Chapter 47: The Morning

It was early in the morning and Marcus could hear the cuckoo of the birds from the outside.

His eyes fluttered open and as his vision turned from blur to clear, the ceiling above him came into focus.

For a second, he didn’t move.

Just laid there, letting the quiet settle in.

Marcus blinked once, then turned his head slightly to the side.

Empty.

Elaina wasn’t there.

The spot beside him was already cool, the blanket slightly folded like someone had gotten up a while ago.

"She woke up early," he muttered.

Marcus exhaled and pushed himself up, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. He sat there for a moment, elbows resting on his thighs as he rubbed his eyes with one hand.

His body still felt it. The night. The memory came back clearly. He couldn’t believe he had done it to her twice, and it felt so euphoric to the point thinking about it just made him feel hard again.

Marcus glanced down briefly, then let out a small huff.

"Seriously."

He ran a hand through his hair, trying to push the thought aside, but it lingered.

Before he could dwell on it further.

The door opened.

Marcus looked up.

Elaina stepped inside, carrying a wooden tray carefully in both hands.

She had already changed.

She was wearing a light camisole dress that reached just above her knees. The fabric was simple, soft, and loose, but it followed her shape naturally. Her legs were fully visible, smooth and well-formed, and her hair was slightly damp, tied loosely behind her.

For a moment.

Marcus just looked at her.

Elaina noticed.

"Good morning," she said, her voice softer than usual.

Marcus blinked once, then gave a small nod.

"...Morning."

She walked toward him and set the tray down on the desk near the bed.

"I made breakfast," she said. "It’s just an omelet... and some bread."

Marcus stood up slowly, stepping closer.

"You made this?"

Elaina nodded.

"...Yeah."

There was a slight pause before she added.

"It’s my first time cooking for someone else."

Marcus glanced at the tray. It was a simple dish but he knew it was made meticulously and with care.

"This looks good."

Elaina shifted slightly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

"I’m not sure if it tastes good," she admitted. "I usually just cook for myself, so I don’t really pay attention to—"

Marcus reached out and lightly tapped her head.

"It’s fine," he said. "I’ll eat it."

Elaina blinked.

"You didn’t even try it yet."

Marcus shrugged.

"I don’t need to."

That made her pause.

"Why?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Because you made it."

Elaina stared at him for a second.

Then her cheeks turned slightly red again.

"You say things like that too easily."

Marcus smirked faintly.

"You’re just not used to it. But you’ll be soon, and when you do, I’ll still do it."

Elaina looked away, but there was a small smile forming.

"...Okay."

Marcus glanced back at the tray.

"Let’s eat."

Marcus reached for the plate without hesitation.

He picked up the fork and cut a piece of the omelet, steam still rising faintly from it. The texture looked soft, the edges slightly crisp, cooked just right.

Elaina watched him.

Closely.

Her hands were lightly clasped in front of her, like she didn’t realize she was doing it.

Marcus brought the fork to his mouth and took a bite.

He chewed once.

Twice.

Then paused.

Elaina’s shoulders stiffened a little.

"...Well?" she asked.

Marcus swallowed.

Then looked at her.

"This is good."

Elaina blinked.

"Really?"

Marcus nodded.

"Yeah."

He took another bite, this time without hesitation.

"It’s not just good," he added. "It’s actually really good."

Elaina stared at him for a second, like she was trying to confirm if he was just saying it.

"You’re not just saying that?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

He lifted the fork slightly.

"The texture’s right. Not too dry. Not too soft either."

He took another bite.

"And the seasoning’s balanced."

Elaina’s eyes widened slightly.

"...You noticed that?"

Marcus gave a small shrug.

"I eat a lot. You start to notice things."

Elaina let out a quiet breath.

"Thank god..."

"But you know what else is delicious?" Marcus said, setting down the tray.

"What?" she asked curiously.

"You," Marcus answered.

Elaina froze for a split second when he said it.

"...What—"

She didn’t get to finish.

Marcus closed the distance and kissed her.

His arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer, while his other hand cupped her cheek, thumb brushing lightly against her skin.

Elaina’s eyes widened at first.

Then slowly.

They closed.

Her body leaned into him almost naturally, her hand lifting and gripping lightly onto his shirt, like she needed something to hold onto. The warmth from earlier returned, creeping back in without warning.

For a few seconds, neither of them pulled away.

Then his hands worked their way around her figure, pulling her closer as he guided her back.

Elaina didn’t resist at first.

Her steps followed his without thinking until the back of her legs hit the edge of the bed.

Marcus didn’t stop.

He leaned forward and gently pushed her down onto the mattress, his weight following after. The bed dipped under them as he hovered over her, one hand braced beside her head, the other still resting at her waist.

"Elaina..."

His voice was lower now.

Closer.

He leaned in again, his lips trailing from her cheek down to her neck, slow and unhurried. The warmth of his breath brushed against her skin before his lips followed, pressing light kisses along the side of her neck, then lower toward her collarbone.

Elaina’s fingers tightened around his shirt.

Her breath hitched.

"...Marcus..."

He didn’t stop.

His lips moved along her clavicle, lingering for a second before moving again, like he was taking his time.

Then, Elaina pushed him.

Marcus paused immediately and lifted his head, looking down at her.

"...What?"

Elaina looked at him, her face already red again, breathing slightly uneven.

"...We have to stop."

Marcus frowned slightly.

"Why?"

Elaina exhaled, trying to steady herself.

"The guild," she said. "You cleared the goblin nest yesterday. We have to report it."

Marcus blinked once.

"...Now?"

"Yes, now," Elaina replied. "They should have the report by now since I told you it can be verified within the day as we have sent guild officials to confirm it."

"I see, okay."

Marcus pushed himself up and sat back slightly, giving her space.

Elaina quickly sat up as well, adjusting her dress, still trying to regain her composure.

"...We can... continue later," she added, a bit quieter this time.

Marcus looked at her.

"Continue what?"

Elaina froze.

Then her face turned even redder.

"You know what I mean!"

Marcus raised an eyebrow slightly.

"I didn’t say anything about that."

Elaina stared at him.

"You didn’t?"

Marcus shook his head.

"I was just kissing you."

Elaina opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

"...Idiot!" she said, turning away from him, clearly embarrassed now.

Marcus let out a small laugh.

"You’re the one who said it."

Elaina crossed her arms, still not looking at him.

"Just get dressed properly. We’re going to the guild."
