Mommy Wolf: Raise A Cub, Claimed By His Beast Daddy-Chapter 127: A Stand-In Mate
When she heard his painful scream, she felt a shiver crawl under her skin, as if his shriek were calling out to her.
As he thrashed around, trying to endure the excruciating pain wracking his body, an urge rose within her to hug him tightly—so he would feel better. Or, if he couldn’t feel better, then at least they could share the pain together, so Kael wouldn’t suffer alone.
Honestly, Sisi was surprised by this feeling. Usually, she was more of a keen observer. She never involved herself on a deeper emotional level with anyone except Jojo. Even with the Matriarch, whom she saw as a mother figure, she still knew her limits.
But with Kael...
Was it because he was Jojo’s father that she felt sympathy for him?
She didn’t know.
But she wanted him to wake up from his nightmare. That much was certain.
"Stay right here while I treat your father. I don’t want you to get hurt."
"Um..."
Sisi slowly approached the writhing Kael. The beast thrashed in his sleep, claws out and ready to strike. If she wasn’t careful, Sisi could be accidentally injured... or worse.
She knew she had to restrain him somehow. Thus, summoning vines from outside the cave, she bound Kael’s limbs.
It worked for a few seconds, but the beast was too strong. He easily broke through the vines.
"Urrggh! No—love, don’t... go! Grrrghhh!" Kael muttered on in his nightmare, calling out to his "love" and begging her not to leave.
Sisi couldn’t help but wonder who this "love" was. She assumed it was Kael’s fated mate who had died during labor. Yet, at the same time, hearing him repeatedly murmur my love made her uncomfortable.
Now, with the Beast King grunting those words in front of her, it almost felt as if that "love" was directed at her.
Yes—to Sisi.
Kael suddenly shifted into his beastman form, standing tall before her. His eyes remained tightly shut, blood still dripping from the corners.
It was a terrifying sight for anyone. But to Sisi, Kael looked... pitiful.
He finally stopped thrashing and grunting in his sleep, but his blood tears flowed even more freely as he began to sob.
"I—I can’t remember you, my love. Why? Why can’t I remember?! Why is the consequence so painful?!"
Suddenly, Kael lunged forward.
Sisi gasped and tried to summon more vines to protect herself, but he was too fast. Instead, he enveloped her in a crushing embrace.
"Sisi!" Jojo was about to grab his toy rock and strike his father, but Sisi stopped him immediately.
"N-no, it’s okay. He’s not hurting me," she assured him. "He’s just... hugging me. Very tightly."
She tried to break free, but it was impossible, especially after Kael straightened his body, lifting her off the ground until her feet no longer touched the ground.
She attempted to restrain him with her plants again, but it was useless. The beast was far too strong.
"Kael... let go..." Sisi whispered weakly as she began to feel breathless.
"My love, why... I want to remember you. But why do you always disappear when I wake up?" Kael voiced his grievance. "Do you hate me so much that you don’t want to see me?"
Sisi stopped struggling.
The more he spoke, the more she sensed his overwhelming sadness, like there was nothing left in this world except the hope of meeting his beloved again.
Sisi had never loved anyone romantically.
She had been too young to think about romance in the orphanage, and later, she was nothing more than a slave on the farm.
A few male farmworkers had tried to talk to her, but Mr. Piker either fired them or gave them severe warnings. As a result, Sisi remained completely alone under his domination.
Her love for Jojo, on the other hand, was purely maternal.
So she couldn’t understand the pain that came from romantic love, the kind of pain Kael was drowning in now.
"Say something, my love. I want to hear your voice... just like in the dream..." Kael murmured, ending weakly with, "...please. I’m begging you."
...
Slowly, Sisi wrapped her arms around his waist to comfort him. She didn’t know what to say, but if Kael needed comfort, then so be it.
She could be his stand-in "love" until he woke up.
She tried to think of comforting words. Something gentle. Something reassuring.
In the end, she simply spoke whatever came to mind.
"Why are you crying over this... husband..." Her body cringed at the last word.
Of course, she could have just called him "Kael." But right now, she was playing the role of the love of his life, which she assumed to be Jojo’s late mother. Jojo’s mother would have called him husband instead of by his name.
"How can I not cry? You... you keep coming into my dreams, telling me to remember. But I can’t remember! No matter how hard I try, I can’t remember your face, your smile, your voice. My love, I’m nothing but a blind bastard now!" Kael’s body trembled as all the agony of countless nights spilled out.
Sisi rested her head against his chest, letting the blood from his eyes drip down and stain her hair.
"You might not remember me when you wake up. But I know your heart will find me... eventually," she murmured, continuing to improvise. "So calm down, alright? Our son is scared because you won’t wake up. He even went down the summit by himself and got injured. Don’t you love him?"
"I... I love him. I love him as much as I love you," Kael confessed.
Sisi almost chuckled. If Kael ever remembered saying that, he would probably punch himself in the face.
Still, she continued playing along.
"Then wake up. Jojo and I are hungry, and you haven’t hunted us a single meal today."
"Mm... I will... I will hunt... a bull..."
Finally, Kael released the "beloved" in his arms and collapsed backward, slamming into the ground like a fallen rock.
