Chapter 48: Heading to the Guild

Elaina and Marcus walked side by side together.

Marcus simply wore his casual clothes that he had bought from an apparel shop while Elaina was dressed in her standard receptionist uniform.

Marcus glanced down at her hand.

It was right there.

Close enough.

Their shoulders were already brushing slightly as they walked, their pace naturally in sync. The streets of Berm were starting to fill with people, merchants opening their stalls, adventurers moving in groups, and the usual morning noise settling in.

For a moment, he didn’t do anything.

Then, he reached out casually. Like it wasn’t a big deal.

His fingers brushed against hers first, testing.

Then slowly, he slipped his hand into hers.

Elaina froze.

Just for a second.

Her steps faltered slightly, her head turning toward him in surprise.

"Marcus?"

He didn’t look at her.

"What?"

"You just—"

"I know."

Elaina looked at their hands.

Then back at him.

"...You didn’t even ask."

Marcus shrugged lightly as they kept walking.

"Do I need to? You are my girlfriend. Do boyfriends need permission to hold the hand of their girlfriend?"

Elaina opened her mouth, then paused.

Her fingers twitched slightly in his hold.

And instead of pulling away.

She tightened her grip.

Interlocking their fingers.

"No," she said quietly.

Marcus glanced at her this time.

A small, faint smile forming.

"Thought so."

Elaina looked forward again, but her cheeks were slightly red.

"So, after I got my rewards for the extermination of the goblins in the Northwood. I’ll start my mercenary shop now. I have enough capital from the wyverns to start small. How about you? Are you going to hand over your resignation?"

"There is a thirty-day notice period," Elaina continued, her voice more composed now, though her fingers were still interlocked with his. "I can’t just leave immediately. The guild requires proper turnover, especially for administrative positions."

Marcus nodded once.

"Figures."

Elaina glanced at him.

"You’re planning to start right away?"

"Yeah," Marcus said. "No point waiting. I already have the capital. I just need a base, a name, and a few people to start with."

Elaina thought about that for a moment.

"You’re really serious about this."

Marcus looked ahead.

"I told you I was."

Then moments later, they arrived in front of the adventurer’s guild. Still holding hands.

"Uhm...I think we should not hold hands for a while."

"No," Marcus said, pulling her as he stepped inside the adventurer’s guild. Then inside, all eyes were on them. "Good morning guys! This is my new girlfriend. So to those who were picking up on her before I came, well sucks to you I am his man now."

For a moment, no one spoke.

The entire hall went quiet.

The usual noise inside the guild—people talking, chairs scraping, boots moving across the floor—just stopped.

Every eye was on them.

On their hands.

On Elaina.

Then on Marcus.

At the reception desk, two of Elaina’s fellow staff froze mid-task. One of them still held a stack of papers, slightly tilted, while the other had a pen hovering over a document.

"...Eh?"

"...Wait—what?"

Their eyes widened.

Then slowly.

Their faces turned red.

"Elaina...?" one of them whispered under her breath, clearly caught off guard.

Elaina herself froze for a second, her face turning red almost instantly from Marcus’s sudden announcement.

"...Marcus..." she muttered under her breath.

But he didn’t let go of her hand.

If anything, his grip stayed firm.

Behind them, a group of adventurers stared openly.

One of them blinked.

"Did he just say—girlfriend?"

Another one scoffed quietly, clearly annoyed.

"You’re kidding me."

"That’s the receptionist, right? The blonde one?"

"Yeah, Elaina."

"...You’re telling me him?"

A few of them looked Marcus up and down.

Then exchanged looks.

"...Of course it’s him," one muttered. "The guy who took down wyverns alone."

"That doesn’t mean—"

"It kind of does," another cut in.

One of the younger adventurers leaned back in his chair, clearly irritated.

"...I was planning to ask her out."

"Too late now," his companion said.

"Yeah, you had your chance."

The frustration was obvious.

Some clicked their tongues.

Others just shook their heads.

At the same time, Near the counter, Elaina’s coworkers were still staring.

"...Since when?" one of them whispered.

"...She didn’t say anything..."

"...Wait, wasn’t she working yesterday like normal?"

Elaina felt the attention.

All of it.

Her face burned, but she didn’t pull her hand away.

Instead—

She tightened her grip slightly.

"...You really had to say it like that?" she whispered to Marcus.

Marcus glanced at her.

"Yeah."

"That wasn’t subtle at all."

"I wasn’t trying to be."

Elaina closed her eyes for a second, then let out a small breath.

"...Unbelievable."

There was no real anger in it.

Just embarrassment.

Marcus looked ahead again.

"We better proceed upstairs and meet with the guildmaster for the completion of my quest," Marcus said, already moving forward.

Elaina nodded quickly, still trying to keep her composure as she followed him. This time, she didn’t resist when he reached for her hand again. If anything, she held it a bit tighter as they made their way past the main hall.

The murmurs followed them.

They didn’t stop.

If anything, they grew louder as they walked toward the stairs.

"Damn..."

"He’s really serious about it..."

"That lucky bastard..."

Elaina kept her eyes forward.

"...Ignore them," Marcus said.

"I am," she replied, though her ears were still slightly red.

They went up the stairs and reached the second floor, where things were quieter. Fewer people. More offices. The noise from below faded as they approached a large wooden door.

Elaina knocked.

"Come in," a voice answered from inside. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Marcus opened the door and stepped in, with Elaina following right behind him.

Inside, the guildmaster sat behind a wide desk, papers spread neatly in front of him. He looked up as they entered—

And immediately paused.

His eyes went to their hands.

Then back to their faces.

"...I see," he said.

Elaina stiffened slightly.

Marcus didn’t react.

The guildmaster leaned back slightly in his chair.

"You two are together now?"

Marcus nodded once.

"Recent."

The guildmaster hummed softly.

"...That explains the reaction downstairs."

Elaina looked away slightly.

"...Sorry about that," she muttered.

The guildmaster waved it off.

"It’s not a problem," he said. "Just... unexpected."

Then his attention shifted back to Marcus.

"You came for the Northwood request."

Marcus nodded.

"Goblin nest. Cleared."

The guildmaster glanced down at a document on his desk, flipping a page.

"We received reports late yesterday evening," he said. "Farm owner confirmed as well as by the scouting party."

He looked back up.

"...It’s verified."

Marcus gave a small nod.

"Good."

"The reward can be processed immediately," the guildmaster continued. "With a bonus due to scale."

He then looked toward Elaina.

"Elaina, process his rewards."

Elaina straightened slightly out of habit.

"Yes, sir—"

Then she paused.

Just for a second.

The guildmaster noticed.

"...Is there something else?"

Elaina hesitated.

Then spoke.

"...I’m planning to resign."

The room went quiet again.

The guildmaster’s expression shifted slightly, not shocked, but clearly caught off guard.

"...Resign?"

Elaina nodded.

"Yes."

The guildmaster leaned back again, studying her.

"This is sudden."

Elaina glanced briefly at Marcus, then back at the guildmaster.

"I’ll follow the proper notice period," she said. "Thirty days. I’ll complete all my duties and turnover everything properly."

The guildmaster’s eyes flicked once more between the two of them.

"...I assume this has something to do with him."

Marcus didn’t deny it.

"Yeah."

The guildmaster let out a small breath.

"...I see."

He tapped the desk lightly with his fingers, thinking.

"You’re one of our most reliable staff," he said to Elaina. "Losing you won’t be easy."

Elaina lowered her gaze slightly.

"I understand."

Another pause.

Then the guildmaster nodded once.

"...Submit your formal notice later today."

Elaina nodded.

"Yes, sir."

The guildmaster looked back at Marcus.

"And you," he said, "try not to cause too much disruption while you’re at it."

"No promises."
