Chapter 437: Chapter 437: I Hate Jerks the Most

Shane didn’t exchange many pleasantries with Lan Irving, his tone somewhat cold: "Just say what you need to, I don’t have much time."

Lan gave a bitter smile: "Seems like your gentleness truly belongs to her, I thought you had become more gentle."

Saying that, Lan pushed the wine glass towards him lazily: "President Warner, have a drink with me."

Shane glanced at the wine glass without picking it up.

First, he didn’t know if there was anything wrong with the wine, second, he had promised Audrey Sutton to quit smoking and drinking, so he wouldn’t drink if he didn’t have to.

"Afraid I drugged it?" Lan chuckled self-deprecatingly, "Seems I have no trust left from you at all."

Shane remained silent, Lan picked up Shane’s glass, took a sip, and muttered as though talking to herself: "Indeed, I betrayed Starfield and joined Celestine. But President Warner, have you ever thought... why I ended up like this?"

"I watched Starfield grow from its founding to what it is now, do you even know how much effort I put into it?"

Shane replied indifferently: "I haven’t mistreated you."

"True, you haven’t mistreated us, but ever since you got married, your thoughts have all been on that woman. You’re absent-minded at work, late for meetings, postponing schedules repeatedly—is this the President Warner I knew?"

Shane slightly lifted his gaze toward her, saying: "Do you have the right to criticize me?"

Lan smiled, looking down: "Thinking back, I really overstepped, took myself too seriously, always felt I was special, thinking a woman in a marriage alliance couldn’t compare to me, and believed President Warner, you wouldn’t be tangled in romantic affairs..."

Shane had no interest in acknowledging Lan’s sentiments, checked his watch, seemingly preparing an excuse to leave.

Lan also noticed his impatience, muttered to herself: "I’m the daughter of a murderer, because of this, I’ve been scorned since childhood, but what did I do wrong? The one who did wrong was him, why do I have to bear all this? Is it fair?"

"I know, you’re the Third Young Master of The Warner, we’re from two different worlds, from the day I met you, I’ve been reminding myself of this, Faye Xavier also kept reminding me, but I still fell for you."

Lan sneered and refilled the empty glass with clear liquor, continuing: "Even though I’ve always carefully hidden this, I believe President Warner, someone as smart as you, must have noticed long ago, right?"

Shane listened to her words stoically, his gaze remained unfazed.

Back when Clarissa Morgan pursued him, her words were bolder than Lan’s now, and he still remained unmoved, especially since now he already has a woman he likes; he’s even more indifferent to outside temptations.

Facing Shane’s indifference, Lan seemed accustomed to it, it seemed she called him out just to let him listen to the words she’s kept inside for a long time, not caring what his response was, she just said: "I keep thinking, if I had been braver before Audrey Sutton appeared, told you all this earlier, would you have looked at me?"

Saying this, Lan looked up at him, her intoxicated eyes turning misty, making her gaze wet and blurred.

He didn’t even respond, as if everything she said had nothing to do with him, dimming the last shred of expectation and hope in her eyes.

Rubbing away the tears spilling over her lids swiftly, she lowered her gaze, biting her lips, crying silently and painfully.

If it had been Audrey Sutton in this state, he might have felt pained and frowned by now, but with Lan instead, he felt no disturbance within himself.

Just noticed a white light flashing in the darkness, like the flash of a phone camera.

Shane narrowed his eyes in that direction, immediately spotting Phoebe King looking frustrated as she grabbed her phone and ran off.

Phoebe’s relationship with Audrey Sutton was no ordinary one; this photo taken is probably prepared to be sent to Audrey.

Shane felt a panic in his heart, disregarded the tearful Lan, and immediately got up to chase after Phoebe.

Lan saw Shane leave out of the corner of her eye, she gripped the wine glass, collapsed onto the table, crying uncontrollably...

Shane caught up with Phoebe near the stairs to the second floor, frowned, and asked her: "What did you take?"

Phoebe hadn’t expected the flash to betray her, but she wasn’t the least bit guilty; after all, now Shane had to plead for her help, as she smugly waved her phone: "Evidence of you secretly meeting behind Audrey’s back, of course."

Shane glared at her, speaking in a deep voice: "Delete it."

Phoebe snorted: "I hate jerks the most, saying how much you love Audrey, yet at night sneak out behind her back to reminisce with your secretary. Audrey even told me you had a fling with that secretary, I advised her to believe you’re not that kind of person. Now it seems I, Phoebe, misjudged—a jerk!"

"Don’t cause trouble for me, Audrey knows I came to meet her, I’m investigating an incident not long ago." Shane lied, but it was a well-intentioned lie; if this photo were truly seen by Audrey, he would have no way to explain himself.

Phoebe looked at him, suspicious: "Really?"

Shane: "You know who I am, right?"

Phoebe thought about it, looking at Shane, who didn’t seem to be lying, she lowered her head and unlocked her phone: "I already sent it to Audrey."

"You hell!"

Phoebe paused her finger’s operation, pointed at Shane, threatening: "Speak nicely to me; I’ll be kind enough to retract it for you."

"If you can retract it, hurry up!"

Phoebe chuckled smugly: "Compliment me."

Shane’s face darkened: "Believe it or not, I’ll go to school tomorrow and tell Stephen Sutton about your past troubles?"

Phoebe glared at him, retracting the message while gritting her teeth: "You’re tough."

Seeing Phoebe hand over the phone to show the message was retracted, Shane finally breathed a sigh of relief, spoke coldly: "Delete the photo immediately."

Phoebe put the phone back into her bag, walking upstairs, saying: "No, what if I need it later? Could use it against you."

Shane glared at her too, knowing Phoebe wouldn’t act recklessly, so he didn’t bother with her. Remembering Audrey was alone at home, although the photo was retracted, he couldn’t guarantee Audrey hadn’t seen the message in those two minutes.

So Shane immediately left the bar and drove home.
