk about it later; I’m starving, let’s eat first." Shane wrapped an arm around Audrey, smiled and bid farewell to Franklin before leaving the police station.

They found a restaurant, and it was during dinner that Audrey learned from Shane that Phillip Keating had already been caught.

This afternoon, Phillip Keating disguised himself as an electrician and snuck into the company intending to assassinate Shane. Fortunately, after Shane received Audrey’s call, he became cautious, and with Faye Xavier by his side, Phillip didn’t get close to Shane at all, but Faye ended up with a minor injury.

"Is Brother Xavier badly hurt?"

Shane replied, "Just a minor scratch."

Audrey put a piece of cut steak into her mouth and said, "We should visit Brother Xavier at the hospital later, after all, he got hurt saving you."

Shane: "No need to visit, he didn’t get admitted to the hospital. A small wound wrapped up is nothing, besides, he took a week’s vacation from me, he’s already gained."

Audrey frowned and said, "He’s still your brother, he’s always been loyal to you. You should show him some concern, be a little humane."

"Alright, I’ll make sure to care for him."

Audrey thought for a moment and asked, "What’s going to happen with this Phillip Keating?"

Shane: "That’s up to the court."

Audrey murmured, "He should be charged with attempted murder, likely sentenced to three to five years, but I’m afraid he won’t learn his lesson, and will cause trouble after being released."

Shane chuckled, picked up the towel next to him, and wiped his hands saying, "Do I look like someone easy to mess with?"

Audrey looked up at him and then nodded, laughing, saying, "You seem delicate, like someone who’s more talk than action, not suited for a fight."

Shane’s smile vanished instantly, "Say that again?"

Audrey pursed her lips and muttered quietly, "It is true though."

Shane squinted at her, "When we’re home tonight, we’ll see who’s delicate and not suited for a fight."

Audrey protested, "What kind of skill is it to compare with a girl like me? Why don’t you take on my big brother, didn’t he punch you a few times last time and you didn’t dare fight back?"

Shane: "You’re asking for it."

Audrey laughed at him, "You only dare swagger in front of me, bullying a little girl, what kind of skill is that?"

Shane glared at her, "Hurry up and eat, finish up so we can get home and get things done."

With his teeth-gritting tone, Audrey knew she had gone too far with her teasing, fearing she’d have a hard time at home later: "I’ll stay at school tonight."

Shane: "I’m just a delicate person who only knows how to talk, what are you afraid of? Am I going to eat you?"

Audrey quickly nodded, "You can!"

"Stop babbling, hurry and eat."

Audrey thought that Shane knew her schedule and knew she had no classes tomorrow morning, thinking she probably wouldn’t get a good night’s rest tonight.

But perhaps heaven had mercy on her, as she had abdominal pains on the way back, realizing her period had come.

Despite the discomfort, it saved her from a big ordeal, leaving Shane helpless; no matter how unhappy he was, he obediently made her brown sugar water to drink.

The plan to play video games with Barry Barrett naturally got postponed, as Audrey huddled in her bed with a hot water bottle, drifting into sleep.

Shane wrung out a towel, wiped her face, tucked her in properly, turned off the lights, and went downstairs to work on his computer.

Around nine o’clock, Lan Irving called him.

Lan rarely called him, even when Lan worked at Starfield, she’d always directly contact Faye Xavier first, who then relayed the information to him; Shane and Lan rarely communicated directly.

Shane pondered, perhaps Faye had arranged Lan’s departure, and Lan was calling to say goodbye or something, hesitated, then answered the call.

Once it connected, Lan Irving’s voice came through, asking, "Can you come out for a moment?"

Shane’s tone was indifferent, asking, "What’s up?"

Lan Irving: "Let’s meet."

Shane glanced upstairs, firstly he felt uneasy leaving Audrey alone at home; secondly, he knew Audrey would be upset knowing he met with Lan privately; thirdly, he felt no real need to meet with Lan, so he said, "Just say it directly."

On the other side, Lan paused before saying, "Faye booked me a flight for tomorrow morning to Germany. Once I go, I won’t return. Considering I’ve been around you for so many years, no matter what’s happened, it shouldn’t end too awkwardly. I want to clear things up before leaving, also apologize to you and Miss Sutton. You don’t need to worry too much, there are other friends too, you can choose to come alone, or bring Miss Sutton with you, just consider it as sending me off."

Shane thought that if Lan was willing to leave, and stop pursuing Audrey, then there was no need to push her to the edge.

Lan had indeed helped him a lot over the years; acknowledging Faye’s sentiment, sending her off didn’t hurt, so he said, "The address." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

Lan Irving: "Nightshade."

Nightshade was her territory, so there wasn’t much to worry about, and even if Lan was up to tricks, she wouldn’t dare act out at Nightshade.

He just feared it might be a strategy to lure him away; hence Shane called for bodyguards to guard the villa, only leaving once they arrived.

He cooperated with Lan’s arrangement; if she dared to play tricks, it would give him reason to punish her, and by then Faye would have no reason to show mercy either.

Arriving at Nightshade, Shane found Lan sitting alone in a corner booth, contrary to what she mentioned on the phone about other friends.

Whether it was another ploy, he had already arranged for someone to keep an eye on Audrey; if Lan dared pull a trick tonight, she wouldn’t be leaving Nightshade alive.

Shane sat across from her; she’d already drunk quite a lot, evident by the intoxicated look in her eyes.

Seeing Shane arrive, Lan smiled at him, then picked up the glass she had prepared for him, pouring him a drink while saying, "Sorry, I was afraid you wouldn’t come, so I lied. I didn’t invite anyone else, only you, though I didn’t expect you wouldn’t bring her along."
